  • Truck 364 recently went back to IGS to have its arm rebuilt. They added a cylinder to level the grippers as it lifts the carts and beefed it up a little bit which significantly changed the overall geometry of the arm. While it performs better than it previously did, it still has a number of issues I’d like to see it overcome. The main issue I see is the very tall packer which they gave massive cylinders making it very slow too. Additionally it just runs continuously when the auto pack is on, meaning you’re almost always dumping on top of the blade since it’s always running and takes forever to complete a cycle. It’s barely shorter than the curbside hopper wall, and thus it struggles to handle one full 90 gallon cart without spilling anything. The speed of the arm is something that bugs me too. Either you run it super slow at idle, or rev it up but have to be very careful to not let it slam as it dumps due to there being no form of cushion. It’s also a pain to rev it in neutral because the operator’s left arm rests directly on top of the shifter while running the arm, meaning resorting to revving in gear looks like it will be the norm on this thing. I’d also like to see a joystick instead of rocker switches. Normally I prefer rockers but when you’re constantly trying to integrate some up/down motion of the arm into extending and retracting the arm whether it be to dump or return a cart or even while going to grab a cart in the first place, a joystick makes it far smoother and simpler. The subpar grip is also annoying, but given that they literally used an Amrep “clamp body” as Amrep calls it, it looks like we could actually swap these flat grippers out for a pair of normal Amrep grippers. Overall, I’m glad to see some improvements but it still has a ways to go.

Glad to see they've come up with a solution for that issue. I would like to see them stick to this general arm style, but try a less complex design in the future. Maybe a little closer to a traditional Australian arm using mechanical linkages to control the leveling & dump angle. If they can do that and tighten things up a bit I think theyll be well on their way to a solid product. Hopefully they keep tinkering with it, would be neat to see it go from what it was, to something great.

Thanks for going out and getting an update on it! Good to see they fixed the issues with the arm. Nice to see him pick up the wm cascade around 7 minute mark. Nice Sierra's on this route. Nice video

Truck is pretty quick! Glad they added that cylinder for leveling, really seems to help a lot. Still some improvements to make but I'm sure they'll be made and the truck will be better than ever.

Nice video.Glad to see they made some changes to this truck. It looks like the arm goes slower than the last time you've filmed this truck

Nice glad to see an update on this truck glad they fixed some problems but it is still got a long way to go I think they need to just scrap the arm design and go with a Autoreach still arm and raise the hopper wall

Is there a patent or other restriction preventing an American company from flat out replicating the proven Australian design? It seems like this is exactly what companies like IGS here and Kann, among others, are trying to get at. It is great to see this trial-and-error process of designing a new ASL, and hopefully the final marketed end result it a quality and innovative product. Until then, I hope no one smashes the grippers on a curb while releasing a container!

well forget a curb, he just scraped it on the street at 9:26. and your comment got me curious, after some research here's what I learned: "there is no such thing as an 'international patent,' and the grant of patent is a prerogative of each national or regional authority." however, you can get what's called a PCT which protects your idea for 1.5-2.5 years across a number of countries but still requires you to apply for a patent in each of those countries if you want protection. even still most patents expire after 20 years, allowing somebody to recreate, for example, the 7000 arm today or darn soon with no patent infringement.

This design is just painful, still better than a Coolhand.

Nice the truck looks cool does this guy do both garbage and greenways because I saw him doing green waste before with the same truck

The trucks all start on trash then return for either recycling or greenwaste after dumping

That arm need a major redesign from what I see. It’s like the arm dumps like it’s a front loader with the leveling part lol

They've made a critical error lowering the kerbside hopper wall on this updated design, compared to the original one. also the the pump flow rates are all out of whack.
I'm waiting to see if Bucher Municipal try and have a crack at the american market, they would kill the competition over night, superior pack would also do well, but their grab would need to be changed for the american carts.

The factor not often addressed is cost. Very few people here will pay more for a better product, and that is likely why American manufacturers products in many ways have only gotten worse over the last 20 years. Lowest cost wins almost every time since the industry here is quickly becoming run by huge companies who only look at initial numbers.
Australian manufacturers still appear to be driven by efficiency and quality. Here theyre driven by who can cut the most corners to make it the cheapest while still throwing on as many useless lights, alarms and proxies to appease their corporate customers demands.
In short, if they bring their products to the states and dont plan on dumbing things down to meet a price point, I cant see them seeing much success.. unfortunate state of things here now.

3amrepmike3 Couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s the sad truth. Really all Australian ASLs are fantastic products, and I would love to see them in use here.
