They have absolute freedom with the animations since it's a turn-based game and the "fast-forward" is optional, unlike HI3 and GI which are limited because their players need those precious time
I will jump in joy if he ever return to ranking HSR Ultimates, his insight is so interesting ! Especially as someone who is interested in animation and possibly wants to be one, and as a HSR player haha

Welt doesn't move much in his animations because he's old, and tired and just powerful enough to never really have to try very hard, so it makes sense even if it is a little visually uninteresting.
It's such a shame seeing him low since he's why I started playing the game lmao. I only recently finally got the 300 choice pity to get him and I'm loving it.

The fire main character ults are so good, now imagine seeing them for the first time during the final boss of the first arc and hearing Wildfire blaring in the background for the first time ever.
Bruh, I was so hyped during that moment. I really went into the story, the emotions, ult splash art, music and all… during the boss fight and after it ended, I felt really good like “what tf did I just experience” type shit. It’s been a long time since I felt that good lmao
Yeah, I remember the first time seeing the physics main ult thinking what a shitty ult compared to everyone else, so when I saw the fire ult in game, it shocked me.
Interesting how Dillon judges the ults on how they execute the animation instead of something like taste, concept and “coolness” also him saying “THATS SO COOL, but one tiny problem” proceeded with dissecting the entire clip is peak constructive criticism wholesome teacher moment lmao.

@@TheDark78MC I think it's because we've had SO MANY animes and games with tomboys or crossdressers that look JUST LIKE and sound like Arlan, so the immediate assumption switches from, "oh, a pretty boy!" to "oh, a tomboy or crossdresser!'
Blame the voice acting tbh. I was convinced for the longest time he's like 12 years old and was very confused when I saw so many shipping him with Asta, who acts and talks like an actual young woman. Arlan is just voiced like a child (not even only in EN, CN does this too) and the appearance is not obvious, so thinking him a girl is not surprising

There's a reason for March 7th name. She was found by the Astral Express crew frozen in ice and drifting in space, with no personal belongings to help identify her. When she thawed out and woke up she had no memories of her past. Not even a name. She picked "March 7th" as her name because that was the date she was found. This amnesia is also the reason she has her camera with her at all times to take pictures of everything that happens. She is afraid of losing her memory again.
@@Pokemaster-wg9gx That too. On a semi-related note - materials to upgrade light cones look like old school film canisters. That's because light cones are said to be memories of past events, and photographs help preserve memories. I think that's a neat touch.
Also because in chinese and japanese her name is 三月七 which can be read as a normal name instead of a date. Mitsuki Nanoka for Japanese, don't know Chinese but yeah, doesn't sound retarded.
Fu Xuan’s is and always will be my personal favorite. The animation of course is amazing but also her voice line does hard af “All things in this world have their laws… yet stratagems, constellations, are human creations!”
You know they make great animations when there is a 4 star champion and a lot of 4 stars in the higher Tiers but Blade honestly deserved to be a little higher he might not have an impact frame but I love the shot with him and his blade before it shatters
Since it`s almost entirely from an animation perspective, not a visual-arts-as-a-whole perspective, I can see putting him in B. It`s visually quite nice, but he doesn`t do a lot of kinds of movement. His falling effect would be cooler if they had an exaggerated jumping aspect as well, like how Seele has a shot with her face far away and then one up-close.
It feels wrong but it is right I mean a part of Blade's ULT is a literal powerpoint presentation and Jing Yuan just does a basic slash with the LL I would say if JY instead used the LL to stab the ground use the LL lightning aspect to create a powerful shockwave that takes out enemies would have been cooler tbh.
Honestly wished there was a sped up ult version to see what you think of their choices on how to cut down on time while retaining the ults impact while playing
I feel like you absolutely NEED to see the Honkai Impact 3rd animated shorts if you haven't yet because I think it's safe to say you'll be seriously impressed with MOST of the work there.
Not really, the execution kinda feels a bit missing, if you look at like Himeko's or PMC's ult after explosion there that unique fire storm going up, but on FX's it feels less, anyways FX is carried by the Visual Effects, the anim is already executed pretty well but the ending just fell less
@@graffiti-grfeedi It's a feast for the eyes AND ears. That whole deepening sound is actually based off the sound of a real black hole that NASA posted, the whole deep and booming sound. So it just works on MANY levels.

