8 years of Drilling after a year i was a Driller but liked Derricks best , Im 52 years old and full of Arthritis , Got in with Tom Brown Drilling in 1978 age 17. Its not how fast you can make a connection its doing it safe . I pulled off a 1 minute on Rig 2 Tom Brown Drilling in 1980 , but it comes with a price trying to beat the next crew , seen lost fingers and broke arms . the old chain hand is a thing of the past with the turning kelly .
All this negative BS! Lets just all go to the job, get 'er done, and get back home safe. Fast, slow, the only ones who giveashit are the money mongers you are kickin' that dollar up to. Remember, no matter your wage, the company is the one reaping the real reward. I've lived in that front office before. I know what I'm talkin' about. You men are the ones who deserve the real credit. After swingin' tongs and pullin' slips myself just to see what it's like, I've come to respect what you do for us.
Real men figure out what they like doing pretty quick whether dirty or not. They persue it and become good at what they do simply because they enjoy it.
I would say that is a safety issue. I know most drillers don't wait but it all depends on what company you are working for and how much they actually follow safety guide lines. So your memory is not fading none they just trying to make it safer.
Yeah man thats how it is here in texas been on the rig for almost a month now and loving every minute of it!! I kinda got lucky though we dont use tongs unless we really have to but they have this new st80 the "iron roughneck" but ive already had my expeirence with those tongs and well I need to get back into shape so my pusher told me when the good texas heat makes its way back im screwed lol
Hah-! Good one... You got it drill. As soon as I fill my lunch pail with nuts and bolts I'll never use, take a dump over the bank on company time. And stuff some paper in the number one pump so the swivel quits leaking until we're sittin' on a bar stool.
poetry in motion boy's.......didn't miss a beat..........now one of ya pull that return fuel line off that light plant motor and get my truck filled up before the company man gets back.........
The mud is used to cool the bit, keep gas from coming back up the whole and to bring cuttings from drilling the whole back. Its also used to help pack off the walls of the whole to.
That thing at the start are called Table Slips, well there are many names but slips is the most common, and they basically hold the drill string up while your kelly rod or top head drive or elevators or lifting plug or whatever ur doing, (otherwise the rods would simply fall down hole) and those tongs are the break the seal between pipe or kelly and pipe or top drive an pipe, and this rig has a spinna, so that undoes the pipe, and they reverse it to torque the pipe wen makin up a new connectiion
I've been at it for 2 months now on a Service rig. Hardest work I've done so far is Laying down 3 1/2 inch pipe or maybe spinning rods and snapping them by hand. Framing was still harder physically. Everything else has been a cake walk. Even -35 degree weather isn't all that bad. High winds can make things a pain sometimes. Haven't got into drilling rigs yet cause of low oil prices.
I framed custom homes in Phoenix AZ for 11 years and rig work is hard work I just got in the oilfield 3 months ago and when you trip pipe going in or out of the hole 10000 feet is very physically demanding and they yell alot more depending on the crew , good luck
Yeah, Derrick Big Eagle is one of the owners, they are out of Carlisle SK, their rigs are nicely maintained and modern, nice to work on. WE have done allot of coring on their rigs, nice setups they have. I also like the nice yellow rigs, beats Big Sky blue or PD green anytime.
Spiining chains are illegal on drilling rigs now and the ones that still have them will eventually have to take them off. We had one on our rig up to about 2 weeks ago and the safety man for the company we are working for shut our drilling operation down until it was removed.
Near the beginning, what is that collar they throw around the pipe into the hole and what does it do, stop the pipe? Also, what do the tongs do, screw the pipes together?
This is simply just making a connection and what that means is. They are putting another piece of pipe on the pipe already drilled down to drill out some more whole.
@crow0727 Where do the consultants come in? I'm new to this whole oil and gas industry, and have been trying to figure out what a consultant does, and how he gets to his position. Could you fill me in?
