Ranking the Records: Yes
In this latest edition, Tony reluctantly wanders into the beehive of all internet fan beehives, the band Yes. You have your complete deniers who try to tell you that Jon Davidson is just as good as Jon Anderson, and you have your purists who aren't really buying anything that Anderson is not involved in. Although Tony has tried to give it a chance, both live and on several post-Jon A records, you can count him in the latter category.
HENCE, we won't rank anything past 2001.
You will note that there is a small quip about the AWBH album which in hindsight we probably should have included although Tony finds the project to be very disappointing. Nevertheless, there's enough great music and a great creative spirit which is valuable to us fans everywhere despite your feelings on what some consider to be lyrical nonsense. Tony confesses that he saw them live every year from 1975 through the mid-80s and personally sung along to all the gobbly-gook. Please leave your own lists (or not) and your thoughts about the proggiest of all prog bands, Yes. We would appreciate your subscription and please do us a favor by hitting the like button. Thanks for riding a long and we'll be back soon for some more fun.

XTC: 40 Greatest Tracks
Переглядів 13821 день тому
In this episode, Tony tries to limit his list to 40 XTC masterpieces from the pens of Partridge and Moulding. Probably the best psychedelic pop band from the '80s. It is quite puzzling that there has not been an abundance of great releases from anyone from the XTC camp since their demise. We certainly recommend to any of you to poke around UA-cam for interviews of the boys. Some of the details ...
Weather Report: 20 Greatest Tracks
Переглядів 9721 день тому
In this episode, Tony heads back to the Weather Report camp to report on his 20 greatest tracks. You will notice that there is a greater number of tracks from the later band than would typically show up in any normal Weather Report list. However, Weather Report is a band where Tony really doesn't have a favorite era, so the lists reflect that. Please share your thoughts and your lists with us. ...
The Keyser Crew Present: Our Five Most Overrated Records (Jay, Dino and Tony)

Lost Acid Masterpiece: Skip Spence's Oar (1969)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.28 днів тому
In this episode, Tony celebrates/introduces the incredible penetrating and haunting and sometimes chilling lone wolf masterpiece, Skip Spence's Oar. Recorded entirely on his own, following a release from being jailed in New York for an attempted axe attack on a former band member. Skip Spence astonishingly wrote these songs in his head while imprisoned and recorded them alone in a Nashville stu...

Ranking the Records: Steely Dan
Переглядів 29128 днів тому
Today, Tony takes a little time to visit his snooty friends with their goatees and berets in their local hipster coffee houses to try to call out the real substance of the band, Steely Dan. Often, I've always felt that the true brilliance of their music was almost overshadowed by this "I know better" attitude, which evidently emanated from their perfectionist tendencies and jazzy asperations. N...
Ranking the Records: Sparks Part 1 (with Dino Devic) #27-#11
Переглядів 180Місяць тому
In this episode, we get part 1 of the Tony and Dino Sparks extravaganza. Being that we're the most rabid Sparks fans within a 100 mile radius, it is truly jaw-dropping that our lists are fairly similar with few exceptions. What makes this all the more interesting is that we never listened to this band together until we attended the most recent concert in 2023. Nevertheless, this band is rife fo...

Everyone ripped off the fall…..
what do you mean by communication from your point of stand?
Perpetual Change is a masterpiece....great tune to listen to on headphones. Love Tormato as well.
Glad you included the ABWH album and it's one of my top 10 Yes albums. I do class it as a Yes album BTW.
Just who is Jon Davidson? Aha i get it, he's the guy who replaced Ian Anderson Yea?
LOL! You're not qualified to rank Yes albums. You're a Jon Anderson fanboy. Why you're recognising Drama when Anderson had nothing to do with and yet say the Yes albums stopped in 2001. Hypocritcal much? You can't even spell Jon Davison's name correctly. Stick to your own lane and gush over Anderson's lame solo albums. Anderson is never getting back in Yes and good riddance.
Interesting comments... and you've inspired me to update my ranking, being a fan since '76... 1 Tales From Topographic Oceans (my first Yes acquisition in 1/76, always my favourite) 2 Fragile 3 Relayer 4 Close to the Edge 5 Going For the One 6 Tormato 7 The Yes Album 8 Keystudio 9 Magnification 10 Fly From Here (Return Trip) 11 ABWH 12 Time and a Word 13 From a Page 14 Yes 15 Drama 16 The Ladder 17 Union 18 The Quest 19 MIrror to the Sky 20 Big Generator 21 90125 22 Talk 23 Heaven and Earth 24 Open Your Eyes!! (can't get any worse IMO) there's my take, still not a Rabin fan!
