Not sure if it's been mentioned already, but the "boingy-boingy" instrument is called a jaw harp. It's also used to lay the rhythm in the triple triad theme.

I'm not sure it's a matter of nostalgia. I never really played 8 (only like, an hour over at a friend's house) but I played 10 many, many times. And I _still_ like the TT theme better. The Mi'ihem theme is just kinda repetitive.
Sidenote, although to a lesser extend, the jaw harp is also used in Shadow's theme in FF6, and the Taejin's Tower theme in 13.

I think what happened with Wakka's brother Chappu was the reason Wakka got so invested in Yevon and blamed all Al Bhed for his death. Important story plot to understand Wakka.

He was already against Al Bhed before that and chappu taking up machina was symbolic of a betrayal that led to his death and reinforced the teachings he's been a part of his whole life this far.

I played FFX and lost touch with it over the years. When I found it again recently and watched FFX-2 endings, it was the closure I never knew I needed but got after learning the story line. FFX has been cemented into my soul. Beautiful, is an understatement to how well this game and story was made.

I love this game. And I made sure to speak with every member of the group at every opportunity, even multiple times until they repeat something they said already. Players can get a lot of info on both the story & dynamics doing so just as they do in finding Jecht spheres laying around all over Spira. Like why Kimahri is with Yuna and how she ended up in Besaid despite Bevelle being where she's originally from. Little things like that are gems in Final Fantasy games I enjoy most.

So glad this video popped up in my suggested. Final Fantasy X came at such a tumultuous point in my young life and I saw myself in Yuna, I admired her resolve and her strength. I thought “if only I could be that strong.” I smiled, a lot back then, even when everything was falling apart, so much so that people asked “why do you smile so much” or said “it’s weird.” I stopped smiling one day and that was when the weight of everything I had to experience began to crush me. Ultimately I wasn’t as strong as Yuna, but I always find myself returning to this game and its sequel when I am at my lowest. X-2 wasn’t awful or unnecessary like other comments have stated, but that audio drama was. 😂

I've been really enjoying the video so far but there is two things i wanted to point out. Seymour does have a compelling motivation to be a reoccuring villain, and it is explained in game, though apart from the jyscal sphere and the flashback of him and his mother in the Blitzball dome in Zanarkand, the big details are missable through an optional sidequest.
He isn't pining after Yuna, she is a means to an end. He wants to become Sin so he can use its power to kill everyone in Spira. He knows the final aeon process due to his mother being his guardian and becoming Anima. Through the trauma he experienced in life he has snapped and truly believes the only way to end suffering in Spira is to end life in Spira. This is all explained in the Anima sidequest.
The second thing is there is an easy way to see the sphere grid as a whole. You can zoom all the way out actually. And everyone's paths are color coded. Still takes a little bit of looking i suppose but it is simple enough to figure out where to go.

  • @caelum1156

Something important regarding Jecht: He was only verbally abusive towards Tidus, and his drinking was a result of his skills as a blitzball player were fading with age. It's why he went out to sea to train, which is something he never did prior. The only time Jecht did something physical towards anything while he was drunk was towards the Shoopuf, and the fallout of him attacking it lead Jecht to never drink again.
I don't think the game made any attempt to handwave his abuse towards Tidus, as he does get to confront and finally say to his father that he hated him, but rather show that Jecht just wasn't equipped to be the father that Tidus needed. Jecht was apparently quite kind to Yuna, so its implied that in Jecht's mind, that he had to be kind to girls and tough with boys, and he was very tough with Tidus, who responded negatively to that kind of parenting 'style'.

This video immediately teleported me back 20 years in time, sitting in the corner of my parent's cabin, having been finally allowed to buy my very first console after months and months of nagging. It came with this stupid Japanese RPG I didn't really care about, and a copy of Devil May Cry I was fawning over. After finishing DMC, I didn't really have anything else to play on it, so might as well see what this other weird game is about. Life. Changed. Forever. This was probably the first time I ever experienced a story which just wouldn't let go, even after finishing it, and I have been hunting for its equals ever since.
I might have some exceedingly strong sentimentality over this game, but even trying to look at it objectively, it is by far the strongest and most impressive story and worldbuilding of any FF game before or since. I've gone around and played most of the FF games by now, and nothing has managed to quite scratch that initial itch that FFX brought on to a young impressionable myself. There are a lot of tragedies in the FF series, but nothing hits me as hard as watching Yuna breaking down ,trying to deny reality, right before Tidus jumps off the ship (Oh, and thanks for ruining that beautiful and hauntingly sad ending by tacking on a completely unnecessary sequel which made it completely redundant. Real good job there Square. I'll just continue to go about and pretend it doesn't exist).
I really do wish Square would try to go back and make a completely different game than their usual affair like this one. One less gloomy and full of brightness and life, even if the story itself is at the end of it all a tragedy, and with actual likeable characters who are properly fleshed out with their own motivations and agency. And while I'm at it, it wouldn't hurt to get rid of their hack and slash-esque combat which completely removes any challenge and problem solving other than just mashing buttons in the correct order, which have plagued their latest games in the series. Seriously, if I want to play War of God, I'll play War of God.

