I've been fishing a 180 acre community lake in KS, on and off, for about 6 years. One evening while Bass fishing I caught around 5 nice Wiper's on a spinner. Haven't caught any since. Just a fluke they were in a shallow cove where I was fishing.
@@mikebaumeister5690 what do you recommend for bait or lure if you don’t mind me asking?! I was just there last Saturday. Only caught 1 walleye. Slow bite. But two weeks prior when I went down the cats where hitting hard and I also got 1 saugeye.
@@77Datsun280z The 2 rigs that I use for wipers are a night crawler under a slip bobber and a 3/8 ounce jig head with a Berkeley gulp minnow. I haven’t had any luck there with walleyes or cats unfortunately. I just cast as close to the gate as possible when the wipers are chasing the baitfish.
@@mikebaumeister5690 sweet, thanks! I’ve give you a tip for catching walleye, sauger, saugeyes. I typically use a 3/8 or 1/2 jig head with a spinner. Now I will either use a 4inch Mr. Twister twister tail, and the color is called motor oil (green with red flake) OR I will use a 2.8 or 4inch Keitech fat swing impact, yellow/green chartreuse or clear chartreuse with blue flake on those jig heads. You will catch them on those, but I typically fish down past the wall of the dam. Last year I caught a 5.2lb walleye less than 15ft from the shoreline using a twister tail.
Man that last one was a heart breaker and then you fall in LOL. Your caught some studs Bro great job. Love when the water runs over shallow concrete and drops off. I do it for the ad revenue. LOL
That is such a nice looking spot!! Starting out with a beauty 💪🏻. That’s really something all being 20 1/4”. I’ve been dying to fish walleye here but river has been to high. 5 more cast….no 10 more cast 🤣. That sucks losing the one that was ripping drag. Man down man down!!! You took it like a champ👊. Great video brother!!!
Nice! Definitely say whats up if you see me out there. I've actually spoken to a couple other people there who told me they caught bass but no saugeye as well. I wonder if I'm just getting lucky tbh, but its likely that its because Im staying till after dark ever time. Thank you for the comment!
It actually decreases distance but it adds casting speed + accuracy. In a small spot like this there is no need to chuck the bait super far so this method is generally superior. I'm gonna be making a full video on this casting method/flipping with a spinning setup very soon. Thanks for the comment! Nice profile pic btw, I used to play a lot of fallout
I had zero luck on twister tails for the past 5-6 years. I almost exclusively threw flies in the meantime. Last fall, I started using a chartreuse moxi from BFIshN tackle and caught the most walleye and sauger that I’ve ever have 🤷♂️
The part in the middle that you were standing on is there to cuase a break in the water incase something were to fall in and they would have to retreive it or to slow the water down if it floods out. It might also be an old dam gate that they tore down
When the army corps of engineers build those types of dams, they realize that fish will hold below spillways and that concrete divide allows for a deep wintering hole..
Awesome video. That is an interesting looking spillway. Shitty fact: in Washington state you aren't allowed to fish within 400 feet of any spillway. Those walleye were beauties. 👍
@@EngineeringHooksets I am pretty sure the wildlife people don't want anyone catching fish period. So, they dream up rules. Also, I am told (haven't verified) that the governor appointed tree huggers to head the department.
All old neson north on the kaskaskia river there's a spring waleye and white bass run if you fish the other spillway you need to wade theres a rock bar you can stand on and only fish there if some water coming over the dam the lakes good for and cat fish on shrimp
Nice fishing man! Thank you for catching and releasing. If everyone did that, we’d catch walleye/saugeye every outing. HMU if you ever want to go fishing, I’m over near Champaign.
@@EngineeringHooksets how much money for the spot? I promise not to tell anyone. I have been skunked more times than I can count this year and I just want to catch a fish
@Michael G I dont think you want to buy it lol. Notice how I didn't post any videos here this year? That's because I went there 7 times from early March to late April in 2023. Skunked every single time. Not 1 fish caught in 7 trips here. Sometimes for whatever reason, some rivers just have a great year, and that's what 2022 was for this place.
I think that's just because it was dark out so I turned the shading on the footage up. I took a better picture on my phone and you can see marks on the dorsal fin.
For the love of god get a landing net and start using it to land, remove hooks, measure and release. There's literally no reason to not fish responsibly by respecting the resource

Awesome! Nice area!. One of my go to places for nice walleye is the spill way in New Cumberland WV. The Ohio River always has nice fish to be caught.
Thank you for the comment! I've never fished in WV but I know it's got some beautiful spots
I fish the spillway in New Cumberland too and the wipers go crazy there

Follow the river up to the next spillway it has has waleye and crappie

It already has haha. Thanks for the comment, man!
I never throw keeper size waleye and Sageye back they are the best eating fish ever too swim
i think its a walleye
It definitely looks more like a walleye but I have a picture on my Instagram which clearly shows long splotches on the dorsal fin so its a saugeye.

What?
Engineering includes stringing rods
If maybe you would slow yourself down on your retrieve you wouldn't snag so often.
Less talk more work catches more fish and followers.
