    I fished this spillway mid-late 90s. I didn't catch anything but I also didn't know what I was doing to fish spillways, rivers walleye! 🤷 Of course Asian carp was not an issue back then. I did see a couple guys catch walleye and one I remember was big, over 24". And a guy caught a musky 50 some inches long. Was an interesting fishing trip. Always meant to go back but never did. Now I live in Indiana. Might make it back and able to get out there for a fishing trip.

    Fished the dam several times ... both sides ... the closer to the dam the better...had a musky hooked but he spit it out #3 mepps ... the kid next to me pulled out 5 decent musky in about 3 hours... caught walleye , white bass, crappie catfish...the kid was throwing a paddle tail at the wall directly across from where you were fishing...I also pulled an 8 year old little girl out of the water right before she went completely under ... the dam was flowing super heavy...

    Was there today (drove an hour to get there). A few bites (a couple right by where you were fishing here) but no catches. Well, I snagged a shad. Lost a couple of lures. The water was pouring through the gates and it was really windy, so it was tough fishing. Saw a walleye, gar, and a couple of big catfish caught, though. I've had luck there before, but it's pretty hit or miss for me. Saw some pelicans, eagles, and kingfishers, and it was sunny, so not a bad day. Still wish I'd had something to show for the drive, though :D

    Medium sized onion lop the ends... skin it til clean & put it in the oil before frying fish.
    This keeps the oil from burnin' as the onion absorbs the too hot burn. It'll blacken but the oil wont burn or the fish.

    I've fished that spillway (it has been 15 years at least) and there weren't any Asian carp at that time, but they weren't really anywhere back then..I had very little luck there but I know now a lot that I didn't know then. There were great numbers of white bass when I was there, caught on a small blade bait, and I caught smallmouth Buffalo as well. And the walleye is a great fish to eat, hope that it's a good experience for you.

    Try breading it with frying magic or Andy’s yellow side by side sometime for any freshwater fish. I prefer it over batter typical. I mix 50/50 egg yolk and milk and dip it in that before rolling it in the breading and dropping it in 350 oil to golden brown. 10/10

    Cool video, sweet spillway. I find your approach to these spillways super interesting, just straight up saying where you are at is something different for sure.
    Also with the musky thing, it’s better to just run a leader. The musky don’t care, they will bite through braid probably easier than flouro tbh.

    • @EngineeringHooksets
      @EngineeringHooksets  Рік тому +1

      This spot is super well known and busy, I don't think I'm adding any pressure by saying the name. Also yeah musky were kind of an afterthought. I just figured a walleye wouldn't mind the difference between 15lb braid and 50lb braid so might as well use 50 in the small chance I got a musky to bite. Thanks for watching, man!

    I enjoyed your video. Only one comment. A fisherman should always know the size/ slot limits on and type of Pike/Muskie, Walleye/ Sauger/ or Bass BEFORE fishing a body of water. Making a fish you might possibly have to release staying out of water is actually against the law. You are supposed to measure the fish, take a quick pic if you want, then immediately release any undersized, or in slot limit fish. I can’t tell you how many You Tube content creators with fishing shows have to dig out the measuring board or tape measure, THEN look for the scale, all on a fish they are going to release. We can, and should do better!

    Take the front treble off of that crankbait, and drastically reduce your chance of snagging up.
    I don't feel like it reduces my hookup rate when river fishing at all.
    That front treble is trouble.

    • @EngineeringHooksets
      @EngineeringHooksets  Рік тому

      You mean on the blade bait? I catch probably 2/3 of my crankbait fish on the front treble. Predator fish inhale bait head first when possible so I think it makes sense. If anything I would swap the front treble for a double hook with the points facing up.
