I found the difficulty level tuning recommendation to be a really good idea. Would be awesome if they could maybe add in an auto tuning mode for next years game. Maybe it would have you run 5 - 10 laps, and could automatically adjust difficultly based on your lap times. Additionally, I'd love a way to add our own brake markers so that you can easily turn off the dynamic racing line without having to completely memorize every brake point. Maybe during the practice mode, you could allow the marker adding/editing. This would also throw a great curveball when the weather changes from practice mode to race day.
Thanks for the kind words 🙂 That's an interesting suggestion too. I know some games (I think DiRT 4 did this) had dynamic difficulty suggestions as part of the First Time User Experience (FTUE). You do you first race, game goes "you're this quick, want to try Hard?".

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this here yet but you can customise each camera in the settings menu, you can even disable the halo column so its not visible in cockpit mode.

Great video with solid ideas/concepts. However, @2:43 we're told to "set up a race at Catalunya"? The only way I've found to do this is from the Solo->Grand Prix menu and I don't see me or my teammate. Not sure if this vid is still monitored but sure would like some help. The race set up seemed to be a bit glossed over as if I was supposed to know what I was doing... which I don't ....
I am brand new to this game (I literally just downloaded it) and I started with standard race mode. For me, I think the most difficult thing was to use the team radio while driving at the same time. If anyone here has a steering wheel, is it easier with the steering wheel? On PS4 I need to first use R1, then select from the list with up/down arrows and use arrow-right to select the team radio message. It’s just too many button taps when I’m driving in like 180mph. I guess I need to build more muscle memory on these things :)
hey PJ great vid, is there any resource for someone like me who is even more of a beginner? Like I don't even know a single thing about checking tire wear or what the battery level means and the ERS thing? i'm completely new to the game and series.
Hello thank you so much for this video it really helped me and I just wanted to know what settings to go with in the gearbox and how to get the best out of a manual gearbox And thank you again for this helpful video
Great tips PJ, had the game a few days and yet to try it, as my 16 year old daughter with no interest in gaming is hogging it and i cant get near. Will definitely use your tip for AI level as I have found in the past, if its to easy it gets boring very quick. ( why have I never thought of this?????????).
Hey. Love your vids. I had a question. I bought the tmx force feedback thinking I'd instantly be able to do better at dirt 2.0, f1 and asseto corsa. But nopw it seems harder than with the controller. Any setting suggestions or just suggestions overall?
What helped me when learning was to pick a car/track I know well, and at the end of every day drive it for 10-20 minutes, seeing if I can go faster. Eventually I beat my controller times.
Where is the Track Select screen to be found to choose Catalunya as in this video? It does not appear in Track Acclimatisation in Career Mode Casual setting that I can find? Brilliant videos that are very helpful.

I'm pretty new to the F1 video game scene. The only game in the Codemasters lineup that I've purchased is F1 2015, and I enjoyed it. Would you recommend F1 2020? While the classic cars, F2, graphics, and driving model are all eye-candy to me, I need the opinion of someone who's been with this series for a while. Thanks in advance.
I’m biased (I work at Codemasters) but F1 2020 is such a huge leap over 2015 (which people say is one of the worst F1 games) that I’d recommend it to anyone.
@@PJTierney Wait, people say F1 2015 is bad? That's really surprising to me. Maybe it's because I have low standards (I'm a NASCAR fan and there has not been a game comparable to the F1 games in at least 10 years), but I still think it could've been a lot worse. Sometimes, I feel like F1 fans don't realize how good they have it with their video games. Not saying the game is perfect by any means, but I am surprised how many people disliked it while I thought it was pretty fun.
It was an okay game but the F1 series set a pretty high bar. I think the reason it wasn't so well-liked was because it was the first game on current consoles and a bit rough around the edges.
Was curious so I downloaded the 2019 version and am currently playing with a controller... so yea I definitely need a steering wheel 🤣🤣🤣 love the game though

If that happens move Offset Horizontal until it disappears. In the future I want to do a video getting all of the real-world camera angles perfect.
