Hey everyone, I am new to the channel and I love what's going on this far. I own a 2D / 3D Graphics business and have been in the industry for over 17 years. I love the response here, but I think the key to all of this is that we're assuming that the business that you would be doing work for free has integrity. Mrs. Forleo, you appear to have wonderful integrity and your attitude towards this subject is pretty amazing. Not everyone is like this.
I love your idea of investigating the business both personally and professionally. 17 years in, I still have a difficult time discerning if I'm going to be paid for my efforts or if they're going to be stolen. It is my view that this is a stigma that follows many artists around.
Personally, if someone is not interested in signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before ideas are exchanged, they are not worth my business or my time. Every artist should be paid for what they do, especially if they have had professional training.
It's a tough topic of conversation, no doubt.

    Hey Marie,
Thank you for the content that you're providing a 5 minutes video kept me taking an hours and a half worth of notes and made me organize scrambled ideas and just developing and highlighting every point you made, such a rich content in a small amount of time, that literally made my anxiety fades a decent amount as I'm joining the business industry so soon.
Not to mention the great vibe that you provide which seeds me with confidence and relief Thank you again

interesting strategy.....I actually began doing it and redesigned a website for national company. Sent them my design concepts.... no reply nada, zilch....a few months later BAM! They have a brand new website and incorporated in their design several of my ideas! Coincidence? Stole my ideas? I also have had a "client" who wasn't my client copying one of my logo concepts and using it on their website as "their" new logo! And NOT paying me! I did not copyright my logo when I sent it to them. They seemed like a respectful company and they were doing business with the government but I was in total shock when they copied my logo from my printed sample page that I did for them for free to show them what their new logo could look like and nobody paid me a dime! So Marie Forleo your concept of doing the work for free does not always work! :(

+dev ochka yes I don't agree with the idea of providing free work to clients. Lawyers, doctors, and just about every other respectable profession does not provide free work. It's only expected of you when you work in the creative industry and videos like this just keep making it okay to expect free work from creatives. That's not okay, and if you don't expect it from other professions when they find new work...then it shouldn't be expected from us.

Every guru will teach this and every profession work for free within certain limits. The point is to not give the farm away! For instance you don't make the full logo, you just make a sketch, explain some concepts behind it and bring it to a point where they want more. That's where you say "I luvd working with you! My fee is (...), let's see what else is it important for you, it'll take x hours/days to finish, etc".
And, even for the one they used already, you can still market your work: make a tutorial, teaching how you created it! You build authority and prove it was your concept. AND you say you gave it away and they didn't bother rewarding (!) you, therefore it was when you started charging as you deserve. Do you see an avalanche of benefits in this move?
Another thing I'll share with you is, hey... they can't steel from you as much as you can create, if you are good.
An example of working for free is that I just taught you exactly what you can do to turn that unhappy experience around and win, so that you'll know from now on that I can help you with marketing and strategy.

@zolu Following this video, looks like you skipped the first 2 steps and went straight to step 3. Probably not enough trust or connection.

the first 2 steps are research. that doesn't apply to step 3.

That was such a great video and such a great advice to this woman. You I 100% agree with you, that is how I started in constructions too, I walked over to Architects and "invested" free work to show them what I am capable off in order to later become paid jobs, I called it investment. Amen Marie you are as usual did a super job on your advice

So.... Look at them on social media and send them free designs! They will be wowed alright. "Wow who is this person following us that keeps sending us redesigns of our work.". That does not sound like a good strategy. Need something better than that I am afraid.