I saw a show on the 1991 tour. Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo, Michigan. They played on a revolving stage
I saw that same show in Bay Area CA.... Wasn't' this the union tour? both band incarnations.
@thomasfeiller2207 Yes it was. Many members on stage
@@kevtruth The audience was like that of Pink Floyd; civil, courteous, shut up and listened to the music.
Thanks for making this! For every fan it'll be different - for example, Bend Sinister is my favorite Fall record because I really appreciate how it, more than any other Fall record, maintains this consistent mood and feeling - ominous and brooding. Also, just to nitpick, I think you vastly overrate Reformation Post TLC (which I view as one of, if not the worst Fall record) and underappreciate Light User Syndrome (CHISELER!) Cheers!
Nice list...
Blindness! Snap!
Got a trove of Costello karaoke here: ua-cam.com/play/PLTgNxKW7-c-GdHWl_o1YUIrcgYz336NQq.html&feature=shared
Great list. My favorite is Moonlight on Vermont.
Stevie Wonder is man blessed with an extreme amount of talent. 4:35
Faron Young, the opener to follow up Steve McQueen LP, also sounds unhinged enough like it belongs to the Swoon era. And then the rest of the album is the new, trimmed direction.
I'm a white man a decade (or more) older than you. During my time in service in the 1970's my black brothers-in -arms turned me on to Stevie's genius. Needless to say, I scooped up every new album he made! After he fulfilled his initial contract obligations (age of 21?), he had complete artistic control. His music surely reflected this. Hi songs escalated beyond perfection in my mind . Light years beyond any other artist in my opinion.
He is a genius. My favorite song by him 'Saturn'.😊
Lick My Decals Off Baby, 25th Century Quaker, Ant Man Bee, Pachuco Cadaver, Moonlight On Vermont, My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains, Kandy Korn, Ella Guru, Best BatchYet, and Abba Zabba, could be my top 10.
I saw Tood in Pensacola in October. He and his band were just fantastic. I should have seen him a lot more.
Why wasn't Dogfight Giggle a smash hit?
Yes. Innervisions is the best
I agree, 'Swoon' is unique, I still have have three early singles on 7 inch, 'Don't Sing', their third, is the first track on Swoon, and another obtuse classic. I still, like you enjoy the other things they did, but just as great pop music, rather than the otherworldly atmosphere of Swoon and the brilliant first three singles.
im not waiting for..tired of waitin so tireeed of waittin soooo tried of waitinnnnn
As a 25 y/o Aussie, I am so happy to hear people talk about Rick. He is so underrated across the globe but especially down under. If anyone I know hears the Super Freak baseline, they think I’m playing MC Hammer. So thank you so much for covering his discography my friend! My Top 5 ranking: 5- Bustin Out Of L Seven 4- Fire It Up 3- Throwin Down 2- Come Get It! 1- Street Songs
I'd say that was Paddy s Songwriting tour de force. SOmething both post punk and progressive-jazz in this first LP. It was both the most ambitious and the most amateurish album. (i might be re-wording what you said) "Steve mcqueen" was my introduction to the band , and maybe the best balance between sophistication and pop in their career. Prefab became much more a pop act (in the best sense of the term) after that.. The different stages of the band make it one of the most mysterious act of the eighties.
I'm about the same age as you guys so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that I agree with you on a lot of these... Brothers in Arms, The Wall, The Long Run, No Jacket Required, Nebraska, Back in Black. my five sacred cows are: Pet Sounds- The Beach Boys. Because Sir Paul feared this record, it has become revered, but I can't get past the cheesy falsettos and overall dated singing style. Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder. I love the preceding five albums by Stevie, but this one is a little over valued. Some of the weaker songs like Isn't She Lovely are just too long. We're not dealing with "Voodoo Chile " here! Never mind- Nirvana. I liked the grunge bands when they came out and knocked out hair metal, but I don't think the style has aged well. I do still like a lot of the Stone Temple Pilots songs though! Aja- Steely Dan. I love the 'smart rock ' but not the 'pop jazz" Dan. What's Going on - Marvin Gaye. Love Marvin. This record has 3 of the greatest songs, (What's Goin' On, Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me) but the rest is strictly filler.
The garage on the cover is still there in Druid, North Wales .