I got laid off from sst so its back to framing and I still think framing is a lot easier I cant wait to get back to the oilfield though I was just starting to throw chain and when we stacked out.
Precision still uses kelly rigs... I worked on one last winter. depends on where you are drilling and if the conditions warrant the extra 10 grand a day to pay for the top drive.
hey, in a couple days i start orientation for a leasehand position, does anybody know of anywhere I can find free training materials before that, for floorhands as well, Thanks
@MrEshawnc Yeah, but thats a Kelly Drive, and the guys in this video work for Precision Drilling, the company I work for. Precision doesnt use Kelly Rigs anymore, and to my knowledge, not many companies do. So your "hubby" will be alright! (unless pioneer drilling is like Cyclone Drilling...)
They're not afraid of the labor. They're afraid of looking back and having it not be worth it because corporate didn't pay enough. Often it's more they skimped on safety, protocols, TOOLS, and infrastructure. This all adds up to make a horrible end of life for workers where after they use up all their healthy time. They can't enjoy life afterward because they have so many medical issues. Edit: to add to this. When I first got a job I was a farmhand for 12 hours a day and worked in all sorts of conditions with no complaints. I knew the owner was right there with me in the field dealing with the same stuff I was. It's a whole lot different from the jobs we have today.
Whats drilling like in Canada?? Did it in Wyoming for a short time...Want to get back in but no one here is hiring Fukd up but better then driving semi
to work in Oilfield requires full education,&its very complicated until u start understandin it.Learning is the key, otherwise it can happen accident that costs u life, and environment generally. It depends where u live,in order to learn the subject. In some countries u should take a diplom,in some i think only course, but am sure, its not enough only course. thats some info to u,keep dreamin
@Nopartyforme82 im doing a course for offshore rigs, i have worked on construction sites before working 70 hour weeks but have not done that work for about 2 years because of the economic climate of Ireland, im a fucking hard worker but what would you recommend to toughen myself up for it? i thought join the gym again, any info would be of great use.
casers work harder and longer....people seem to think that ruffnecks work so hard until you actually do it you realize it's not so bad....unloading trucks all night paletizing in some factory is way worse and so is most constructions jobs although it is far more dangerous to be ruffneck
@wd40007 lol aye just know 1 thing tho! when they touch down there the ones with the big new trucks and the new audis so watch UR girl after the job has been done!!!
Well I've done contruction long enough to make $25-$30 per hour anywhere but it won't get much better than that so rigs still pay more. Also I agree it's not so much the work itself that makes the job difficult but who you have to work with or for. I got one Roughneck working with me who will avoid anything difficult and find something easier to do while leaving the harder stuff for someone else to find. It's f***ing annoying and I'm going to tell him so soon enough.
All you need to do is fill out an app and hope they hire you. if you know someone already on a rig then its alot easier. You have to work your way up to drilling.
lol thanks ya my told me wher he was going and im like huh how do i say that lmao ya i wish he would so i could understand more like one time he said domething about it then hes wait a minute an is like oh wait do you know what that is im like uhh no lol but it sucks when i cant talk to him sometimes
@BlueGoose20 im sure you could handle a conection or 2 but these guys work for 12 hours a day away from their families for 20 days at a time and they go back again after all of it! hardly a failure, now go throw on your hi viz vest and collect some stray shopping carts from the parking lot, or whatever it is that you do.
You mean people in this industry really do earn good money for this kind of work? I have done my research online and somehow im still not conviced it just seems too good to be true,,,there must be a catch somewhere.
Want to be a roughneck? Na while ight a rough neck may earn money I'll stay in production with independent producers. Where may jack of all trades master of none give a bit of variety during the work week. I get by moneywise I really never had the need/desire for the latest toys or married a woman that demands she has to have those. Though I gland others like the rough neck work, because my production job depends on them to poke deep hole in the ground.