This taught me a lot thanks! As far as the camera view i prefer the cockpit view but zoomed out a little bit so i can see the rear view mirrors. I want the same view the real driver sees and i think that’s close enough to it. I tried the tv pod view and i felt like i was too good, like i was cheating if that makes sense lol. I’m weird 🤷🏾♂️ lol
It's harder because of the extra variables in rally. There's no real way to easily figure out your level other than to keep playing and seeing what the gaps are. In My Team Career you'll start out at a very low difficulty, just keep earning Championship promotions until you can't go any higher 🙂
Hi ...how do I adjust the ai.? I can't navigate around this game very well I'm I'm new player.i can only.drive in career mode and I can adjust ai.can you please.tha ks
i'm not a beginner but i haven't owned any current f1 games and have been f1 2016 A LOT over that past 6 months, i'd say i'm above average and on time trial can get within 2 or 3 seconds of a word record on a controller, i played the f1 2019 demo and felt very slow putting in lap times only a tiny bit quicker than in 2016 which probably shouldn't be right, do you have any tips on how to get used to the game from an older one or something like that
2016 was the older generation F1 cars with the narrower wings and tyres. These days it seems you need to lean on the downforce more at high speed, and get on the power early at low speed.
I tried this first with McLaren using lando with difficulty at 63 and then Mercedes with Hamilton. Put difficulty to 64 and won with less than a sec in front of max. Problem I find is AI difficulty varies from track to track. Some tracks they’re too strong and others they’re weak. Would this test work in my team?
Test should work in most places however the AI skill varies from track-to-track, yes. When I tested, was at 70. After Melbourne in My Team I had to up it to 80 which feels right.
PJ Tierney what about adjusting it based on the position you’re in on the vehicle comparison table. I’m 2nd behind Mercedes but on powertrain I’m 8th so should my times be near to Mercedes or teams like red bull and haas?
Hi PJ..i'm a complete newby to this..i use a PC controller..why is there no practice mode to help ppl like me get used to using the controller itself..thanks.
It shouldn't matter really. I tend to avoid Mercedes/Ferrari/Red Bull for this as their drivers are very fast, so McLaren is a good bet. Also, if you want a totally even field, do it in an F2 car.
Race Style can be changed before you load up a race. Let’s say you’re in Grand Prix, you pick your car, then your driver, then the track. Next screen, look out for the Casual/Standard option top right.
I’m frustrated with my lap times, I download setups and I can never reach top 100. For example I try my hardest on Vietnam and I’m 2 seconds slower and I can’t figure out how to get faster times
It can be tough to see where, but there is something that helps. Pause the game, go to Ghosts. Turn on Rival Telemetry Mode. It’ll paint a line on the track that shows you where your rival is braking and turning.
Because of My Team mode and improved AI, I am going to say yes, however, I skipped a few years before getting this one, so it was extra justifiable to me.
How Come the ers stops working almost every lap. Got major upgrades to ers, but almost every lap it turns red at the end of a lap, although it says 50+ left?
Hmm, all I can think is that you're using it too much around the lap. I have an ERS guide, you should never really use ERS in 7th or 8th gear, or in 1st.
its not possible to gain that many places in solo when his tyre's need chaning .pits and loses soo many places it not possible to make that many in the time given
i have my setting for the AI on 10 and i still get P15 or worse, i am certainly not enjoying myself and thought about trading the game in. could anyone give me advice because i’m very close to throwing my tv out the window
Are you using Casual Race Style? As you're very new, I'd recommend that. Also, assuming you're using Formula 1 cars, some teams are stronger/faster than others. In general, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have the best cars, Williams the slowest and everything else is in-between. The My Team car starts out as slow as Williams, until you develop it over a few seasons.
PJ Tierney i mean on multiplayer when i’m racing not My Team. I always get gapped by a Renault and then forced into a wall by some dirty racer. Also i just cannot get some sharp corners in 1st gear and when i’ve slowed down and have control of the car and then i just go onto the grass/gravel and then get penalties. Might aswell just give up ffs
Maybe I should be taking tips from you then 😅 I'm around 70-80 depending on how far into an F1 game I get. Can more than hold my own in Multiplayer though 👍🏻
Around there is perfect. I did my own AI test today (McLaren) and found that 70 was just right. I was half a tenth off my teammate and when I went to the race, I had a great battle so I’m happy.
In short: Track Acclimatisation: learn tracks by passing gates. Tyre management: Beat a target laptime without putting too much strain on the tyres. The less you turn through a corner, the more you go into the Purple (good). Fuel Management: Beat a target laptime without using too much fuel. Lift off the throttle before corners to save fuel, and don't go too hard on the throttle on the exit. ERS Management: Same as Fuel but for ERS. Pressing the Overtake button makes you go faster, but drains the battery. Qualifying Pace: Be fast. Race pace: Set multiple good laps in a row.
