This is one of the most touching videos I've ever seen, full of joy, promise, and the delights of a new world....how attentive is this beautiful mother... I feel blessed to be witness to this. You truly are the queen of peacock video capture.... such a privilege to have found you on you tube.... I can fully appreciate the time and patience it took to get this spectacular footage.... thank you for sharing this treasure. This has it's own playlist simply called 'Special Treat' Bella♥
It's definitely motherly love! I am very familiar with this particular peahen and she is a very good mother! Thanks for your visit and your comment. Glad you enjoyed!
I know its a late comment, but I'm really glad this was posted. I've raised many peachicks that have been abandoned by the mothers in my neighborhood, but I have never seen them hatching! Thank you.
@DeadlyTeaParty I WISH this was in my garden! No, it's at the L.A. County Arboretum, open to the public. Thanks so much for your warm comments. So glad you enjoyed it!
@XxXMidnightblackXxX Thanks so much for your nice comments. Yes, the raw sunflower seeds were mainly for the mother....the water was for everyone...and I put in some very small pieces of green-leaf lettuce for the chicks, as they were pecking away at the plants in the planter box. After they leave the nest, the mother would help them find bugs and worms.
Very cute... Peachicks in wild are amazingly agile even when they are hatched just few hours ago... They are masters with some very amazing inborn instincts to recognize their predators and the ability to vanish into vegetation. Also, baby peacocks can start flying within some days of hatching! That is amazing.
Thank you for your visit and your comments. Happy for you that you have your own peacock. Actually, peachicks can fly at birth, but they need a few days to be able to fly long distances. Good luck with yours.
Rio - the Peacock The best food is raw, unsalted sunflower seeds (unshelled). I don't know where you live, but you can get them cheap at Trader Joe's. They also like unsalted peanuts, but the sunflower seeds are the best. If you let him wander around in your yard, he can find some greens to eat, otherwise spinach leaves are great or green leaf lettuce (broken into small pieces, of course).
Aha... I would try sunflower seeds and spinach as you suggested. Thank you! Actually mine is a rescued wild peachick... But he is fully in syncrony with us. So he is very moody about the food. I am from India. Best he likes insects (grasshoppers to be specific). But then I have limits and his appetite is never-ending. He is master of hunting himself. But then I need to keep an eye on him to avoid any areal attack by eagles, hawks etc. He eats pearl millet, small leaves of nearly all plants.
@tzEkwan92 Thanks for your comment! The peahen sat on her eggs for a month before they hatched. Yes, that was the nest picked out by the peahen...she chose it.
Many thanks to you.You have sacrifice your time to make the video. It gives us immense pleasure. Most people like nature & appreciate the creation of Allah swt. When we see nature we are thankful to him.Pls keep uploading ,help us to be thankful .God bless you.
You can clearly see the difference in 17 weeks, when the males have developed blue in their faces and in the feathers on their necks and below that. But there are some signs early on: if the peachick displays its feathers, changes are its a male.
About a year for the females. The males are able to breed a year later, but most peahens prefer mating with a 3-year old male who has all of his beautiful train feathers.
@bellamoonnature Bella, thank you so much for watching! Sharing videos like this with people like you is an incredible delight! YOU are the treasure here...I value your comments so much...just having known you a little while has definitely enriched my life...I am flattered and grateful for your warm, responsive remarks...thanks for all your kindness and goodness!
@evemingo1 You're kidding, right? The particular male who mated with this female is in a territory pretty far away from where she is nesting. You probably heard from a peacock much closer by. After the male mates with the female, they are through with any interaction from each other. The female raises the peachicks all by herself, while the peacock is free to mate with other females.
Couple of questions if you don't mind. we have a pea hen that has laid six eggs in total 5 are in incubator and I she is sitting on the last one herself. She also laid an egg yesterday which I put in the incubator would she take it if I could get it under her or better to leave it in incubator. Secondly she is sitting on an egg at the moment in the back yard undercover but not protected from the open should I try and protect her someway. Do they ever get off the nest? should I try and feed her? Thanks in anticipation.
Sorry, I didn't see your comment until today. UA-cam didn't notify me. I hope by now all the eggs hatched. The mother leaves the nest at least once a day to look for food. Yes, it's OK to feed her. I think it's OK if she is in the open, as long as she is undercover. It would be alright to add the other egg to her nest if you put it there after she leaves the nest to look for food.
not only peahen ,what ever the kind of bird it is when they in incubating mood all they know is incubating because that mother instinct dominates every other instinct, but better you add the eggs in night time when she can not actually see what you are adding
That is true the Peahen looks after her chicks with love and care without the Peacock's help, and the Peacock normally goes somewhere for an adventure by himself, like mating with the other Peahens and fighting the other Peacocks.
+Dustin Griffith The peacocks are always available to mate with the peahens, and usually they only fight over territories or if one peacock is eating in another's territory. Thank you for your comment! Hope your week is going well.
like it a lot :) btw, how long did the peahen sat on the egg until the pea chicks are ready to hatch? and did the peahen automatically finds a nest and lay it eggs?
Peacocklover27 = how early in a peachicks life can you see the different boy'ish/girl'ish behaviours ? I know that turkey chicks display either male or female traits very early ... but is it the same for peachicks ?
indian national bird is peacock.i am so happy to watch a video like this thnks for the upload.next time you want to help the chick give them wheat or rice they just love wheat and rice
Hi I just found a peacock egg and the mother left it in the cold it was just layed and idk how long it was in the cold for but I have it wrapped up in a blanket and a heater hitting it what am I suppose to do in Order to have this peacock hatch
I have a peahen and peacock (peacock died) so We got a new one, A few days ago 4 peachicks were born and we didnt know it until today, There already Yellow and Not covered In Yolk There so cute!
Nisha Bhardawaj The males have blue on top of their heads and necks and striated (striped) feathers on their backs. The females have green on top of their heads and smooth brown feathers on their backs. Hope that helps. Good luck!
I know what you mean. On the video that you watched, the peahen hatched 7 chicks from 10 eggs, and only 3 peachicks survived. Right now at the Arboretum we have a bunch of coyotes who keep killing off all the peachicks. It's so sad.
Omg so cute I wish I had some they're so beautiful and extremely cute the only thing I have of them is the feathers but if I had them as pets it would be pretty cool

