Honestly the animation here is just as I remember as a kid - grossly hypnotic. That old man hunger was horribly disturbing to watch but I still cant look away. Not sure if I ever really enjoyed Ren and Stimpy or was just too afraid to turn over. Grim. But Great.

Oof, but the quality of it is honestly very rough, even compared to the later episodes. But I guess I can give a pass to a pilot episode.
Now, this is quite important; This, as we know, is the original pilot episode from right where the Ren & Stimpy phenomenon began, and as you can tell, some parts from it were always used in the beginning of the show. Plus, to give a little fact, the pilot, during the making and release of Season Two, replaced the other episode, "Man's Best Friend", because Nickelodeon said it, particularly one scene alone, was quote-on-quote "too violent". That's one reason why John K. had to go.

I love how they only used clips from the pilot in the theme song and never changed it. I never saw the pilot on TV, and I always wondered where those clips originated from.
Jaspers expressions are so unnerving. It’s like if he thinks about something too much he’s consumed by horrific thoughts so he pops on a smile and acts calm to keep whatever sanity he has left
And that weird tendency of John K characters to over-mouth every word they’re saying, while talking really slow. Uncanny valley.
This was the first episode of my favorite show :)

TECHNICALLY it's true that this was the first episode made; it was the pilot used to convince the exec's to greenlight more. However the first episode broadcasted to kids everywhere was "Stimpy's Big Day".
@@shaunrodney even though Doug wasn't as popular as either Rugrats or Ren and Stimpy, I will say I was impressed with how it pioneered the use of nearly-strictly mouthmade sound effects lol
