“Ain’t nothing like a Cold War Christmas!” Hahahahahaha!!! That was great, Ben.
That NORAD officer better hope that "Santa's Sleigh" isn't a barrage of North Korean cruise missles with high-yield nuclear warheads. 🇰🇵
@@luisreyes1963 Precisely!
@@luisreyes1963 I suddenly got an image in my head of a holiday-themed reboot of "99 Red Balloons" except Russia mistakenly fires at Santa's sleigh over the U.S./Canadian border (or Ukraine or Finland) instead of a child's balloon in East Germany.
10:50 - That honestly could been a 50s-60s Christmas song and none would be the wiser. As for Christmas and rap music, Christmas in Hollis is a pretty good song.
That is the only Christmas Rap tune I will accept.
@@OddityArchive But of Course. It’s RUN friggin DMC!
On a side note If anyone who wants to see Christmas Comes But Once A Years beautifully restored from the 35mm print, check out the Fabulous Fliescher Cartoons Restored channel! They just dropped it!
The restored print premiered on Toon In With ME yesterday. The restored Rudolph cartoon can be seen on tomorrow's episode.
Looks way better than the crappy prints seen on countless public domain VHS releases, back in the day!
Love the Christmas remix of Pavanned :)
Reindeer anthem as Shaggs' tune really got me. Merry Christmas.
I like how the NORAD record assumes Santa only deliver gifts for north american kids 🤣🤣🤣
Well, NORAD is explicitly North American.
I haven't seen Kathy Lee's diner for YEARS! I was looking for it on UA-cam. I used to have a VHS copy about a surprise party. Now my memories are coming back. :)
As of my making this, it was on UA-cam (in its entirety) twice over.
@@OddityArchive Not only that it has been featured on Everything is Terrible and the Found Footage Festival
I can picture it now, they were looking for a name for the Christmas Rap group and the producer saw his can of jock itch spray Cruex. Thus a group name was born.
That's why they're always grabbing their crotches. I should have known. 🤣
And a whole lot of scratching too
That kind of scratching is not my stylus...it needles me 😉
Nothing dissipates a child's Christmas cheer than public domain cartoons & Christmas carols awkwardly converted to hip-hop.
Merry Christmas, Benny-boy. 🎄
The way Santa looks, I thought he was going to sing Rudolph the Redneck Reindeer. The Rudolph cartoon I will always remember from Rifftrax. Happy holidays Ben. The Smurfs Christmas album will depress me even more now. The rapping album will haunt me too.
Merry Xmas Ben . I'm from Scranton and i don't remember any Santa Claus . The only eccentric gray haired old man with a fondness for children from Scranton is still alive.
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, but I think I (won’t) miss this one this year.
This was great Ben and was nice to meet your long lost sister 21:20.
Thanks for another great year of content!
I had a kind of new years eve (c)rapping encounter today when I saw an ad for some fireworks of some sort called Grandmaster Flash. I wanted to cry.
Happy Oddity Thursday! Christmas is almost here which I'm not excited for but I'm definitely excited for New Years.
Here’s to 2023! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I hope I'm early enough to tell you that I've been a fan since Max Headroom and I'll be here until OA is over! I love you Ben!
Same.
Holy crap...The Christmas rap CD brings back memories.
I remember hearing it in 4th grade (which was 1992, no less!)...And I remember why I haven't heard it since.
Ben, you've been nailing it lately. Way to end te year! I'm hoping 2023 is full of more excellent Archive!
Ben Minnotte ALWAYS knocks it out the park!
I remember seeing the Everything is Terrible! live Christmas show a decade ago, they played the Kathie Lee video in its entirety before the show started, while the crowd was filling in
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, Oddity Archive!
18:51 immediately after seeing that transition effect , I’ve now got the Voltron theme stuck in my head
Merry Christmas Ben! Another great year of OA indeed!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I remember being at a family do where the DJ played travks from a Smurfs album (because being a family do, there were a few kids there)
This was the 1990s, so one of the tracks was a parody of Shaggy's Mr Boombastic called Mr Smurftastic. This track had one of the menfolk kicking off with the DJ, because the little boys of the party did what little boys do and change it to Mr Spermtastic!
Because boys will be boys, especially when they're Geordie boys!
Gifford's set remember me the Donut repair shop and the Colby's club house, with the exception of the hairy drunk wiener thus.
The slowed-down versions of the Smurfs songs sound like a bunch of drunk guys in a bar trying to sing Christmas carols from a book of kids Christmas songs they found, while the party band playing there decides to provide musical accompaniment for the hell of it
Frank Gifford played for the Eagles. Shouldn't the bear's varsity jacket be green and white?
Yep, Gifford played for the Eagles, right after Henley and Frey booted Schmidt and Felder 😆😅😂🤣
Good job with putting all this together.
