    In this video I talk about the Philly Joe Jones intro drum solo from the tune Locomotion on John Coltrane's Blue Train. This is an eight bar solo that I break down into easier to manage phrases and then help build back up to the full solo. Also at the end of the lesson, there is some guided practice where you can practice with Tim.

    You’re a kind and patient teacher and just as importantly, you’re one swingin’ drummer.

    I immediately noticed the tone of your USA Customs and my 80s era USAs are so very close. Unbelievable how consistent "That Great Gretsch Sound" has been through the decades.

    For those of you that watched this last Friday, sorry about that. I had it scheduled and thought I called it off, but I guess I didn't click "Save Changes." Just to be clear, the book will not be available on my website, but there are links below to where you can find it. I am not paid in any way for doing this video, I just wanted to get the word out about this book because I think it is important. Thanks for watching!

    Wonderful stuff Tim! This book was a total gem of a discovery for me a couple years back. I have been doing essentially what you did in this video on and off and creating exercises for myself. Such valuable vocabulary!! A couple digestible chunks I go back to are his intro on 'stablemates' and the trading on 'four.' Not too lengthy and great to learn some language. Thanks and take care!

    Hi Tim,
    I enjoy all your videos but I was wondering if you have a method for memorizing solos from the Philly Jo book which I also just got. I have to always look at the book!
    I have problems memorizing and was wondering what you do to memorize solos. Thanks again.

    Holy farg - the real tempo for this is ridiculously hard. I can sort of do it but can’t make it feel right. Also - is it me - or does the band slow down when they come in? PJJ’s intro seems to be at a different tempo right? Anyway - this video made it possible for me to play it. I don't think I could have done it just reading the chart in the book. Thank you.

      @TimMetz  2 роки тому +1

      Man! This is exactly why I do this! Thank you for your comment! Yes it is insanely fast. PJJ was such a master. It probably does slow down a bit. I haven’t listened that closely in a while to be sure though. Thanks again!

    Memphis only has it in hardcover, and the other places are out of stock. I hope the regular spiral bound hasn't been discontinued, hardcover is only good as an occasional reference or a coffee table book, not something to put on a music stand.

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  2 роки тому

      I think it just appears to be hard cover. I would call them to find out. As far as I know, it isn’t a hardcover book. I do know the spiral bound version is out of print, but the new versions are soft cover and work on stands well. There are also more solos in them. Hope this helps!

    • @kirkabe5155
      @kirkabe5155 2 роки тому +1

      I just got the hardbound version and it works and lays flat on a music stand without the binding getting messed up as one might think a hardbound book would.

    I can’t read music… how does a book help?

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  2 роки тому

      I guess it wouldn't then. Listening is key anyway. Reading music is written language, playing music is the art.