On top of what PJ said if you find the practice tasks difficult to complete within the set pace time, lower the difficulty for practice and then put it back up for qualifying and the race. Some of those practice tasks are a pain in the rear on a high difficulty.
Choose whatever you like. In theory, if you balance the AI right it won’t matter what car you use afterwards. I like to balance with a McLaren or Red Bull.
I have a guide on how to get faster 😀 One tip I can give here though: Go into Time Trial, pick a rival. Pause the game, go to Ghost options and look up Rival Telemetry. It'll draw a racing line on the road showing you where they braked for each corner.
Both of these are explained via in-game tutorials. If you pause the game and look up Tutorials they’re in there 👍🏻 ERS is the Energy Recovery System in a Formula 1 car. Essentially, it’s a rechargeable battery that boosts the car’s power when you accelerate, and charges when you slow down. DRS is the Drag Reduction System. When you’re close behind another car, DRS opens a flap on the rear wing that makes the car go faster on a straight.
@@dragonmaster3030 The tutorials cover many things based on F1. I don't remember the specifics but there's a lot there. Good for understanding the rules of the sport.

In some cars the roll hoop might clip into frame.
I have a camera settings guide too if that helps 👍🏻
Do you have any recommendations for finding the right difficulty level in DiRT?
It's harder because of the extra variables in rally.
There's no real way to easily figure out your level other than to keep playing and seeing what the gaps are.
In My Team Career you'll start out at a very low difficulty, just keep earning Championship promotions until you can't go any higher 🙂
Another question :)
Do you need to be 0.100 faster or slower then your teammate?
Doesn’t matter. I consider a tenth either way to be fine.
Hi ...how do I adjust the ai.? I can't navigate around this game very well I'm I'm new player.i can only.drive in career mode and I can adjust ai.can you please.tha ks
can you make one on how to defend
I do want to make on on racing tactics at some point 🙂
i'm not a beginner but i haven't owned any current f1 games and have been f1 2016 A LOT over that past 6 months, i'd say i'm above average and on time trial can get within 2 or 3 seconds of a word record on a controller, i played the f1 2019 demo and felt very slow putting in lap times only a tiny bit quicker than in 2016 which probably shouldn't be right, do you have any tips on how to get used to the game from an older one or something like that
2016 was the older generation F1 cars with the narrower wings and tyres.
In My Team I'm starting to do that now 🙂
PJ, I can't pit in a race. Do you know the setting to rectify this?
Lol I didn't know about the AI tuning, I was adjusting it as I went along in MyTeam hahaha
I'm at around 85 right now, feels just about right.
i follow the racing line in australia but for some reason when i turn at difficult corners i cant turn fully i go on to the gravel
You're probably entering too fast or letting off the brakes too late.
Hi PJ..i'm a complete newby to this..i use a PC controller..why is there no practice mode to help ppl like me get used to using the controller itself..thanks.
I would recommend the Casual Race Style. That’s your first thing to try. Once you feel you can get around the tracks, maybe try Standard.
@@PJTierney Thanks PJ..i'll persevere then..& u got yourself a new subscriber
Thank you 🙂 Once you get the hang of it, F1 will be a lot of fun. I have controller settings available too by the way.
how do i change wheels and fuel?
For technical details like that, pause the game and look up the tutorials in there 🙂
Does it matter what f1 car you drive voor your ai setting?
Sorry for my bad inglish.
It shouldn't matter really. I tend to avoid Mercedes/Ferrari/Red Bull for this as their drivers are very fast, so McLaren is a good bet.
Also, if you want a totally even field, do it in an F2 car.
Can you change the driving style and if so then where?
I'm struggling with turns and don't know when to brake and do I accelerate when I brake?
My other guides should help 🙂
@@PJTierney okay thanks for telling me
@@PJTierney but what would you recommend would you accelerate when braking ?
I wouldn’t blip the throttle when braking. Only touch the accelerator after you pass the apex of the corner.
@@PJTierney thanks for the tip!
How to setting Full / sim cars Damage
If you're using Casual Race Style it's locked off, switch to Standard instead.