As a Eurovision buff, the mix of Pop and Traditional European music didn't phase me one bit. (BTW, some quick music recommendations from the last Eurovision song contest: Moldova's Trenuletul by Zdob si Zdub & the Advahov Brothers and Slovenia's Disko by Last Pizza Slice)
42:12
Also, as the resident furry, I can safely say that there are furries who are way into weirder things that the bear in Kathie Lee's Christmas Video, which I didn't even know existed until now.
Merry Christmas, Ben!
"It was often said that Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Bing Crosby, but boy would Christmas ever be Christmas without Kathy Lee Gifford."
- Tom Shales
First off, now I understand the different voices of the Smurfs in these records. Reminds me of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, where they had completely different voices because it was done in the UK.
As for that first cartoon, God that was sad, especially the girl hugging the Teddy bear until the stuffing (or sand, it seems) fell out of it. ;-(
Also, that Kathie Lee video wasn't half bad, really. That looked more like a small playground themed like a cafe. I could never imagine trying to eat somewhere where one table see-sawed and another had merry-go-round seats, you know.
The 1983 Smurfs Christmas LP was cheap, hackneyed and tawdry. Made Worst by the Fact that they couldn’t even get the actual Hanna Barbera Voice Actors involved.
@@plawson8577 part of me still believes that.
@@JL-sm6cg Me too. It’s pretty shocking it wasn’t distributed by Kid Stuff Records, because they’d seem like the label that would clearly have no shame about distributing something like this with Knockoff Voice Over Singers.
The joke about the mouse stirring had already been done on a Bugs Bunny Christmas special. Speedy Gonzoles is the mouse that informs the audience that he is stirring.
Festive McNuggets? That's an archivism of a food product if there ever was one, now if they only were made in Australian food trucks that caught fire. Better than chestnuts, I guess.
Merry Christmas, Ben, and a Happy New Year. May 2023 be great for you and for Archive.
Festive McNuggets would be even more of an archivism if they had a can of Crystal Pepsi to wash it down with
God, those Christmas raps remind of that stupid rap in "Titanic: The Legend Goes On." Thanks, JonTron, I'll never get THAT out of my head.
Russian Weather Report(errrr.... without the typographic accent!) Tomorrow we will have rain, and the next day we will have rain, and all next week we will have rain, and all next month we will have rain!(then someone asks: "How do you know we will have rain all this time? It's simple! Rudolph The Red knows rain..... dear! LOL (19:05)
I remember listening to Christmas With The Smurfs as a kid and thinking it wasn't really the Smurfs since they didn't sound like their animated North American counterparts. But I liked the polka song because it mentions different Smurfs by name (Smurfette, Brainy, Lazy) and Boxing Day, which we have here in Canada.
Merry Christmas, Ben.
Definitely a poor man's DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.
All things considered. Of course the Smurfs believe in Santa . There dad has the same colors .
I wonder if papa Smurf and Santa get together on the week ends with Father Time and play pool .
For those of you who wanted a romantic comedy starring Shoney Bear and the woman on the cover of "Breakfast in America," in lieu of the therapy you need, here's "Kathie Lee's Rock 'n Tots Cafe!"
22:50 - The long awaited return of Yo! Archive Raps. In which Ben could probably rap better than the media presented, but knows better than to put himself in a situation that would require him to do so.
I'm actually watching this on December 24th, just because I've been so busy lately! What a bunch of Christmas crap you covered lol! That Christmas rap CD sounds like if Hip Hop Noel was its own CD lol!😂
Not bad for Santa Rap, but that Kathie Lee Gifford video is a perfect gift for children this Christmas...
Love that Crew X CD! Had it on cassette back in the day. Just wish I can find the companion to that, published by the same company, but don't know who recorded it, Electronic Christmas Music (a budget Mannheim Steamroller if you will).
Edit: Found it. The cassette itself was only labeled Electronic Christmas Music, but the album cover was Electronic Computer Christmas Music.
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
20:54 oh Uncle Paul...
Bennyboy, many of your videos are kind of depressing... I like it.
Another great Christmas episode...lots of hilarious commentary, and I actually had a copy of that Merry Christmas with the Smurfs album as a kid, from which I remember the "alternate lyrics" versions of Deck the Halls and The 12 Days of Christmas, plus while I hadn't heard Bells Jingle in almost 40 years, immediately recalled it upon hearing that snippet, along with the closing "Merry Christmas, little Smurfs everywhere!".
Wow. This episode was really a great Christmas present. Great job with the curation.
That first Cartoon in that Santa Video just got a fan restoration recently if you want to watch it in like 2k remaster. I find the fact that one of the characters in Rock and Tot Cafe is just A Bear Arm poking out of a Window funny even the VHS case for it has art of just the Arm.
39:11 Fun fact: the kids in this 1995 video are old enough to run for president in '24.
MERRY CHRISTMAS BENNY BOY!!!🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨
it's 12 in the morning and we're getting snowed in and you're making me crave mcnuggets. you are a sadist, minotte
. . . as well as a dictionary-perfect cynic.
