  • So it's just rained, and the sun has come out. Watch my interpretation of this street scene in Bristol, UK. In this watercolor demo I use several watercolor techniques - pre wet the paper, mixture of edges and range of values.
At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.
Would you like to paint scenes like this? If you join up at my Patreon site, in return for a small donation or pledge, I will give you a personal critique based on the regular projects I set with extra tips just for you! For more information, please go to

In this demo I will be covering...
    1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
    2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
    3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw cars and the figure.
    4) Wetting the paper and doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
    5) Shadows and details of the buildings, cars and figure.
    6) Watch out for the highlighting tips.

The paper I use and recommend is Saunders Waterford.

Very nice!! I really enjoy seeing your underdrawings, and the way you simplify the composition when you paint (no trees, no extra details, bike stand, sandwich sign, details in cars/bldgs). I did think you would give more definition to the diffused orb of sunlight in the sky; you brought it out in your stage 2 block in, but at the end the sky was flatter as a whole, and that bright spot accounts for the very dramatic reflected light beneath the left hand cars. Always enjoy watching you paint and it's so instructive to hear you narrate and talk about the choices you make. (Btw, a great distraction from the coronavirus lockdown that it seems just about everybody in the world is experiencing now!!)

Yes, sky could have been darker around the bright area. Thanks for your comments!

Sir, amongst all you are the one who explain every details how to draw...
Either others don't want to let know all the trick or maybe forgot to explain...
So to me you are the best teacher....

What a beautiful painting - I'm going to watch this entire video at nap time : ) I've been painting 20 years - but I'm mostly an animal portraitist. When I'm brave I'll do a landscape. I just finished one of Ireland - I feature it in my latest UA-cam video but I'm not entirely satisfied with it. Now that I see your beautiful composition, I think I'm missing the bold shapes and contrast you achieve with this painting. Thank you for the inspiration and providing something to aspire to!

Great work on contrasts! The right feeling is there, we see that the road is like wet and that this low sun is coming out full of luminosity. I noticed that you did not paint the trees (I maybe missed that in your comments), to focus on the sunshine and the strainght lines of the building and just about simplification, I imagine. Thanks for sharing!

I missed out the trees. I think they would have been a bit odd above the roof line
