My Dad was a 30 year Officer in The USAF with 21 of those service years as a Pilot. He was a huge Historian of other Nation's and especially of their Military. He often said that Marshall was the equivalent of General Patton on the battlefield. Dad always believed IF Rommel had been able to serve under anyone else but Hitler, the outcome of WW2 "might" have been different, at least from the African Continent War perspective. Rommel many times showed his humanistic qualities as a Solider and Leader to his men and colleagues. Brilliant Story Mr. Skinner and as always I appreciate your time, effort and story telling that you share lovingly with your Fan Base! Proud To Ride In The Jerry Skinner Posse! Cheers From Ohio

I see Erwin Rommel as a conflicted and almost troubled man. Yes, he had a brilliant military mind but his own integrity in the midst of WWII certainly didn't endear him with his superiors. However, his devotion to his men even as he knew the German cause in the war was going to be lost made him revered by those who entered his circle. Patton, Churchill, and Montgomery deeply respected him as a soldier and as a man.

No! I disagree with some of your blanket statements; it’s more like Rommel along with other honorable Germans who were white frequently from upper class circles didn’t like Hitler. And that is why Stauffenberg was supported in his attempt to get rid of Hitler. In fact there were more than 2 dozen serious attempts to assassinate Hitler.

I have an older friend from Clifton TN last name Patrick whose father (probably born in 1900) met Rommel there at the Clifton hotel on the Tennessee river prior to ww2). He was in the area studying the tactics of Nathan Bedford Forest. He was quoted as saying a “man who could do with tanks what Forest did with mounted cavalry” and I don’t remember the rest of the quote!

I didn’t know this either. But it doesn’t surprise me. The American Civil War was studied closely in Europe and the UK. Officers such as Lee, Stuart, Jackson - even soldiers such as the partisan Turner Ashby were familiar names there.
Jackson was revered here in the US but even more so across the pond. So it follows that such a brilliant tactician as Forrest would be well-known to such a student as Rommel.

Love history. One passion is WII because ever male member of that generation of my family
served 'front line' or died in the 'front line' in Europe and Asia. Favour archives as I time travel but
spent much energy pursuing 'war veterans' (of all sides on matters related to escape & evasion)
through out the last 80's & early 2,000 when most died off. One truth I have learned is that
Nazis existed as 'politicians' with many followers and 'small town' mayors the worst of all, but
the vast majority of Germans were not Nazi and were in fact decent human beings doing what
they could to be patriotic, 'sans politics'.
Captured airmen (have lots their archive files & personal accounts) repeat a constant story.
How the common German military acted decently and bravely protected then from 'excited'
mobs on their way stirred up by politicians at bombed out RR stations on their ways to the Stalags.
As it happened I early on stumbled on a long forgotten 'false' Abewhr escape line in Antwerp, Belgium. One agent of theirs (Rene Van Muylem aka ' Donald, aka Robert') penetrated a genuine Belgian a patriot group with a very proud 'Comete' Line background, became a 'Right-Hand' Man to the leader and proceeded to ensure the arrest of 177 airmen. He spoke English well having served as a ship barber in the decade before the war.
An honest honest man he was he confessed it was only 176 airmen when given a 'Special Abwehr' award before he left on holiday at the beginning of August 1944 (most of whom I have studied in detail).
A close friend of a VIP resistance lady, Yvonne Rahier (SOE Mail box Antwerp-Brussels), I corresponded with for a full decade (made heir to some of her papers & photos) told me Rene knew much about her SOE activity because she fully trusted him. She was a witness 'against' him at his trial.
Curiously, he never betrayed Yvonne or her other organization, because as he stated at his trial, 'My business was airmen only'.
Believe he had a grudge because the RAF destroyed two of his Barber shop businesses early in the war).
He never betrayed any of the patriots who helped him in evasion except the one ( a brave good fellow) who was about to try to kill him.
None-the-less had bad luck. Tried and convicted he was executed in 1947. Had his court date been a year later he would have survived the 'vengeance' period and been a very interesting man to chat with. I'm sorry they killed him.

It's American interference, aggression and corruption in an area they don't belong, yet again, that is responsible for the current conflict. Take responsibility for your war mongering nation. The Soviet boogeyman doesn't exist anymore, stop watching so much Hollyweird for history lessons.
