Swoon was the peak. Technique is my favorite song.

There's something about certain bands' first records. "Lions in My Own Garden (Exit Someone)" and this album were cheaply produced - and are all the better for it. The quality of the songwriting shines through.

Very insightful view on a great album

There's a certain charm to that jangle pop sound of UK bands of that era. It emanates the whimsical charms of young kids engaging with their passions in a free uninhibited way. Many of the songs from early sprout (aka most of swoon) were written by Paddy with just himself and a guitar. A lot of the demos are available on youtube, I suggest looking them up as they're just as great as the record itself. As with many art forms, I think once it becomes a career, a lot of the magic and freedom is muddied by expectation and responsibility. I think there's a huge difference between "I produced this album to fulfill a contract obligation" and "I produced this album to express something in me the best way I can" and Swoon wreaks of the latter.

Swoon is also my favourite Prefab Sprout album. I love the song Cruel.

I adored both those records when they came out. The feeling and atmosphere of them was so unique. Nothing else sounded like that. Very under produced. I think they lost something when they moved to the later more produced sound.

    Nice! You have great taste.
When I first moved to Atlanta in 84 or 85, I was listening to WRAS on my Sony Walkman, driving a rusted (West Virginia!) Datsun B210, "Green Isaac" came on and I was blown away.
Those first 3 or 4 albums are still amazing. I think "Pearly Gates"is the saddest, most beautiful song ever written.

I'm glad you mentioned Pearly Gates which I too consider Paddy's just song, sad yet also celebrating mortal life at the same time (Wenders film Wings of Desire comes to mind as a cinematic equivalent). I too think Swoon is the best album. According to the biography Paddy wrote many more albums of material. I often wish another band would record them, if he no longer will, just so we can hear them!

This convinced me to finally buy the first two records. Both fantastic but Green Isaac and Goodbye Lucille #1 are particular favorites of mine.

I hated Swoon when someone first played it to me. However, his later stuff knocked me over. He is right up there with Ray Davies, John and Paul, Brian Wilson, etc. The only great modern songwriter I play over and over. This is the only time in over half a century of record collecting that this has happen.