Love your list, Tony. I adore this band and you're right, they could have been huge or at least more appreciated. I'll attempt a list of 40. Give me some feedback - Kevin 40. Garden Of Earthly Delights 39. My Brown Guitar 38. What In The World?? 37. Wake Up 36. Scarecrow People 35. The Meeting Place 34. Bike Ride To The Moon 33. Dear Madame Barnum 32. When You're Near Me... 31. That Wave 30. Then She Appeared 29. Collideascope 28. Snowman 27. Poor Skeleton Steps Out 26. Complicated Game 25. No Language In Our Lungs 24. Mole From The Ministry 23. Great Fire 22. Vanishing Girl 21. The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul 20. King For A Day 19. Day In Day Out 18. Towers Of London 17. Ten Feet Tall 16. My Bird Performs 15. That Is The Way 14. The Wheel And The Maypole 13. Chalkhills And Children 12. Fly On The Wall 11. Scissor Man 10. Respectable Street 9. Mayor Of Simpleton 8. Senses Working Overtime 7. Season Cycle 6. Making Plans For Nigel 5. All Of A Sudden (Its Too Late) 4. Ladybird 3. Runaways 2. Love On A Farmboy's Wages 1. Earn Enough For Us
Super list.
I dig OK Computer. With the exception of a couple songs I think it is quite good. My problem is with the following album, Kid A - too many bleeps and bloops and electronic stuff going on. Someone may convince me someday that Van Morrison Astral Weeks is a great album. Good show fellas
Probably the most overrated underrated band ever, sorry to piss on your bonfire
My favourite has always been The Royal Scam
It is a very strange record. The lyrics are from philosophical to a lot of dirty jokes and such. But some things lurch, and then there are moments that are beautifully put together, so you know he understood music. A very worthwhile record but not for everyone.
I am desperate to buy The Fall 7" single 2 Librans, it's the only single i don't have and would like to get one before i die.
Great list! I believe Todd dreamt "Lost Horizon"
You did this Skip Spence explanation on your podcast excellently, eloquently -- the way you spoke was with a voice of expertise & it was a pleasure to listen to someone who knew what he was talking about -- like a pro. The pauses added to the narrative were sincere & effective. Good job. You could do an equally fine job with Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, Judee Sill & Karen Dalton.
Perverted by Language was one of the first Fall records I ever bought !
Perverted in my top ten
Hex is close to my top five
Ooooh ! Almost forgot about Grotesque ! Gotta be close to my top three and Slates
I like Room to Live ! My top 3 Wonderful and Frightening This Nations saving Grace Live at the Witch Trials In no particular order !
Ooooh ! Almost forgot about Grotesque ! That's close to my top 3
Interesting ranking. The Fall suffered from some terrible production especially in the later years, as highlighted in this listing. Not always, Your future our clutter was pretty good. Overall I think I'm with you mostly, great to see Slates up there. That was fun thanks.
In spite of its obvious tecnical flaws, Diana is a truly beautiful song. Diana and Weighted Down are my favorites. I play and sing Weighted Down occasionally. Brilliant lyric.
Thanks! Long time syd barrett fan...spence is a little more musical...if thats the right word. Brilliant.
Such a fantastic and unique album I suffer with schizophrenia as well I admire your collection have you heard about the story of Craig smith aka Maitreya kali another masterpiece that's a ablum I can really feel same with Skip Spence all come to meet her is my favorite Skip Spence song as well
Oar is unlike any of my other records.
I'VEEE BEEN DREAMIN OF UUUUUUUUUU, KEEP THINKIN OF UUU, KEEP THINKIN,,,,KEEP THINKIN
Katy Lied is my favorite. The rest shift around and change weekly. Your channel needs more love, brother
im glad yt recommended your show..
Thanks for spotlighting this fantastic band. Their live shows never disappoint.
Ranking Take It Easy so low is practically criminal. I get the appeal of Nite Flights, but the first-era albums stand head and shoulders above-they carved out a sound so distinct it defies simple genre labels. From the debut onward, they felt like an entity all their own. The later work is fantastic and deserves appreciation, but it’s a different experience altogether. It frustrates me when the early albums are dismissed as childish or too “pop,” when, in reality, they were anything but. The arrangements, the lyrics, and the overall aesthetic that the Walkers cultivated have a depth and distinctiveness that set them apart from the other groups of the era. In short, those first three albums are the golden era.
Thank you for covering Nick Drake. I've been a big fan for years, I would love to have heard versions without the (too?) big production sounds
