Top work Joshi - and fantastic gradin! Looks like you're also a pretty dab hand with the ol'gimbal too... Wouldn't it be great if I captured some of your top tips in a video....
This lens is amazing, I love everything about it! It barely leaves my camera anymore. Just hope they come out with a 75mm or somewhere in that range soon!
The depth of field of 35mm at t2.9 with the width of 22 - what is not to love! 35mm is a brilliant all-round focal length. And then you can go to APSC crop mode for a 50mm Anamorphic look - at the push of a button. And with diopters, close-ups can be done - this could be a one-and-done lens for all round anamorphic filmmaking. Mflare2 from motion vfx is absolutely brilliant if you have time to add / tweak flares in post.
The footage looks really excellent Josh. I am not an anamorphic lens user myself but your video was very interesting, informative and honest. The tan is looking great Josh!. Was that from a June barbeque at the weekend? Keep up the good work. Speak soon. Andy
Great video! Footage looks pretty good. I owned it for a bit and used it on my A7SIII. Some pros and cons imo... Pros: Affordable 1.6x Squeeze Lightweight Cons: Clinical Sharpness (I'd add a Glimmer Glass 1 filter to soften it up a bit) Pincushion Distortion (I prefer Barrel Distortion) This Sirui is good for gimbal and travel work. I use the aivascope 1.5x and Nero 1.5x , they give off a bit more of that "cine-look' you talk about. They are adapters so it's great to have the flexibility to use different focal lengths. However, you have to make sure you're 100000% certain your alignment is on point.
I'm hoping to get one, trusting that a couple of longer focal lengths are in the works as you say. I was going to get nanomorphs, but having the FF coverage opyion makes this a better bet, IMO.
Thank you dude, really appreciate it :) I keep things pretty simple tbh, but maybe I could make a video on perfectly exposing V-Log for the best results :)
At 1:41, 2:21, 2:35, 2:37 I saw a bad case of the wobbles on the edges on the frame I wonder could that be avoided or fixed, overall your footage was great I love this and your other video on the 50mm
Hey Josh! Man, I love the content so far. I'm about to switch from Sony to the Lumix S5 IIX, mainly because of the anamorphic support. My two main things however are colour and quality. If I use 6K open gate 3:2, is it 10 bit footage? Also are there any anamorphic crop modes that provide anything above 4k. I'll be exporting in 4K anyway but just interested to know. Thanks!
Hey Josh, I'm happy to see that this lens doesn't have the typical crazy lens flares. How is T2.9 like in low light and night scenes? Hope you can chime in on that.
The lowlight is really good actually, but that's mostly to do with the sensor as well. ISO 4000 at T2.9 makes it very easy to get clean shots at night :)
I remember you posted a video saying the cropped was better than the full frames. you called out a lot of compelling reasons too (like better rolling shutter). thought that was your favorite- did you change your mind?
I still haven’t changed my mind for the most part. Rolling shutter is still very much present , but the wider FOV that this offers makes it a little less obvious. 1.6x squeeze is definitely more anamorphic and gives more of that classic anamorphic look, so compared to 1.33x squeeze it is better. However, if I was to shoot a full project with anamorphic lenses that involved a lot of movement , then I would probably go s35 :)
I have a MFt 35mm, and 50mm FF surui anamorphic, both fun to show with, but large. I want to checkout this one because I like the 35mm fl, and I apriciate the the weight/small size on the s5. I am looking for you making a real mini-film with it. Thanks for the video.
Sirui lenses have inconsistent squeeze factor, which is a bit of a turn off - not sure if this version is different? It's about the same price as a Laowa Nanomorph, which has constant squeeze. Have you reviewed those? If not, I'd definitely be interested in hearing your throughts.
If you’re using manual glass then there’s literally no advantages to using the S5II or S5IIX… unless you plan on shooting in open Gate , or using the All-I codecs found in the S5IIX, or even the ProRes via USB-C SSD with the S5IIX. So bottom line, if you’re shooting with long gop codecs and don’t need open gate, there’s no difference at all :)
Hey! i got a question for you. ive noticed that when i put an anamorphic lens with ND filter, i see a lot of rolling shutter. How did you by pass this issue?
I have a Sirui 35mm 1.8 and a 24mm 2.8 and I believe the 1.8’s offer a better anamorphic look even at 1.33x because the 1.8 give more bokeh. The colors and detail is still great on them but I need more background blur.
What did you guys think of the footage?
I always wonder how you get clean images, do you usually use black pro mist?
Great shots! I still like the 18mm 1.8 better : a little wider, brighter, closer focus, shorter dof and with AF :-)
It's no anamorphic though lol
@@Filmsimulation I occasionally use the Silver Mist Diffusion filter from Formatt HiTech! You can use code “CAMERON10” on their Website for 10% off :)
Enjoyed this one! Was the footage all done handheld?
Love the shots though I think the lens isn't that great. Not a fan of the pincushion distortion and it seems to have a very fake anamorphic look
I can’t get over how tiny that is! That would be my choice for an L Mount anamorphic for sure
It’s super small, and so light! That in of itself makes this lens my first choice of all the other anamorphics I’ve used !
Awesome video Josh! We loved the footage from it - the London shots look super naughty ❤️🔥
Thanks guys! I appreciate it 👏🏻🥰
Footage looks great! Love the cinematic vibe 🔥

