@ dear Björn, Nice Messer and video. Something just troubles me. You are swinging swords like a slashing weapon and not like a thrusting weapon. Does make sense to slash with such weapons? Especially if you wear armor?

@ not to be rude. But with some kind of armor (even light armor), would this weapon able to do damage? It is just I alway see in video that all kind of swords are used as slashing...even in videos were the combatants wear armor.

Beautiful, I love this type of sword 🙂 Since cutting with the albion knekt I've always wanted one of my own but it was far too expensive for me. As usual you breeze through the steps perfectly and I really like that you made a point of it being short enough for one handed use and how to properly use it in close quarters, it's likely why they were designed in the 1st place 🙂 Maybe that's partially why so many people liken it to the Japanese katana which is used in much the same way, as someone of both Japanese and European martial arts I always like finding crossovers 🙂
There's a little pinch of (mythic) history behind that phrase, "Vae Victis", relating to a story about the sacking/sieging/ransoming of Rome by an army of Gauls. The jist is, "Defeat has consequences, deal with it nerd". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vae_victis Anyways, I love that sword and thanks for the neat video! Always been a fan of the kriegsmesser and grosse messer. I feel like "Nuh uh, this isn't a sword, this is just a BIG ASS KNIFE, I don't have to pay you shit" is a wonderfully spiteful little context for a weapon to exist in.
Swords are cool and all, but there's just something about... A literal big "knife" that is just super fun! And yeah, I do think that I would prefer a single edge blade in a fight over double sided. Just more "safe" for myself and the new attack opportunities double sided brings just isn't that appealing.

I hope you do a technique video series with messers like you did with other weapons! I personally am interested in the one handed langes messers, but anything would be valuable
Make that false edge sharp and blade starts to resemble straightened Polish sabre. It's almost funny how in fantasy games, be they tabletop or video, people try to show unusually shaped blades when we see how throughout the whole world form follows function. Chopping blade will have center of mass closer to the point than to the handle. Good cutting blade will be relatively thin on the edge whole wide of the flat. Dedicated thrusting weapon will have a strong and narrow point.
Hi Björn, I'm curious to know how this type of handle affects the messer balance, especially when wielding it in one hand. With longswords, I find striking with one hand quite awkward, I suppose it's due to the long handle and the pommel at the end. It's a bit like striking with a stick by holding it in the middle. Is it less the case with messers ?

It is less the case...i guess because the blade length is a bit shorter with messers thus less momentum to handle

@ The main point is not the vocabulary, it is the intention: Vae victis says "The defeated have a fate of woe because of their defeat", not "grief to the enemy!" or anything of the sort.

@moxigen It's closer to a Chinese Dao and even then there's a huge gap. Maybe a falchion or middle eastern curved sword.

The ostrich was a very popular resource to e.g. enhance helmets with their big feathers etc. Expensive, but not unusual :)