You hit the nail when you said you have sentimentality affecting your feelings about this game. You could replace all references to FF X in your text with FF7 or FF8 and it'd be my experience. I'm not trying to sound argumentative here, just pointing out that it seems like a lot of people adore the first FF game they played and try to search for the same feeling from other games afterwards, usually failing to find the same "magic" in them. For me, I found that magic first in FF7, then in FF8. FF9 did not do much for me and unfortunately I did not even finish FF X. I realize that might sound backwards to you, though. :)

Omg the Yunalesca fight blew my mind as a kid! The song that plays as Yuna, this quiet & soft spoken teen with such strength/fortitude makes her grand speech, strengthening both the player & the party's resolve before entering this epic 3 stage boss fight (and I despise the word epic). Wish you showed a bit of her other stages the visuals are top notch. I don't think they've made a comparable FF game since this one. FFX-2 was a fun 'summer vacation' feeling game although the end boss was underwhelming with barebones music (so disappointing) no other FF made me care so much about the characters/world/lore/ending/etc. The mix of ruined future city, Asian tropical island décor, the submarine themed Al-Bhed; the world building presented at every turn is 10/10 and I wish they'd revisit the world of Spira. So beautiful!🥰

Jecht's story isn't one of redemption so much as it is one of understanding. There was things Tidus didn't see of his father and how he showed his love wasn't clear to Tidus as a kid. Yes he was an alcoholic and he did shit he shouldn't have but that was minor and resolved in the stories told of his journey. In the end, Jecht's love throughout the entirety of Tidus's life is made obvious but Tidus knows that his hatred of him is what made him who he needed to be to free Jecht of what he became in Sin and so that's why his final words to him are "I hate you" because through this resentment is how he came to find out that his dad loved him and that he loved his dad too because the line between love and hate is very fickle.

I personally like that they made jecht have his redemption story offscreen , coming from someone with parental issues as well, the way I see it is that; yeah the parent was an ass, but they had good intentions and sometimes it’s not entirely their fault either. My parents had harsher parents who ingrained that toxic “tough” love into them so when they had me, they assumed because they weren’t AS harsh as their parents, they were doing it right. I now know not to hold it against them because it went back to how THEY were raised. So the final battle with jecht and how awkward they both are hit me hard. Because that’s how I am with my mom. I didn’t need to see a redemption to understand the feelings between them and it still makes me cry to rewatch that scene.

56:00 I don't see any other comments discussing this, so I'll say it: I think you have some misunderstandings of the order of events and what is actually happening here. Firstly, Fayth explanation explicitly states that Zanarkand was destroyed first, and then the dream Zanarkand was summoned after with help from the survivors. The summoner who did that, Yu Yevon, then summoned Sin as his armor to go and get revenge, but lost his humanity in the process, possibly unintentionally. As for the location of dream Zanarkand, I don't see how you got the conclusion of it being physically located in the world, let alone the ocean - it seems pretty clear that it is sort of "virtual" as in it is entirely a dream with no specific physical location in the world. That aligns with how other summons can continue to "exist" even while they are not actively summoned into the physical world, they don't teleport to and from some secret storage location in the physical world. This is also why Tidus is able to sort of re-enter the dream world by touching the Fayth wall, it's likely Auron entered the dream Zanarkand the same way. The Fayth can't stop dreaming as long as Yu Yevon lives and refuses to end the summon, but it seems they were at some point able to get Jecht summoned into the physical world, and then Auron and Jecht as sin helped get Tidus out into the physical world as well. The place Tidus wakes up in the physical world is just where Jecht/sin left him. So, Sin was never intended to "guard" the "physical location" of dream Zanarkand, because it doesn't have a physical location and Yu Yevon probably didn't expect the Sin thing to turn out like this. It all sounds like it was done in the heat of grief and anger; so many lives lost to war, a desire to recreate the city that was lost, and a desire for revenge against the attackers, not a healthy mental state to be in when summoning powerful magic armor.

