Definitely agree to house male and females together. If the tank has enough space and hardscape everything balances out.

Praeorbitalis is awesome. They are all over the lake
Once I caught several males in Itungi port
    14 inch
Huge. We ate them. Too large to ship
Extremely slow growing fish. When you see them they are eating whole day long. Couple feeding in the tank is just not enough. All these fish in video was so much fun to catch. All above the sand. Itungi has lots of reeds and that is where thousands up on thousands of these cichlis fry are growing up. Small ,60ft beach seine would yeald 5-10 k of buccos. Local moms buy them and cook them together with bananas and feed their kids with it.

I used to collect this fish in the lake. Those days this fish was hardly known
When I sent first to americ my buddy Peter during thought that they are diseased
.females were very hard to find. They lived down to 100 ft. Landscape was simple
Sand sloping down in about 46degree. Never understood how it keeps that way. Due to this depth it too three days to bring them to surface. Decompression takes time. Few other fish are sensitive to decompression times
Meanwhile one has to sit on shore eat rice and wait
Still it was fun. Once I have collecttedfull color male in 8ft depth but no females
It was unpredictable to know when they will be there