As a fellow animator, really happy that you broke them down so well and love some of my fav animations 🥲🥲🥲 i feel like so many of them are underrated simply because players don't like their skills. Though i absolutely love Blade's for the framing at the end. Loved the flower opening up to reveal the (probably destroyed) enemy.
On Jingyuan's ult On the other hand, I feel like the part where it feels like he's so "casual" fits the tone. He's like there floating and towering above his enemies together with his gigantic avatar thingy. It makes him look strong enough that he doesn't really need to exert that much effort to kill those insects below him. It's giving me that nonchalant attitude that Phantyllia's first form gives off.
@@MikealAlexNope, he is powerful. I clear all endgame mods with him. You always need 10 stacks of LL for max performance so having a speed buffer or speed boots is important.
@@BOOMDIGGER Well, ult is powerful in pure fiction. You don't have to be meta slave in order to clear endgame. I even use him in floor 12 MoC with Silver Wolf.
this is actually pretty interesting and insightful to see an actual animator reacted to HSR ult animations, it makes you see the differences between an actual animator and most of the playerbase how to rank these animations. and i'm actually surprised that yukong is the champion of all ult animations beating kafka and jingliu
Personally I found Yukong’s animation a bit hard to follow but that could be because hers is more complex 🤔 Though as an animator I love seeing how he ranks these!
You may be disappointed when your fav character dont make it to the top list guys, Let's keep it in mind that he specialize in animation he knows more in details than what we would simply think.
Honestly it's justified. Got them both and i find their animation really cool yet underwhelming which I cant pinpoint why 😅 this video actually sums it up pretty well
The fire MC's ult is absolute amazing and one of the best skill animations I've ever seen in any game. For all other animations so far, I'm like wow this is so great. But seeing fire MC's ult for the first time was the only time I've been like "wow wtf... holy shit! HOLY SHIT!"
What I find really impressive about this tier list is that the character animations in SS were characters that released within the last 2-3 months. After the initial release of the game. Just shows that Honkai is improving in its animations rapidly.
OMG!! I was waiting for you to do this, because I really loved the animations. I especially really liked the input you put in for the angles and effects. Interesting fact: the one you placed at the top, Yukong, is actually a 4 star! So it’s double as impressive in my opinion!
Love to see you update this with some of the new characters, especially Acheron, THE BEST one I've seen so far, and I agree with you, of the one's you reviewed, Foxy momma is queen, with momma Kafka coming a close second for me. Jingliu is damn awesome too.
@@Geni-yh1pv Seems like you're still pretty new, it's actually the other way around. Since their whole class is balanced around that it's one of the weaker classes right now, the destruction units have been able to do similar levels of aoe with much more damage and single target potential.
@@aouiki2636 Except none of this is true. Some Erudition characters like Jing Yuan and Qingque have good ST damage on top of their AOE capabilities. (In fact, QQ is better for ST than AOE) The only reason people say destruction is broken is that they got 3 limited 5* DPSes pretty much back to back with DHIL being just a little bit overtuned and Jingliu getting reworked so late into the beta that there was no time for proper balancing left. There's only one class that's actually struggling right now is Hunt specifically because they are locked into single target. The limited 5*s have ways to circumvent this (one of them is literally leeching off of Erudition and Destruction characters) but the lower rarity characters of that path aren't that fortunate, with Yanqing being the worst standard banner 5* character by a significant margin for example.
Jingliu and kafka are my favorites. But gepard stomp always hype me up when im strugling in a fight, its like "its not over yet guys, i got u, keep it up", my god never got tired of that ult

Blade follow up attack is the most satisfying thing in the game for me The slow motion build up,him twisting to gather all the strength into one single slash,the close up on his face, slashing every enemy on the field.... Simply the cheff's kiss of the entire animations in the game.
Fun fact: in silverwolf ( 1:35 ) ultimate, she actually has two voicelines. If you play in normal speed, she says "at this speed, too slow.", but if you play in 2x speed, then she'll say "This is double speed?" (so either way, it's too slow for her lmao)
As a starrail fan this was just fun to watch. I love hooks animation in battle. Everyone, even the kids are super agile, meanwhile hook struggles with the weight of her weapon the entire time.
Highly recommended you keep an eye on Zenless Zone Zero, also made by Mihoyo. While I don't think it's fully released yet, there's lots of gameplay showing off some phenomenal animations.
Some character's animation "main course" don't come from their ult. For Jingyuan for example, the go-for-the-kill cinematic animation comes from his follow up attack.
Just trying to figure out the judging criteria helped me understand animation better. I really liked the bits where you excplained what you would change in the animations. It`s cool to compare what I know about visual arts with what I learned about animation here!
Jing Yuan for me was very impressive because it looked effortless. Like he’s just waving a flag. He’s so strong ughh my husband. I’m totally not biased