??? Pretty sure Jecht was never abusive towards Tidus. He might have accidently put him down emotionally, but it wasn't abuse. He just wanted to show off to his son because he wanted his son to think he was cool. The only reason Tidus hated his dad was because of his mum being a massive simp and Tidus was a mamas boy. Any time Jecht was around his mum acted like he was invisible. So if anything, it was his mother who was abusive, just he blamed his dad for it.

Iirc, the intended method of discovering the secret coordinates was to discover all the Al Bhed Primers and fast travel back to locations that had those blue plaques mounted to the walls/sides of the environment. This is actually pretty cool except for the fact that some Primers are _literally missable_ and if you missed your chance to get it, and you saved your game past that point. You HAVE to start over the entire game, _but_ , retain that files Primer Knowledge.
Which admittedly, the first time is pretty cool when you're playing through Ruined Zanarkand when Rikku first finds you, and you can somewhat understand the Al Bhed this time. Other than that, it is disgusting in its implementation and absolutely rude in punishing players who just weren't perceptive enough and are then required to sink another 7 hours into the game just to find that 1 Primer they missed _if_ they even know where it was that they missed it.
At least the internet spills the coordinates/messages the Primers reveal so it's not too much of a hassle but my god, when I first played this and I figured _this_ was why I missed 3 Primers on my save file I think I would've gone insane

I love the insights you've brought to the game in this review. I feel one point I disagree with you on, however, is the relationship between Jecht and Tidus. I agree that the game does work at painful lengths to turn Jecht into the tragic hero, to push the player to forgive him, but I think this is offset by the final confrontation. The last thing Tidus says to Jecht is, "I hate you" - then goes on to embrace Jecht at the end. Furthermore, it is shown through Tidus growth, that he /does/ look-up to his father in some manner in his wanting to be a blitzballer, and his wanting to even be able to do the same shots that Jecht can and "be better" than Jecht, and even using the same type of weapon that Jecht himself used. The game I believe goes at length to prove to the player why Spira loves Jecht, even though Tidus cannot, and this comes to a head when Tidus, despite it all, still cannot say "I love you" to the man who sacrificed himself to save a nation, a man who he did his best to be just like and eventually outdo.
I agree that the relationship could have been explored more, in particular why this is such a nuanced relationship and why Tidus cannot love the man, but I think the relationship is appropriately explored.

Jecht was more negligent than abusive.
Also, Tidus is an extremely well-written character, easily the best Final Fantasy protagonist. Anyone who hates him or finds him annoying does not fully understand and/or appreciate the depths of this game's story and characterization.

Its funny as i just reinstalled the game recently and end up on your channel. Cool video. This game was ma true first j rpg as a kid and going back at it now with more maturity made me realised one thing. How in touch with our times the story is. The concept of Sin(the boss), the idea that humans fought each other with machines so powerful it could destroy earth...trying to always control everything and thats "how" it was born. That nature will always take power back over humans ,one day or the other and that we cant control it. And so much positivity and deep philosophy following Tidus growth. I cant stop but feeling a huge flow mixed of nostalgia and happiness replaying this game. (Ps : the fighting system is so good if you get intouch with its basics such as overkill, switching char, boosting and much more...)

As crazy as the jump from 90s media technology to early 2000s was, the jump from early 2000s to mid 2000s was absolutely insane.

Love your FFVIII "love story" and this video as well! For me FFX is my love story, all the emotions you felt with VIII I felt with X... For some reason the the emotions that the game make me felt really struck something deep. It was one of the only game that has ever made me cry and be sad, but at the same time trigger a rush of adrenaline and happiness... FFX will, no matter what people criticize, be the epiphany of gaming for me! It was the introductory drug into life of gaming and the last nail in the coffin for my love of the FF world! Amazing video, amazing work and so glad there is someone to relate to regarding the love that FF games bring into this sometimes dark world

And I can also relate to your story about the rush of memory 20ish years back when you remembered how you were first introduced to the game. Although I suffer from problematic long term memory retention, the mention of FFX brings me back 15+ years into my friends living room who asked me to come and check out his new PS2 (at that time I couldn't even dream of owning it) and the first game he showed me was FFX. I remember so clearly his frustrations of him can't beating SIN and continuing the story and me helping him out with the strategy since I played FF VIII and VII prior so I knew how the game works. Him finally beating the SIN second fight in and me being so proud I felt like a FF pro. It's funny how so little can evoke so many things in our minds
