Sorry for your loss on your gear! I have to start out fresh myself. I’ve been inactive for over 20 years and am excited about getting active again and my gear I have is super old lol. Some doesn’t work lol. So new gear and new shack build coming soon. Hope you get back into your happy space soon. 😎
Welcome back to the hobby! I took some time away too while I was rising my son. I've been putting my shack together a little at a time. Thank you for the comment. 73 de N9JOD
The best way to program a FTM-500 is the SD card. You can use RT systems and your computer to program the SD card. The FTM-500 is very good and the audio quality is much better.
Ditto for the FT-3D/5D handhelds. I foolishly bought the overpriced, proprietary cable only to find that reprogramming this way is hellishly slow. The SD card method is kinda dicey too (the radio doesn't always recognize the card, depending on which computer I used to save the data) but when it works, it's virtually instant. I'm a big fan of RT software, it's well worth the $25.
This is why I live a few hundred yards from the biggest hill within about 70 miles or so of my house and is replete with most of AR's TV towers and central AR's FM radio towers, and about 3/4 of the 2m/70cm repeaters in Pulaski County.
When I had a lightening strike the insurance company told me to buy the most current equivalent equipment and paid 100% replacement cost. I was impressed
I took a lightning strike that took out telephones, VCR, Televisions , and my homebrew 10 meter repeater ! And likely other things I am forgetting ! For fear of having the homeowners insurance increase, I ate it ! Never looked back !
Insurance is a necessary evil. You have no choice but to pay what they demand for premiums and when you file a claim they pay out whatever the adjuster feels like giving you. I like my ftm500. There’s a lot to learn. I’ve barely scratched the surface and am looking forward to seeing all of its capabilities.
You do have a choice. They make it seem a scary choice. I've made two claims in 25 years, one was a plumbing failure and the other hurricane roof replacement. For what I was covered and what I had to pay out of pocket it proved it was a waste. Insurance dropped me and I found out about mortgage insurance, wish I had known from the beginning, would have saved thousands and still had the repairs done.
I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I took a strike about 25 years ago. I didn't have much for equipment at the time but it still did a lot of damage and it sucks. I'm curious to see what you think of the FTM-500DR. I ordered one and it should be here tomorrow. From what I've gathered it has a few complaints from users that could be fixed with firmware but overall it looks like a pretty nice radio. I'm excited. I hope you enjoy yours!
I like the FTM-500 it is not the 400 by any means but i always felt that the FTM 400 was a good 440/2m Base station radio but it really wasnt a GREAT Mobile Radio. I like the fact that the ergonomics of the FTM 500 are similar to the HF Radios and I feel like the utilization in the car youre only a couple of key strokes away from everything in the menus the 400 had a lot more going on. just my .02
I didn't want to make another box opening of that same radio that's out there on youtube. I just wanted to let everyone know what I've been replacing the damaged equipment with. Thank you for the comment.
IMO the VHF market sucks. a bunch of over priced under developed obsolete stuff. where is the VHF all mode radios? SDR's panadapters/waterfalls digital modes etc. todays radios are 30 year old designs in new boxes for ever increasing prices.
Complains, complains, complains. You are lucky to get anything at all. If you don't like the new radio I will send you my FTM-400 for that radio. Say "Thank you very much" and move on.
I'm sure you would. I am glad I have it. But I was also comfortable with the radio and equipment I had. But you're right, I should be happy I got them replaced with newer stuff. Thanks and 73

I always format the card in the radio then download shown by RTSystems. It works.
I find myself do both. But you're right. The easiest way is to save the codeplug to the sd card.
@@Darrell_Coquillette Codeplug is dmr jargon this is a fusion radio.

There is always a choice we just don't make it. It's not a necessary evil it is an evil that we allow because we are complacent and they know it.

You got that right. Thank you for the comment.
that really sucks haveing to play the insurance game!
Some old typical unboxing video just like everyone else’s. Endless rambling and looking a box with hands moving around.
No idea what this video was for? Confusing