I love the bursts/ults in this game. and whats great is unlike genshin you can see what lightcone they are using so every character has a weapon that is designed for them
I hope in a couple months time you'll make a part 2 to this, Argenti just released, I LOVE his ult animation, and I've seen the ults for future charas like Dr Ratio too and I think they're all fun and worth just watching and rating.

A good vid that compiles all of the ults there could be tougher to find, especially since a lot of the older ones don't change the camera. The animated shorts themselves would be interesting to see a breakdown/reaction to though.

Yes, it includes the A-ranks that aren't cinematic but if Prof. Goo wants to focus on the cinematic animations he can just skip to those anyways. It's easier to have everything in one vid than scattered across UA-cam. The sound design alone puts Jingliu in a podium position for me. It's proper "wooo look at that" while also having so much personality in it. But I'll be honest, after using her ult constantly I sometimes need to avert the eyes at the impact frame because it's "chonky." It's not so bad with other impact frame but there's just too much white there
Silver Wolf's is probably my favorite bc whenever you switch it to 2x speed, she says "Now this is double speed!" Little fourth wall break I think makes it cool.
I would def recommend some of the hi3 ones, but some of them aren't like cinematics more of an additional buff/combos to their attacks. So I think it would be really interesting to see you view those.
I think it is kinda hard for "passive" ult to feel as powerful as damage dealers one 😅 Bronya or Clara aren't dealing damage, so they are coming up with quite a malus here (thought i am surprised healers and Asta were that appreciated🫶🏻)

The fact that an Animator is reviewing his international peers' works and taking notes is quite the flattery in and of itself; if it advances the Industry as a whole, I'm all for it. Honkai Star Rail shows how far miHoyo/Hoyoverse has come; they are well-deserving of praise, acknowledgment and recognition. This guy should see the other animations they've done. The Genshin concert will certainly BLOW HIM AWAY.
Jing Yuan just can't escape from the word mid💀. Anyway, great video. Would love to see you make HSR animation too one day, if there's a hoyofair animation showcase for HSR.
The anticipation scene in the ult really works well in this game since a lot of RPG games did that. It doesn't ruin the gameplay at all. Unlike genshin the burst ult close up animation kind of ruins the gameplay, like u were fighting an enemy but then u have to force change perspective for a sec just for a fan service close up animation. Sorry just wanna share my opinion.
I’d say in the Serval trailer they give a lot more anticipation when she goes down the stings at the end and I feel they should have kept that for the game.
For me Jingliu will always have the best overall lug because the sound design, the moon motif, the movements all play into her story perfectly, and let’s not even mention what she says if the game didn’t bug

Please do Honkai Impact ultimate attacks next. Some of the really old characters might feel a little lackluster, but theres also a bunch of really inzane ones with impact frames and stuff! Your list would likely be very varied with multiple on D and C but also many A and S

Natasha got nerfed harder than Rosaria from Genshin Impact or Nicole Delmara from Zenless Zone Zero. • Topaz being Numby's number one Fan also means, as Numby is an Astral Trotter who's very Social especially when other trotters are around..... Well, let's just say that Hunting Season is Open just to Keep Numby from getting sidetracked. Yeah, you have to kill all Astral Trotters other than Numby. Not gonna lie though, Topaz is Hella *THIIIIIICCCC* LMAO! • Seele's English VA (Molly Zhang) also has a UA-cam Channel. She's got a video with all of her Stream Shenanigans from the Past year, including the Infamous clip of her Dying to the Supply Rocket in "Lethal Company" during a Collab with Topaz's VA (Sam Slade), @Braxophone, @MinaAoyamaCh, and Rin Taichu. Her Alt Line reads "Disappear among the Sea of Butterflies..... Illusions of the Past!" I know the video is about 2 months old now and you've probably made some progress by now, but hopefully this will let you know of what to expect from here going forward. Also, wait until you see Ruan Mei and Dr. Ratio, and don't look at the Astral Ascension Level 6 for anyone (with the Exception for Lynx and the Kids) as they are Bearing it all. On a semi-related note - materials to upgrade light cones look like old school film canisters. That's because light cones are said to be memories of past events, and photographs help preserve memories. I think that's a neat touch.

