haha I'm wearing chinos more than ever too, mostly because I'm enjoying being slightly dressier lately (eg wingtips, sports jackets, loafers) but also because I got some denim shirts. Also I got Merz B Schwanen's chin001 last week and their flappy-but-slightly-tapered cut is making me want to wear them with absolutely everything
Hi Jake, great video and great thanks for this detailed sharing. One interesting thing to note here is that "shinny" fabric the Buzz has utilized in these great chinos. They are shinny mainly because they are using the best-quality cotton (maybe Supima, I am not sure, but definitely cotton with very long fibers). A piece of killer garment!
Jake, I'm so glad you did chinos! I'm currently on the look out, where, how...And you provided all l needed to know. Thanks a bunch. Yes, they are versatile, casual, affordable. The Buzz goes offer a lot more. Looking forward to the straight jeans, t-shirts videos. Nice work and appreciates your transparency above all, it's real
Lovely video! Helped me gain insight after I bought them recently, your video was very helpful as I couldn't find much reviews on the 1942 khaki pair. I am certainly more hopeful for when it comes in the mail soon. Thanks!
I love my Buzz Rickson's absolutely the best chinos I've ever owned. I noticed the fabric is slightly thicker when compared to most modern chinos and I think it gives them an excellent drap. I'm so glad you made this video! I've had the same thoughts.... although I wear jeans and sport coats all the time😂
Yeah they're amazing. Hey to each their own! I'm not saying it can't look good, I'm just getting annoyed at the overhyped that 90s style has been getting these past couple years
Agree on the dress up or dress down limits on the chinos. More versatile than jeans in my opinion also. Especially when abroad on holidays in Europe, I can pack a chinos and get to use them casual during the day and more formal (ish) in the evening for dinners. Whereas I’d need jeans and chinos normally
how do you compare chinos vs fatigue pant? I love fatigue pants because they are completely pocket bag less, and usually come with side adjuster tab, and the front patch pocket adds just enough detail to make it look different than common trousers
I've only recently woken up to just how much cheaper things can be if you buy direct from Japan. It doesn't always apply (and I'd hate to turn folk away from really great retailers like Redcast, who also have great prices) but I was looking at a pair of Sugar Cane's 1966 repros and the difference between Hinoya and the only UK retailer I know who carries them was insane. By the way, that green wool jacket with the plaid front is an absolute peach - can you tell me what it is? Thanks for a great vid!
How do the rises between the gibson version and the regular khaki/beige versions of the 1942 compare? Hinoya's size charts say that the front rise of a w33 1942 in khaki is 33.5cm and for the gibson version it is 36.5cm (a little over an inch higher). Is this true with your pairs? I got the w32 in the 1945 a couple months ago and they fit fantastic. Since I'm 6'0", 190lbs, the 1945 fits me like the 1942 fits you. I think the w33 in the khaki 1942 would fit me well for a looser look with ample room (but not too much) in the crotch due to the high rise. I also want the black version, but not if the rise is 14.5 inches. I love high rise pants, but 14.5 inches is crazy high of a rise. I'm trying to achieve the look of the J.Crew Giant Fit Chino, but not look like I'm wearing hand-me-downs I haven't grown into.
I also think its seasonal. I love jeans in the winter but they suck in the summer. Chinos are good year round. They are more comfy than jeans (Even the new stretchy ones)
Scott Fraser Collection has a great selection of all those fabrics and they have several different pleated models. I have 2 pairs myself and like them a lot
thanks for the info! I also have decent quads so finding wide pants is always a win. Any jeans you would recommend that fit similarly on muscular builds?
I have a pair of EG Workaday khakis that I purchased 11(!) years ago from the Bureau Belfast that have a similar cut. It's harder to find Workaday now but it appears that Nepenthes has a similar pant for sale. Unfortunately EG's attempt to be trendy (elasticized waists), incorporation of cheaper material like ripstop, and overall lower quality may make them less desirable.
Not at all, but mine are probably an inch or 1.5" loose on me so they wouldn't stretch much. It's a dense weave though so I wouldn't expect a lot of stretch in any situation
Can you do a video on how to wear black? I have been very averse to wearing black for many years (always worn brown boots, that kind of thing) but Ive been becoming more interested in incorporating it into my wardrobe. I know “black goes with everything” but I would love if you did a deep dive in what to wear with it
I used to wear a lot of beige chinos when I was younger. They are very versatile. Nowadays its slacks and corduroy exclusively. Just as versatile for me and looks a lot sharper. I also think they're more comfortable. Though I recently bought a pair of jeans again, but they are cut like slacks.
I think the 45's are better,a little bit slimmer. Warehouse has some decent ones if you can catch them on sale. I would like a pair of the buzz deck pants in hbt green. I don't like herringbone twill too much but i might have to make an exception. The oni british twills are nice too.
I'd also suggest Bielby's if you like that look. Yeah the 45 snd 42 differences are minor. I prefer the 42, but they're both wide enough so I totally understand preferring the 45 model
OMG these cost 200 euros in Europe! I need to buy them again because I got the wrong size and had to send the pants back to the shop. I'll grab a pair at a store when I can. in the meantime, I got a pair from a French brand, 1942 fit as well.
I got intrigued by the 90's sport coat denim phenomenon you spoke of. After some research i do see what you mean E.g. Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld but I also saw some examples of it looking pretty fire; the jury is still out for me. Also, I think the real battle is chinos/trousers against sweatpants/athleisure wear, hopefully the youth wake up.
There are plenty of military reproduction companies that make the same thing for a fraction of the cost. At the front, what price glory and soldiers of fortune make something very similar for a fraction of the cost. I buy the what price glory white chino's and dye them with dylon dye in the machine. The soldiers of fortune summer chino's are very good for anyone in the UK, they are £38! I actually prefer them to the Buzz Rickson's I have had. Cotton is a very cheap material so I never pay big money for basic cotton trousers.
I really like chinos myself. I am considering buying a pair of tellason chinos. I recently bought some selvage jeans that I can't get enough of. But I like chinos so much and I think its because I wore so many dickies as a kid. And my grandfather always wore chinos and work pants. Great video.
@@johnhickman2033 Not sure, Bro. Chinos are worn around the world. certain places in the Middle East and Africa wear their own traditional non-western attire though.
Hahaha I find this take sooo controversial but it’s because I love denim so much more 😂😂. Tan chinos are unreal though and go great with a denim shirt or denim jacket 🤣
@@almostvintagestyle what would you say is a good price window for something like a chino and how heavy would you go with the fabric. i wanted something a little heavier but in that sort of colour
Chinos are ok (especially in the slightly higher rise, officer style you are wearing), but for me, denim jeans are the OG. They are the most culturally relevant piece of clothing of the last 100 years for a reason. There is something inherently badass about the 5 pocket layout, and nothing is more beautiful than the faded glory of indigo dye meeting long wearing times, and specific habits of each person.

