your simple answer was that the several gaskets could be replaced or repaired with sealant. And it started right up after you verified ann the small holes were cleared and airtight gaskets may be the fix. It is usually 'something simple or stupid' as my workmate used to say about mainframe computer problems that popped up. It could be the same thing here
I repair all mower brands for dried out carb gaskets on mowers by using and spreading grease on them for reassembly to get a seal. I do this only on dried out leaking gaskets not cracked on torn. Those are replaced
There is one of these in the junk pile at work. I crushed 10 other mowers yesterday but for some reason I can't bring myself to do it to that one. Possibly aquisition in progress....
I've had a few where there didn't seem to be much noticeable kickback. I'm just saying that I would have checked that first, not thinking it could be gaskets
The carb can be removed without unscrewing the Studs. There are 2 bolts holding on the throttle mechanism, remove those, and the linkage will be loose enough to undo, and carb will come off.
@@MrJeepsterman I wouldn't call it special but it does require a specific spark plug. Call a local lawn and garden place and tell them what you have. They will tell you what plug it requires and if they have one.
I hoped you might help me. I have the same mower, just bought it since I miss my old one. It's in very good condition with very little wear, stored about 3 or 4 years according to previous owner with no gas in it. The carb looks brand new inside, but the mower at first almost felt siezed. I pulled the plug, sprayed some wd40 and was able to get a few cycles before it binds up again. It does have spark, clean fuel and the primer works. You just can't physically turn the motor fast enough to potentially start it. Its not the pull cord assembly itself as it does it with a manual cord wrapped around, but if you spin the blades, it cycles without any issue except normal compression. It's almost like when you pull the cord it has way too much compression so much so that you can't turn it over. Any suggestions? I much appreciate your knowledge on these fine engines.
I appreciate your description of the issue, it was very well explained. Can you do me a favor and remove the top engine cover? I want to make sure the flywheel brake isn't still engaged when you squeeze the brake handle. If the brake is still engaged, it would extremely difficult to pull the rope.
@@HomeGaragechannel wanna know what I did? I'm almost too embarrassed to admit, but maybe someone can learn from my mistake...my last 2 stroke was a non commercial model with the blade clutch....I didn't have to hold the kill bar to start...I spent a hour at the sellers home dinkering around and didn't realize till I got home what I had done. If the bar is not squeezed, it will do everything I explained. Once you follow basic operating instructions, it starts first pull after sitting for 3 years. I'll post a quick short to show you if you are interested. It's exceptionally nice cleaned up, I'd guess around 100 hours. Cream puff, runs great, needs nothing. Great video.....I was wondering if you or your viewers had any thoughts on what could be causing my 97' toro super recycler to leak oil on the front deck. It has a Briggs and Stratton 6.5GTS. Starts and runs good, But leaks pretty bad after an hour of mowing. Appreciate the help. I will be watching more of your content!
thanks I appreciate that. As far as the leak, have you tried cleaning that area, then see where the leak might be originating from? My guess would be the Sump gasket, where the sump bolts up to the block. Another location is the plate that covers the valve springs. It has a gasket there too that can leak towards the front. The plate can be seen once you take off the muffler.
Hi I have one exactly same with your , I clean up carb, new spark plug But too hard get starting up Sometime it ran ...... Maybe the swing arm oil seal is leaking? And if replacement, I don't know what size for that And where I can Buy it Do you have video for that problem on you tube ? thanks