You know they make great animations when there is a 4 star champion and a lot of 4 stars in the higher Tiers but Blade honestly deserved to be a little higher he might not have an impact frame but I love the shot with him and his blade before it shatters
Since it`s almost entirely from an animation perspective, not a visual-arts-as-a-whole perspective, I can see putting him in B. It`s visually quite nice, but he doesn`t do a lot of kinds of movement. His falling effect would be cooler if they had an exaggerated jumping aspect as well, like how Seele has a shot with her face far away and then one up-close.

It feels wrong but it is right I mean a part of Blade's ULT is a literal powerpoint presentation and Jing Yuan just does a basic slash with the LL I would say if JY instead used the LL to stab the ground use the LL lightning aspect to create a powerful shockwave that takes out enemies would have been cooler tbh.

Not really, the execution kinda feels a bit missing, if you look at like Himeko's or PMC's ult after explosion there that unique fire storm going up, but on FX's it feels less, anyways FX is carried by the Visual Effects, the anim is already executed pretty well but the ending just fell less

As a fellow animator, really happy that you broke them down so well and love some of my fav animations 🥲🥲🥲 i feel like so many of them are underrated simply because players don't like their skills. Though i absolutely love Blade's for the framing at the end. Loved the flower opening up to reveal the (probably destroyed) enemy.
On Jingyuan's ult
On the other hand, I feel like the part where it feels like he's so "casual" fits the tone. He's like there floating and towering above his enemies together with his gigantic avatar thingy. It makes him look strong enough that he doesn't really need to exert that much effort to kill those insects below him. It's giving me that nonchalant attitude that Phantyllia's first form gives off.

this is actually pretty interesting and insightful to see an actual animator reacted to HSR ult animations, it makes you see the differences between an actual animator and most of the playerbase how to rank these animations. and i'm actually surprised that yukong is the champion of all ult animations beating kafka and jingliu
Personally I found Yukong’s animation a bit hard to follow but that could be because hers is more complex 🤔 Though as an animator I love seeing how he ranks these!

The fire MC's ult is absolute amazing and one of the best skill animations I've ever seen in any game.
For all other animations so far, I'm like wow this is so great. But seeing fire MC's ult for the first time was the only time I've been like "wow wtf... holy shit! HOLY SHIT!"
What I find really impressive about this tier list is that the character animations in SS were characters that released within the last 2-3 months. After the initial release of the game. Just shows that Honkai is improving in its animations rapidly.
With all of the characters that released, a part 2 would be very cool

@@Geni-yh1pv Seems like you're still pretty new, it's actually the other way around. Since their whole class is balanced around that it's one of the weaker classes right now, the destruction units have been able to do similar levels of aoe with much more damage and single target potential.
@@aouiki2636 Except none of this is true. Some Erudition characters like Jing Yuan and Qingque have good ST damage on top of their AOE capabilities. (In fact, QQ is better for ST than AOE)
The only reason people say destruction is broken is that they got 3 limited 5* DPSes pretty much back to back with DHIL being just a little bit overtuned and Jingliu getting reworked so late into the beta that there was no time for proper balancing left.
There's only one class that's actually struggling right now is Hunt specifically because they are locked into single target. The limited 5*s have ways to circumvent this (one of them is literally leeching off of Erudition and Destruction characters) but the lower rarity characters of that path aren't that fortunate, with Yanqing being the worst standard banner 5* character by a significant margin for example.
I just realized that Sushang literally just stands in one spot for her ultimate and makes the Chic do everything 😂
Jingliu and kafka are my favorites. But gepard stomp always hype me up when im strugling in a fight, its like "its not over yet guys, i got u, keep it up", my god never got tired of that ult

Blade follow up attack is the most satisfying thing in the game for me
The slow motion build up,him twisting to gather all the strength into one single slash,the close up on his face, slashing every enemy on the field.... Simply the cheff's kiss of the entire animations in the game.
Fun fact: in silverwolf ( 1:35 ) ultimate, she actually has two voicelines. If you play in normal speed, she says "at this speed, too slow.", but if you play in 2x speed, then she'll say "This is double speed?" (so either way, it's too slow for her lmao)
You should definitely react to the Cinematics from bothe Star rail and Genshin if possible
Don’t forget Honkai Impact 3rd. They have the best cinematics imo

As a starrail fan this was just fun to watch. I love hooks animation in battle. Everyone, even the kids are super agile, meanwhile hook struggles with the weight of her weapon the entire time.
Highly recommended you keep an eye on Zenless Zone Zero, also made by Mihoyo. While I don't think it's fully released yet, there's lots of gameplay showing off some phenomenal animations.