Glad to hear it! Hope they fit well!
Wore the black version today. I definitely dress a lot more casual but they're pretty classic so they work with most styles.
Yeah they're definitely quite versatile

how do you compare chinos vs fatigue pant? I love fatigue pants because they are completely pocket bag less, and usually come with side adjuster tab, and the front patch pocket adds just enough detail to make it look different than common trousers

Yes it makes a massive difference to buy direct from Japan. That one is a 1940 Sportclad wool jacket
I love chinos too! The rise is perfect plus they go with everything!
Agreed! The high rise makes a big difference

Thanks for breaking down the styles💯 Great video!
Rickson and Mcoys are fantastic chinos! Great review!
Yes both great. McCoys doesnt seem to offer as wide of a cut though
Who do you recommend for trousers, linen and wool pleated style trousers. Cheers
Scott Fraser Collection has a great selection of all those fabrics and they have several different pleated models. I have 2 pairs myself and like them a lot
You can wear them in the winter with a pair of merino wool or silk long-johns - no problem!
Can you tell me about what you're wearing in the video? It looks great! The hat, shirt, belt, and pants.
The chinos are what I'm reviewing, the hat is from Wellema, shirt from Freewheelers, and belt from Duke Mantee
do the black chinos look less shiny and more black in person? the photographs make them look very reflective (great photos by the way!!)
They still look quite shiny in person unfortunately. It went away on my first pair of chinos, but it takes a while
thanks for the info! I also have decent quads so finding wide pants is always a win. Any jeans you would recommend that fit similarly on muscular builds?
Not a lot, sadly. Going for denim military trousers is a good bet though
I would love to try a pair, you and David (The Vintage Future) both seem to love them. I would prefer to try them on first if possible though.
You csn try them on at self edge if you're in the USA

Ah that's a shame. At least you still have a good older pair!
Great review! I own the 1942 and 1945 and I personally prefer the 1945 in Beige. But both are excellent
How much did the waist stretch after you broke these in?
Not at all, but mine are probably an inch or 1.5" loose on me so they wouldn't stretch much. It's a dense weave though so I wouldn't expect a lot of stretch in any situation

90s style was awful, but we said that about the 60s, 70s, 80s too. But at least those decades were coherent.
Yeah there is awful style in every decade in fairness.