There hasn't been real rough necks since the spinning chain stop being used
literally the slowest connection ive ever seen...
slowest moving roughnecks ive seen a while but then again its a new breed out here (sighs)
I dont know. They are working on a super single with old ass equipment.
All this negative BS! Lets just all go to the job, get 'er done, and get back home safe. Fast, slow, the only ones who giveashit are the money mongers you are kickin' that dollar up to. Precision Drilling... Rest in Peace Kerry.
the time he sat there was about right for MWD to get a survey pumped up.
Glad someone shares my point of view!
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEK....fast holein! love it!
Looks pretty chill with your crew. I love my service rig tho :)
That was one slow connection.
jesus that was a slow connection! We would have had the kelly spinning before the first tongs bit on this video
these people work hard. They need more respect!
I would say that is a safety issue. I know most drillers don't wait but it all depends on what company you are working for and how much they actually follow safety guide lines. So your memory is not fading none they just trying to make it safer.

i want this job so bad
The mud is used to cool the bit, keep gas from coming back up the whole and to bring cuttings from drilling the whole back. Its also used to help pack off the walls of the whole to.
kinda slow guys but you are the first crew on here to use both sets of tongs to break out and make up the connection so I applaud you for that!

You know you earned your pay when you do this about a hundred times a day.
Been vac hauling clean rig tanks 4 3 years now
i'm glad i'm not paying the redress cost on your rig.
good job guys
good job !!!
I would think there are no "small" accidents on the floor, only major, or deadly.
I framed custom homes in Phoenix AZ for 11 years and rig work is hard work I just got in the oilfield 3 months ago and when you trip pipe going in or out of the hole 10000 feet is very physically demanding and they yell alot more depending on the crew , good luck
Push 'em back, make 'em bite.
getcha some dancemooves

Good job guys but y'all need to put some grease on that rotary table squeaks really bad lol
Can't fucking wait to be back on the patch.
I think if me and my dummy worked that slow we would be fired
Near the beginning, what is that collar they throw around the pipe into the hole and what does it do, stop the pipe? Also, what do the tongs do, screw the pipes together?
Nice.
I work for sst in wyoming and i live in arizona it's a long drive to work but the money is still pretty good. Hopefully things pick up.

Looks like an old Brelco Rig. 500 series.
@kyleosho its all roughnecks chirping other roughnecks on youtube though. everyone's rig is somehpw the best on this site man
at this time of year the oil rigs do slow down down but thats normal its not really dwindling
what do they use the mud for?
wish my tongs weighed 20 pounds...
is that thing a tripple.?
This is simply just making a connection and what that means is. They are putting another piece of pipe on the pipe already drilled down to drill out some more whole.

Spinning chains are not illegal. Some companies don't use them.
@MenoPawhz Could you show me how to do that?
Jealous eh?
spinning chain you mean??
@djtwig999 depends on what you consider a roughneck but at any given time theyres prly between 20-40 people working on a rig
Yeahh Boy i been there i ran a try drive vac truck though ,105,000$ a year working for some one else
tell him him now!! Im just a lousy Lease hand and i already work harder then my roughneck and motorhand after 1 month!!!!
it depends on the size of the pipe and the type of slips. anywhere from 30 well past 100.
hey, in a couple days
i start orientation for a leasehand position, does anybody know of anywhere I can find free training materials before that, for floorhands as well, Thanks
dang thats a pretty quiet rig. diesel-electric im guessing?
@MrEshawnc Yeah, but thats a Kelly Drive, and the guys in this video work for Precision Drilling, the company I work for. Precision doesnt use Kelly Rigs anymore, and to my knowledge, not many companies do. So your "hubby" will be alright! (unless pioneer drilling is like Cyclone Drilling...)
Nothing wrong with manual labor, too many people are afraid of it. Well done guys
They're not afraid of the labor. They're afraid of looking back and having it not be worth it because corporate didn't pay enough.