Some character's animation "main course" don't come from their ult. For Jingyuan for example, the go-for-the-kill cinematic animation comes from his follow up attack.
Just trying to figure out the judging criteria helped me understand animation better. I really liked the bits where you excplained what you would change in the animations. It`s cool to compare what I know about visual arts with what I learned about animation here!
Jing Yuan for me was very impressive because it looked effortless. Like he’s just waving a flag. He’s so strong ughh my husband.

Yes, it includes the A-ranks that aren't cinematic but if Prof. Goo wants to focus on the cinematic animations he can just skip to those anyways. The sound design alone puts Jingliu in a podium position for me. It's proper "wooo look at that" while also having so much personality in it. But I'll be honest, after using her ult constantly I sometimes need to avert the eyes at the impact frame because it's "chonky." It's not so bad with other impact frame but there's just too much white there
Silver Wolf's is probably my favorite bc whenever you switch it to 2x speed, she says "Now this is double speed!" Little fourth wall break I think makes it cool.
I would def recommend some of the hi3 ones, but some of them aren't like cinematics more of an additional buff/combos to their attacks. So I think it would be really interesting to see you view those.

I think it is kinda hard for "passive" ult to feel as powerful as damage dealers one 😅 Bronya or Clara aren't dealing damage, so they are coming up with quite a malus here (thought i am surprised healers and Asta were that appreciated🫶🏻)

The anticipation scene in the ult really works well in this game since a lot of RPG games did that. It doesn't ruin the gameplay at all. Unlike genshin the burst ult close up animation kind of ruins the gameplay, like u were fighting an enemy but then u have to force change perspective for a sec just for a fan service close up animation. Sorry just wanna share my opinion.

I’d say in the Serval trailer they give a lot more anticipation when she goes down the stings at the end and I feel they should have kept that for the game.
For me Jingliu will always have the best overall lug because the sound design, the moon motif, the movements all play into her story perfectly, and let’s not even mention what she says if the game didn’t bug

Please do Honkai Impact ultimate attacks next. Some of the really old characters might feel a little lackluster, but theres also a bunch of really inzane ones with impact frames and stuff! Your list would likely be very varied with multiple on D and C but also many A and S

A few things to note since you're now getting ready to play Honkai: Star Rail.
• Biggest thing to note is that the Upcoming update to add Pentacony and the Actual Villains that are the Family of Flames. Highly recommend you check out the Trailer for that and as much of the Animations before so you are somewhat up to spent with "The Story so far...." As they say.
• With Regards to Natasha being "The B00Ba Lady"..... Y-yeah *Nervous Chuckle* Uh she's not the B00Ba Lady anymore. Natasha got nerfed harder than Rosaria from Genshin Impact or Nicole Delmara from Zenless Zone Zero.
• Topaz being Numby's number one Fan also means, as Numby is an Astral Trotter who's very Social especially when other trotters are around..... Well, let's just say that Hunting Season is Open just to Keep Numby from getting sidetracked. Yeah, you have to kill all Astral Trotters other than Numby. Not gonna lie though, Topaz is Hella *THIIIIIICCCC* LMAO!
• Seele's English VA (Molly Zhang) also has a UA-cam Channel. She's got a video with all of her Stream Shenanigans from the Past year, including the Infamous clip of her Dying to the Supply Rocket in "Lethal Company" during a Collab with Topaz's VA (Sam Slade), @Braxophone, @MinaAoyamaCh, and Rin Taichu. Her Alt Line reads "Disappear among the Sea of Butterflies..... Illusions of the Past!"
I know the video is about 2 months old now and you've probably made some progress by now, but hopefully this will let you know of what to expect from here going forward. Also, wait until you see Ruan Mei and Dr. Ratio, and don't look at the Astral Ascension Level 6 for anyone (with the Exception for Lynx and the Kids) as they are Bearing it all. To put it simply, *MiHoyo knows what they're doing!*