@TheWhiteRaveness Thanks so much for your very sweet comment! Glad you enjoyed it!
The Baby Peachicks are so cute. But the thing is, why is the peahen fat?
The peahen isn't fat...she's just puffed up to give the chicks hatching under her some room.
The way this mother is looking at her chicks, is it fatigue or motherly love??
I am loving this beauty of nature... thanks so much :) God bless you
@ecmcookiez2 Thanks for your comment. It was certainly a lot of fun getting these shots!
@DeadlyTeaParty I WISH this was in my garden! No, it's at the L.A. County Arboretum, open to the public. Thanks so much for your warm comments. So glad you enjoyed it!
@blackswantamer Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Actually, no they ventured pretty far away from the nest area, and didn't return there.
@Andrea Somers Me, too! Glad you enjoyed!

@amarisclare That's exactly why I was the bodyguard for this peahen during the hatching.
Again with a real example of a mothers love here.
Thanks so much for your sweet comments! They are much appreciated!

How long does it take a peacock to start breeding after it is born Male and Female
The peacock is the father, but this peahen on this video is the mother. She and her peachicks are very cute.
+Dustin Griffith The peahen raises her chicks on her own without any help from the peacock. Thanks for your comment! Have a nice weekend!

Thanks for watching! Happy Weekend!
Peacocklover27 = how early in a peachicks life can you see the different boy'ish/girl'ish behaviours ? I know that turkey chicks display either male or female traits very early ... but is it the same for peachicks ?
Does anyone make video of these peahen and chicks now
No, this video was taken in 2011. Only 3 of the 7 chicks survived.
The peahen and chicks disappeared after a storm 4 years ago.
This peahen loves when her chicks peck her beak. That's why she closes her eye in case they peck it.
indian national bird is peacock.i am so happy to watch a video like this thnks for the upload.next time you want to help the chick give them wheat or rice they just love wheat and rice

Why was the baby polling on her eye
The peachicks like to peck on the mother's beak. It is a sign of affection. Sometimes they miss and the peck goes toward her eye.
how many days its takes to make a baby peacock...
+akshitha priya After the peahen lays her eggs, it takes about 28 days for them to hatch.

Ive grown up around peacocks my whole life. And it's sad because sometimes most of the chicks that hatched, won't grow to be older
I know what you mean. On the video that you watched, the peahen hatched 7 chicks from 10 eggs, and only 3 peachicks survived. Right now at the Arboretum we have a bunch of coyotes who keep killing off all the peachicks. It's so sad.
