Lake Como is stunning! It was recently voted the most beautiful lake in Europe, and lake Garda came in second place. High recommend visits to both of them.
It takes me back to working in the travel industry, selling holidays from the 'lakes and mountains' brochures. Ingrams, Crystal etc...You brought the place to life! Beautiful!
Unfortunately the sky wasn't quite as blue as what appears in the brochures, but it's definitely the sort of place that forces you to slow down and relax.
Went to Como from Milan, beautiful place. We went on the lake boat trip, in March, stayed on the open top deck when everyone was undercover. I'm Scottish I can cope, "it's not really that cold" - The cough I started off with progressed to pneumonia, off work for 2 months. 14 years later I still don't feel I've fully recovered. Would love to go again, but I wouldn't be so foolish next time.
I just clicked on a video for Lake Como because I want to go there. It's perfect, I'm staying next to the Cadorna station. Glad to see the train goes straight to Lake Como.
I can recommend taking the boat from Como to either Menaggio or Bellagio and taking the bus back. Particularly the bus ride is one which you will not forget easily. And if you have time you can visit some of the small towns or villages en route. Some great local markets (there's a folder about these at the Como tourist centre).
Spent a few days in Milan in Sept two years ago before heading to Como (seriously warm during the daytime and spectacular thunderstorms at night) to celebrate our anniversary - the 5 days in and around Como were quite incredible (accommodation was over €1k per night for 5-star, but worth it given the occasion) it's a beautiful area and the people fabulous. I look forward to your return trip.
Hello, next time you come here to Lake Como, come from Milano Centrale to Varenna, the central lake area Varenna-Menaggio-Bellagio is the most famous and popular. You can take a ferry ride around the lake and get off anywhere to explore... spring or autumn is best, summer very busy!
Did that a few years ago. Stayed a couple of nights there in Varenna, and used a day pass on the ferries. Such a beautiful place. The station was on the hillside, a little steep on the road back up, but not too difficult.
Of course, Trenord is the company, from Milano Centrale through Lecco to Varenna, although the train will go on to Sondrio and Tirano, so that is what you want to look for on the board ..
Hello , Thanks for ur helpful comment ..I was planing to do so when I reach there & I found an offer from trenord train company on there website for round trip from Milan to varena + open day ferry tickets ..my concern is that would I be able to get back to Milan from como not from Varena ? I wanted to do so in order to get the chance to see all in one day Varena- bellagio then como ..I was trying to contact Trenord company but couldn’t find a way to do it online
In Northern Italy the Tennants they serve is Tennants super (yes, that one) in 1/2 pints, it is deemed as a dark beer there and very popular especially in Milan in the suburbs.
We love the Italian Swiss canton of Ticino on the otherside of the border with Locarno and Lugano. Both of which have great boat trips on lakes. If I remember correctly TILO is a joint Swiss / Italian company linking TIcino and LOmbardia hence the name. It is a regional service between Milano and Bellinzona.
last year i did the Bergamo thing (after steve marsh's video) and like you i did the lake Como trip too ( i took the other train to Lecco) it is stunning, and surprisingly easy to get to.
Looks absolutely beautiful, can see why so many celebs buy a home in the area. Your ability to smell rain is because you can smell petirchor, I can smell it too.
Reminds me of my youth, went on a bike tour of the Italian Lakes, Venice and then down to Bologna. Took the train from Victoria, disembarked at Como to start the bike tour.
I did this jounrney a few years back. Part of a special holiday. Bergamo - Milan- Lake Como- Milan - Venice. This video brings back special memories. Thankyou. 😊
Better to train from Milan C.LE to Varenna Escino. You end up in the middle of the Lake Como region and can take a all day ferry pass btwn Varenna, Menaggio and Bellagio. Menaggio is the most peaceful imho
The three Milan's rlwy stations for lakes resorts (lakes Maggiore, Lugano, Como and Garda, this one the farest, are connected by metro line 2 (green one): Milano Nord Cadorna for Como Lago and Laveno, Milano Garibaldi for Arona, Stresa, Laveno, Luino (lake Maggiore) and Porto Ceresio (lake Lugano), Milano Centrale for lake Maggiore (Arona, Stresa) Como San Giovanni, Lecco, Varenna.
Como Lago is the best route...Starts Cadorna Station in Milan - Double decker trains too...Como Lago at the waters edge... The main station in Como is a lengthy walk away. Milan Centrale is so beautiful though.
Scott next time you visit Sutton head out to Howth to McNeills pub all pints are €5.00 on a Friday night from 5-8 pm and after that only €5.90. The food is also excellent there and you can have a special from Monday to Thursday of seafood chowder with homemade brown bread and a quarter pounder with chips for only €22. You can also get the 101 bus to the Airport for only €3 from Sutton dart station which is the next one down from Howth you were at Sutton dart station when you visited Burrow beach
I went from Milan to Varenna on the RE8. Lovely views of lake como and the amazing grounds and gardens of Vila Monastero. Slightly longer train ride but the views along the way are magnificent
I've been there but I don't remember it! About 25 years ago. Italy is so beautiful. I tried to learn the language as my daughter is half Italian but I don't remember any of that either! Enjoyable video Scott, thanks.
Been there a few times, for some reason I’ve found Scottish beers in a lot of bars in Northern Italy, even in remote non touristy villages. I’ve only ever been in the winter time, each time it’s been cold, grey and wet, yet I loved it
About that Tilo/Trenord confusion: TiLo is the operator of regional trains in Ticino and between Ticino and Lombardy, and is a joint venture between Trenord and SBB. The TiLo RE80 between Milano Centrale and Locarno is the fastest train between Milan and Como (even slightly faster than the EC) and is a perfectly normal regional train, also when it comes to tickets. Trains to Como Lago are a bit slower, just like the S11 from Garibaldi, but are super convenient to/from central Milan, as Milano Cadorna is located just next to the Sforza Castle. Anyway, to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake you better take the RE to Sondrio/Tirano and get off at Varenna (just 1h from Milan) and eventually get a ferry to Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, etc.
Great video, we did the same trip the Tuesday after Easter, weather was beautiful, but “platform roulette” is what we experienced too on the way back to Milan!!!
In order to get to Como to the Como Nord Lago you need to depart from a third station, Cadorna (which is the most central, being just 10 minutes on foot from the Duomo). Also, from the west end of the lake front, there is the funicular to Brunate, a village just above Como. Next time check it out. FInally, TILO isn't a local operatior, it's a joint venture between the Italian and the Swiss operators.
The only downside of Como San Giovanni is that is much farther from the lakeside than Como Lago station which is served by trains from Cadorna station in Milan. As for the funicular I did take it up to Brunate a few times and believe me it is a lovely spot and food is better than in Como
Beautiful Como! If you ever come back...Brunatte, through the funicular is really worth it, plenty of places to walk and find breathtaking views of the lake, is a half day ride, and if you like to navigate the lake, I suggest stops at Bellagio and Varenna, this navigation takes you the whole day, but is really worth it too.
Just Gorgeous (apart from MuckDonalds)! Living a hundred miles away, I was forever being asked directions in Melbourne in years past. Same thing happened in London, Oslo and Bergen..!
If you ever go back to Bergamo, you should think about getting a train to Brescia and visit the castle, its location is like Edinburgh castle, on a hill, and its a stunning place too, used to be an zoo at some point too, and if you feel even more adventurous, on the same trip take a train from Brescia to Lake Iseo, where you can get a small 10 min boat trip over to Monte Isola island, it rivals lake Como. A Plane, a train and a boat all in 1 day, perfect for you scott 😀
I went to Como, one of the first stops when I did American Music Abroad back in 2016. We mostly had lunch and stuff on the lake. 13:02 seems fairly familiar, I'll have to go back through my hard drives and try and potentially narrow where I had a pizza-and I scarfed that whole thing solo