I was right with you but would probably have pulled the blower housing to check for rats and rust on the mag. I hardly run into a bad plug but it's not impossible. Thanks and BLESSINGS!
I read thru the comments and didnt see anything so take a look. Alot of the lawn guys use the cheap two stroke oil in gallon jugs. The carbon from this oil will literally fill in the exhaust port. Every few years, pull the muffler and knock the carbon out with a popcycle stick, blow the dust out with your air line. Good for another few years. Running these at 32:1 seems to be better than 50:1.
Hi I have a important question. So I have a lawnboy duraforce and whenever I let go of the top handle to shut off the engine it screeches really loud unless I slowly release the handle bar. This means the flywheel break is worn. But is there any way to fix that. Like can that part be replaced, can WD40 fix it, and where even is it located
I just picked up an engine for my 22043 commercial 21 model. Very similar to this one. Mines been sitting for about 6 years. I noticed the bottom of it is disassembled. I think I have all the parts, but the blade brake doesn’t look right. Also, the transmission is now stuck in 3rd. Wish me luck!
That was scarey, I thought such a great machine wouldn’t start after all that. I wonder why it didn’t start in the beginning even though it had compression, spark, and fuel.
I had I a really nice curb side craftsman mower, was mowing 2 days ago and motor locked up because they never cut the oil ports in the mains from factory..so I stripped and separated all the parts and brought it in my to scrap pile..too bad I really liked it ..should of fixed it but I saved alot of good parts..i find about 6 of them a year
wow I've never seen that before. I will be getting a craftsman in soon and I'll have to take it apart and see if its the same problem. Thanks for the comment.
If the rest of the mower is ok, then a Briggs Quantum engine (or vice versa with Tecumseh) from that era will often bolt on and use the same adapter with blade.
@@999thenewman it's in good shape ,but there so common in my area out to the curb ,I just scrap them and keep the good parts off them ..took a truck load of old motors in last week and got 15 cents a pound of irony aluminum..made 150$ . They just don't make them to last..less you build your own ..or go through them like I shoulda
That compression tester you linked is that the one you use? Will it work on mowers, and various different small engines like leaf blowers, trimmers, and snow throwers?
it's the new one that I bought earlier this year, however I dropped and it's off now so I had to buy another one. Yes it will work on most small equipment except the one's that use the small spark plugs.
So the fuel valve is open at the bottom of the tank? It could also be your gas cap. Next time you start it try cracking the gas cap. The air vent might not be working.
does the compression test have anything to do with these possible air leaks thru the gaskets? ie if compression is that high cant we assume its not these gasket air leaks? or are these not related?
Thanks for the comment . The compression test is testing the top end of the cylinder and not the gaskets outside of the engine. Leaking gaskets on the intake wouldn't effect it.
Does that style of deck mulch good and do you think those 2 cycle suzuki engines are any good? I’m looking at an older one on offer up right now. Im thinking about buying it.
I be honest, if it had a mulching blade, it will be just okay as a mulched. The reason is that I feel that deck was meant to work best as a catcher. I would get a super recycler, with Suzuki, if you can find one. otherwise a kawaski will do.
should see the old 1930s briggs roto tiller I found in my shed when I bought the house. I brought it back to life and its a monster. minus the busted wheels
I went through this whole ordeal on my personal pace and found the cord on the left of the handle was off. Put it back on and voila, it started. Now I have a new corroborator. Came with all new gaskets and it was cheap enough to just replace it.
Me again. I took the Carburetor off and the studs are stuck in the block. Got one out and am terrified of snapping off the other stud. Carburetor is off and the jet from the top doesn't have the hole through it from the bottom. Looks sealed over. Don't know if there is supposed to be a hole at the top of that jet? Mine closed off on both ends. The Mower will not idle smooth at all.
@@HomeGaragechannel OK, so the idle jet has no hole. Was manufactured wrong. I spoke to the original owner and he said the Engine never idled when new and the Dealer "said it was normal". My carburetor has a stripped end on the emulsion tube and corrosion. Welded in I bought a new carburetor $$$ and then bought a new Idle jet specified for the 5.5 HP. The main jet I couldn't find. The Main jet the new Carb came with is a 72.5. Toro tells me it should be a #75. The old Carburetor has no number on the Main jet. Do you know if a #72.5 would run a richer mixture than a #75? I had a Lawn Boy for years (30) and it leaned out and the engine seized. When I tore it down, the main jet was mostly plugged and She starved for fuel and oil. I'm trying the Suzuki at 40:1. Using Echo 2-cycle oil. Maybe something is better for lube? Thanks a million for your great instructional video. I just need to find out if the 72.5 Main Jet would run on the Rich side instead of the lean side. My mower also has the while corrosion around the Chute.
actually it's not the same mower. one has paint missing the other doesn't and yes I do work on them both quite a bit as the owner is pretty bad at taking care of them.
I had a question, I have a toro turfmaster that has the fj180v engine. It’s only a year old but when I turn it off after using for awhile it does not want to start, after quite a bit of pulls it will kinda sputter on then go to normal. What do you think?
what I would do, would be to run, let it get hot, and then shut it off. Then try and start it, and if it does it again, I would remove the air filter and then squirt some fuel into the carbs, throat. If It starts immediately ,then it's a carb issue, But if it's still hard to start, then you could have a spark plug issue, or the valve lash is off and needs to be adjusted.
@@stickytarmacs i would look into rebuilding it but of that's too much money for an old machine or not your cup of tea then put it on the curb so someone can use it for parts.
@@HomeGaragechannel yes I got them super cheap one was home owner used so.it in good shape the one im rebuilding Is pretty rough all I really need is rings and upper and lower seals right?
First thing you should have done take plug out check for spark, put some fuel directly into cylinder put plug back in and tried it. When you have a weak spark it can be due to flywheel having rust on it, fixed a few motors with this problem.
@@HomeGaragechannel Your welcome, by the way flywheels are Aluminum so its only the little magnet in the flywheel that rusts and needs to be sanded clean, sometimes the ignition coil can also rust on the two contact points take it off and also clean from rust, best way to get perfect gap when installing the coil is by using some Corn flakes cardboard or similar as shim.
Do you happen to know how it Locked up? Was it running and locked up or has it always been Locked up since you've had it? I would spray some WD40 or some sort thing oil into the cylinder and let it set.
@@HomeGaragechannel It was a used mower and was gonna happen sometime anyway. I haven't used it in a while because it was starting to smoke a lot. I'll look into it tomorrow, Thanks for the Suggestion!