"Crew X", Yeah, They knew EXACTLY what they were doing. "Cruex" is a brand of medication for....Jock itch!
Merry Rappin' Smurfsmas, Benny Boy. A new episode of Archive was the greatest Giff anyone could ever ask for.
(Also, why does the jukebox from the Kathie Lee video look like the lovechild of Barney the Dinosaur and the Wiggles' front door?)
Hey kids, do Delta Lady!!
LMAO, great callback to the multiple Leons!!!!
I think I know who Santa is played by, Bob Wells bob walls the Off the grid guy
the best Christmas video you made was with the Japanese fiddler with his wife and daughter and Dennis
19:54- “WOAH!”
the christmas rap CD should be burned with fire. i will gladly do it for you
Oh God, that Christmas Rap album, I was laughing so hard. I need to get a copy. And your typed riffs were hilarious. As for that Kathie Lee tape, that was one of the most boring things I've seen on your channel. I don't know how it could ever keep kids entertained. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Ben!
20:05 had me burst out laughing while watching this at work
Fresh Prince does xmas
ADD has to be the SPARS code for the Christmas Rap album as the final letter is always "D" so the DDA must mean "Drunk Disorderly Asinine" which describes the recording sessions perfectly!
I'd rather woo for furniture than whee for Kathie Lee! At least that commercial was well done! DECORATE A NURSE!
No wonder Mr Garrison wanted to take out Kathie Lee.
I can't believe that Smurfs (when slowed down) sound surprisingly like humans! Did anybody else notice that?
I’m pretty sure the CEO of Starland would’ve gotten fired if they didn’t make the agreement towards the National Broadcasting Company and William Hanna and Joseph Barbara themselves to make their own album that same year. I know the Smurfs exist decades before the series but I just thought that Starland definitely got into trouble there.
@@eascec8374 There were a handful of Smurfs albums on Polydor before the Christmas one on Starland. They all sound like that.
I was disappointed to hear none of the records had the cartoon's voice actors, which tells me that neither NBC or H-B had any say in the matter.
Yeah. So my best guess is that Starland probably got permission to copy the similar ways Polydor did years prior. Not sure what the backstory came in handy though.
The Smurfs album I covered had already been issued (in various languages) in Europe on Polydor/Philips/etc. Starland licensed it for the U.S. and Canada from Polygram--it's listed in the J-card of my tape.
Now that makes sense! Good call.
holy hell the Kathy Lee section is killing me and not in a fun way
Off topic Ben but I was doing a search for that Christmas rap music and I found something right up archive alley. 2 live Jews.
What was the point of the story on your box art? Did Santa just want to remind her that he was hanging out with a group of girls in his long johns years ago? Also check out T'was the Night Before Christmas by Snoop Dog. It's how Christmas Rap should be done!
"Y-es?"
--The Smurfs albums...are so smurfing cheesy.
--Someone told me when I was little that NORAD was my name backwards. Still can't help thinking "Darren" when I see/hear it
--In the video, Kathie Lee Gifford looks like Flo from the TV show Alice. All I could think was "kiss my grits".
Yep! "Kiss my grits" is exactly what I thought, too.
That poor girl in red. I want to give her a hug. She was in her night clothes, and he was in long johns. Wat? Yes. Was this a hostage video?
FYI the christmas comes but once a year cartoon has been restored
Kathy Lee and kids just dont mix, shes better with Ernist and Juillo Gallo
Is that really true about the helium? Lol.
Hey Ben what's your thoughts on me and my friends logo and re-edit of your signoff for klak
Looked good to me. Of course, KLAK hasn't been based in Colorado (or on channel 13) in several years now, so it's truly a period piece.
Merry Christmas Ben n2qfk
Go Smurf yourself. lol
Does part of that rap track sound exactly like passport.mid?! 💀💀💀
I think it's pretty sexist that Dolores Claus never got her own movie 😏
I thought you meant...Christmas rapping like musically...Thats silly of my, Im funny.
That rapping Christmas album was pretty good. The smurfs was just wrong - I was really into them. Kathie Lee - well that was frightening and so fake. The puppetry was just wrong.
SMURF YOU!
Mixing waltz with rap is a horrible idea
I think it is spelled cruex if you know what I mean
That rap was more awkward than the rapping granny in the Ames training video. The synth was just as cheap too.
The last one was so bad I had to scroll away from the screen and just listen to the audio, as funny was your commentary was,...it just wasn't enough, im sorry..😆
Man, you're so cynical and cool.
You're half right.
I’m the 25th like! 😁👍
33 and 1/3rd!!!!
First
''Christmas RAP now with less 20% RAP and 30% more Ham! Please leave the 50% Turkey leftovers at the Door!''
Merry Christmas Ben, and a Happy New Year! 🎄🎉🎊🍾🍺🥧
13:00 "I might be treading on very dangerous ground" -- it being Christmas, wouldn't it be *thin ice*? ⛸
Wish I'd thought of that.
