Me and Rich head north to go ferreting for the first time this season 2018/2019. It's been a long summer and I certainly couldnt wait to get out and catch some rabbits.
We were only using purse nets and decided to leave the dogs at home. Dogs can be a massive help. They can often tell if theres s rabbit at home, they will mark the warren and save your time setting nets on un occupied warrens. Our own dogs ( LURCHERS) are fast enough to catch any that miss the nets saving you putting down so many Purse nets which lalso saves time.
So to compensate for not having a dog we have to use every net and be careful not to miss any bolt holes. We were using 4 ferrets, three of my trusty hob ferrets and Rich had a Jill.
We started ferreting a banking, we caught a glimpse of rabbits going down as we approached. We used around 40 nets twice on two different warrens and the rabbits bolted well but slow. The banking made a difficult job and after a couple hours we had 7 healthy rabbits to take home.
However we wanted to make use of the next couple hours before it started to get dark. We decided to split up and ferret separate warrens to help build the bag. In the end we managed to catch 38 rabbits. I forgot how much harder it was using nets and I can see why I have relied on the dogs catching and marking in recent years.