Great job 👍 my old Toro 2 cycle Suzuki can be really finicky with spark plugs. I pretty much have to replace it every season or it's really hard to start.
yes it's either your brake cable, kill switch or the ignition coil. Remove the top cover and make sure the kill switch is clearing the kill switch when you close the brake cable.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yes I unhooked the coil groung And I'm not getting any continuity between the coil and plug wire. So I'm thinking that plug wire is bad and directly hooked to coil

If you can remove the choke and the governor linkage then you don't have to remove the studs.
The carb can be removed without unscrewing the Studs. There are 2 bolts holding on the throttle mechanism, remove those, and the linkage will be loose enough to undo, and carb will come off.
Thanks for the video. Just picked one up for $20. Need to see if it has spark, otherwise I suspect maybe the same issue.
good luck with it and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel do you know if it requires a special spark plug? Or will any mower plug do?
@@MrJeepsterman I wouldn't call it special but it does require a specific spark plug. Call a local lawn and garden place and tell them what you have. They will tell you what plug it requires and if they have one.
When removing the nuts for the air filter, sometimes the stud will loosen out with the nut, therefore that can break the seal or worse?
Quite possibly
Man, it look's like that sparkplug came off the titanic !
I agree with
I hoped you might help me.
I want you to know I appreciate your reply just the same. Thank you!
P.s. The seller didn't realize either, guess it had been too long. They soldnitbfor a song and now I feel a bit guilty.
@@HomeGaragechannel Had I not figured it out before I saw your post, what you said would have made it click also, so great explaination and diagnosis you offered. 👍 I actually found another person with the exact same symptoms, including that the blade turns normal, bit pulls so hard...
Hi where did you get the pressure checker and attachments? Thanks for the upload great vid

@@HomeGaragechannel Hello I have a couple of these I'm resurrecting. What would cause such a hard kick back when starting? Once I get her going it starts surging after about 15 or 20 seconds

I was right with you but would probably have pulled the blower housing to check for rats and rust on the mag. I hardly run into a bad plug but it's not impossible. Thanks and BLESSINGS!
makes good sense
@@HomeGaragechannel I try but poverty and desperation help a lot too.
Running these at 32:1 seems to be better than 50:1.
yes you are correct
Hi I have a important question. So I have a lawnboy duraforce and whenever I let go of the top handle to shut off the engine it screeches really loud unless I slowly release the handle bar. This means the flywheel break is worn. But is there any way to fix that. Like can that part be replaced, can WD40 fix it, and where even is it located
I'll have to check to be sure but the flywheel break needs to be replaced and wd40 will not fix it. The break should be under the flywheel.
I've been there... Damn gaskets
I hear ya. Thanks for the comment.
Hope you can get it working again. good luck
That's a Bad boy, love the Suzuki engine.

That was scarey, I thought such a great machine wouldn’t start after all that. I wonder why it didn’t start in the beginning even though it had compression, spark, and fuel.
The fuel wasn't making it's way into the engine. Thanks for the comment
It mowed all last summer fine,,but locked up 2 days ago..so I got my free honda out

Hey man I got a Toro commercial mower I put the carburetor in the coil still won't crank?
its a 2 cycle like the one in the video then? I would do a compression test to make sure the piston rings aren't worn out.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks, I surely could use one!

we have tried so many things, like getting a new carburetor, and checking the compression

I went through this whole ordeal on my personal pace and found the cord on the left of the handle was off. Put it back on and voila, it started. Now I have a new corroborator. Came with all new gaskets and it was cheap enough to just replace it.
that's exactly what I would have done too. Thank you Ann
The Mower will not idle smooth at all.
yours must have a different jet setup then,.
My mower also has the while corrosion around the Chute.
dang you've worked on this mower alot.
actually it's not the same mower. one has paint missing the other doesn't
and yes I do work on them both quite a bit as the owner is pretty bad at taking care of them.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks very much

First thing you should have done take plug out check for spark, put some fuel directly into cylinder put plug back in and tried it.
When you have a weak spark it can be due to flywheel having rust on it, fixed a few motors with this problem.
