  • Alan learns about the life and legacy of Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry, who transformed both the gardens at her home Mount Stewart and the political landscape for women in the early twentieth century. Oz Clarke goes behind the scenes of the famous Mediterranean-style garden Edith created, while Alison Hammond visits Cliveden House in Berkshire to find out more about former resident and first female MP to sit in the House of Commons, Nancy Astor.

I'm an American who has loved reading re-searching etc British history. And I mean The History not necessarily The Monarchy. But you cannot make this stuff up. I learn something new EVERY day. I started by reading Historical Biographies. So you're reading about someone but you're also picking up the history without reading a History Book so dry!! One thing leads to another and the documentaries like this can be so informative. I usually read everything and watch everything on a subject when I am interested. Love Britain.

@17:10 "Property owning women over 30 got the vote" -- essentially, white women with wealth who were at an age where they were already married could vote. This is barely feminism. It still held to classist, racist, sexist and ageist views about what women were capable of. And the fact that they had to be 30 to vote was a way of ensuring they were under the thumb of their husband before they could exercise their right to vote.

The house is beautiful no doubt.
Considering the housing crisis and immigration crisis set the United Kingdom is suffering right now it's amazing they spent 8 million pounds on a big house nobody's living in.

🌎 My Perspective: Northern Ireland will always be Ireland, it isn't Britain. The control of lands that were a Country before British aggressions does not change History nor Geography.
(Regardless of Rome or Britain's Historic efforts to rewrite History), in the present era abundant facts are emerging to reveal the greater Truths of our World and its Peoples and Countries' Histories.