If only we thought of that earlier ;) Hahaha thanks mate!
That is a super lens, gosh so many lens options gotta love it 🙌🏽
This lens is amazing, I love everything about it! It barely leaves my camera anymore. Just hope they come out with a 75mm or somewhere in that range soon!
If they did a 75mm that would be a solid lens - both of them together would work so well :)
Josh your videos are getting so good man
🙌🏼 appreciate this mate, genuinely!

I didn't even touch up on cropping in but yes of course! It's truly a solid little lens :)

Hahaha thanks mate! I think the tan has been gradually added to since we started to get good weather here !

Yeah I hope they produce something a little closer , like a 75mm for example!
Great !
Where is the recording anamorphic menu on the S52X ?.. the specific menu we had on the S5 ..
the lens distortion is quite bad. anyway to correct that in post by chance?
I just want to say you are the best with the S5ii I have seen on UA-cam! I would love to know your video settings!
Thank you dude, really appreciate it :)
I keep things pretty simple tbh, but maybe I could make a video on perfectly exposing V-Log for the best results :)
@@JoshCameron that would be great!
Hmm, there's a bunch of distortion happening in the corners, pause at 2:22. Columns left and right, also in numerous scenes after that.
That's pretty normal for wide angle anamorphic lenses though.
@@izzieb I don't know, I personally wouldn't use footage like that. The distortion is pretty visible to the eye, even during normal playback.
@owlmostdead9492sometimes it’s a style! A cool style
Great review. How did you achieve those film like look? What plugin or lut did you use?
I used Phantom LUTs :) link is in the description of this video!
@@JoshCameron awesome thank
Are you still using FilmConvert and how good is the tool for correcting the distortion on whatever you do use?
So do You prefer this one, or the S35 version you reviewed before? And what about the rolling shutter problem in full frame?
I prefer this one since the squeeze factor is higher and it's lighter, but I'd still crop to APS-C for any shots where the camera was moving a lot :)
@@JoshCameron thanks!

Electronic image stabilisation? turn off?
It was probably due to the in body image stabilisation battling with me a bit :) I didn't have E Stab on though, just the anamorphic stabilisation
That's the anamorphic stab from the s52. Got the same issue when I walk too fast 😂
@@foufou81 damn yikes 🤣

There's only 2 things about this lens :
1. Aperture is a bit slow.
2. And it has big distortion.

Do they make EF -Mounts...?

It does indeed!

I haven’t tested them out , but I would love to! Laowa are a funny brand to deal with unfortunately 🤣
What u think I should get, this or the Panasonic a lens 35mm? I'm very low income but I'm trying to invest in the best lens.
What show is that beat from?
Is there any advantage, to you, to shot this video with the s5II, or s5IIx over the s5? I have the s5, and are wondering?

Amazing lenses but there is big quality difference between focal length. 35mm is the sharpest in both center and corners wide open.
Sigh. I’m just trying to get my 1st camera lol. I’m hoping to get the s52 or s52x
This lens is a quarter of the size and weight of my anamorphic rig, but I still prefer the look of mine (2x on a leica r 90mm 2)