Do you think in your opinion that it’s justifiable to buy f1 2020 currently?
I'm biased because I work at Codemasters, so I'd recommend checking out reviews 👍🏻
@@PJTierney Ahah, makes perfect sense
Because of My Team mode and improved AI, I am going to say yes, however, I skipped a few years before getting this one, so it was extra justifiable to me.
I feel like it's a big upgrade form 2019 but there are some things they have to fix
@@deadmanbardii Give it time, any major bugs will be ironed out over time I'm sure.
How Come the ers stops working almost every lap. Got major upgrades to ers, but almost every lap it turns red at the end of a lap, although it says 50+ left?
Have you worn out the components too much? In My Team and Career if you don't replace them after a while, they'll stop giving you full charge.
@@PJTierney All fresh components. Did monza this afternoon, every lap but two, the ers turned red on the straight to parabolica or in parabolica
Hmm, all I can think is that you're using it too much around the lap. I have an ERS guide, you should never really use ERS in 7th or 8th gear, or in 1st.
I'll check it out, thank you for your time
its not possible to gain that many places in solo when his tyre's need chaning .pits and loses soo many places it not possible to make that many in the time given
Was hoping the controller had a tilt setting, steering with a toggle stick is so unnatural
I really like that AI test
Been using it for years. I have a longer video on it on my channel too 😊
i have my setting for the AI on 10 and i still get P15 or worse, i am certainly not enjoying myself and thought about trading the game in. could anyone give me advice because i’m very close to throwing my tv out the window
PJ Tierney how do i go onto casual race mode ?????????
I can’t find steering assist it’s not there anymore :(
If you're in Casual Race Style it should be enabled by default.
Im currently on 104 ai, but as soon as I go to 105 I get destroyed
Maybe I should be taking tips from you then 😅
I'm around 70-80 depending on how far into an F1 game I get. Can more than hold my own in Multiplayer though 👍🏻
If you had a join button I'd press it just for that AI calibration tip.
where did you get it on? steam?
2:28
Do you need to test it without a setup or?
No setup, but try and get a clean run where you tried your best. I normally get 2 good laps in when I do this.
@@PJTierney ahh okay, you need to be in 0.100 of a second within your teammate right? (The gap of the time)
Around there is perfect.
I did my own AI test today (McLaren) and found that 70 was just right. I was half a tenth off my teammate and when I went to the race, I had a great battle so I’m happy.
@@PJTierney ahh okay, thanks mate!! 💪🏻🔥👑
@@PJTierney do i need to "warm up" before the quali?
I don't understand the free practice, the fuel one and the tyre one
In short:
Track Acclimatisation: learn tracks by passing gates.
At 2:28
Can you choose every car you want??
Choose whatever you like. In theory, if you balance the AI right it won’t matter what car you use afterwards. I like to balance with a McLaren or Red Bull.
@@PJTierney ahh okay! Thanks mate!
it’s annoying getting 1:40 at Vietnam while others get 1:38 easily
I have a guide on how to get faster 😀
One tip I can give here though: Go into Time Trial, pick a rival. Pause the game, go to Ghost options and look up Rival Telemetry. It'll draw a racing line on the road showing you where they braked for each corner.
Hwo do I braking?
I have ABS guides that will help you 🙂
What the hell is ers and drs, I have never heard of it
Both of these are explained via in-game tutorials. If you pause the game and look up Tutorials they’re in there 👍🏻
ERS is the Energy Recovery System in a Formula 1 car. Essentially, it’s a rechargeable battery that boosts the car’s power when you accelerate, and charges when you slow down.
DRS is the Drag Reduction System. When you’re close behind another car, DRS opens a flap on the rear wing that makes the car go faster on a straight.
@@PJTierney thanks, I'm not much into f1 so I never understood before what those mean. Is the tire compound uses also in the tutorial
@@dragonmaster3030 The tutorials cover many things based on F1. I don't remember the specifics but there's a lot there. Good for understanding the rules of the sport.
@@PJTierney thanks,. Cause I don't really know any of the specifics of it.
@@dragonmaster3030 F1 is complicated but real interesting once you figure it out :)
If you're driving on casual mode, just uninstall the game and turn the system off.
Alternatively, let people enjoy the game however they like 🙂
How can I get full F1 2020 pc game free download?
I quit the game after 5 minutes of dumb team settings, press releases and a whole bag of BS