Like a few others I would recommend the regional train to Sondrio/Tirano and get off at Varenna, which has cutesy back streets, a lovely ruined fort on the hill, and ferries to Bellagio and elsewhere. That’s where all the tourists were instead of Como! Or carry on the same train to Valtellina, which is a gorgeous valley close to the Swiss border, and ending up in Tirano for the connection to St Moritz and the Bernina Express. Book the Bernina train in advance if you want a scenic carriage. Or just go down to the bottom of Lake Como, to Colico, where there are far fewer international tourists so the atmosphere is much more Italian. I can feel approaching rain too - it’s the sudden drop in air pressure and less birdsong.
They are beautiful, but I feel Iseo is a better choice for tourists with public transport. You can easily reach all the major village on the east coast of lake Iseo with a train from Brescia. Idro, on the other hand, it's a two and a half hours bus ride from Brescia, on a line with only 6 runs a day.
This was great Scott. A real trip down memory lane as I lived about 10 mins away from the Stazione Centrale when I lived in Milan and we would often catch the train to Como. I also remember taking my parents when they were over for a holiday from the UK as they adored it. Try to come back in May or September. It's way too busy and hot in the summer.

The Moto Guzzi factory is the oldest continuously operating motorcycle builder in Europe. It is located at Madello del Lario on the shore of Lake Como. Might be interesting to take a tour if possible.
Hi, a couple of corrections. You don't need to take the expensive eurocity train. with the regional one, the TiLO, that takes the same time, the ticket is 5€ one way. Trains from Garibaldi are the slowest, and they are also often very old. More importantly, there is a direct train from Milan to Como Lago, it departs from Milano Cadorna station, which is exactly where the Sforza Castle and Park Sempione are. It's very much in the city centre, actually more central than Milano Centrale, and it's very close also to where the duomo is. Be careful because from Milan Cadorna station to Como Lago station there are at least two direct trains every hour throughout the day. From the center of Milan to the center of Como along the lakeside and takes one hour at a regional rate.
Loved the video, & your humour. How far was the station from the lake & what was the coffee like? Thanks from NZ. thinking of going to lake como April or May next year.

I’ve really enjoyed this one Scott (not that I don’t enjoy em all) 😁What a lovely trip to make and how magnificent was Como!!Thanks for keeping us laughing too ‘I think I’ll follow that man’… hilarious 😂sending best wishes Clive
love the videos mate
Be careful because from Milan Cadorna station to Como Lago station there are at least two direct trains every hour throughout the day. From the center of Milan to the center of Como along the lakeside and takes one hour at a regional rate.
I think I'd need to allow for extra time just to stare at the details at Milano Centrale. (Not to mention all the stuff at Como.)
Thank you!!! :) Your video is helping me plan my trip!!!
Loved the video, & your humour. How far was the station from the lake & what was the coffee like? Thanks from NZ. thinking of going to lake como April or May next year.
