I sieve my recycled clay with 100 mesh, removing all tiny impurities and some grog out.

Simon, I've started making stilts with flat clay and nichrome wire from old kiln elements, cheers

Got too hot too soon at that early bit, right? That bloat. Us raw clay folks get that, from time to time. I've had bloating that seems to be from starting reduction too early when the clay body wasn't ready for it. But wadding seems a good idea for bloated bodies for sure! Love that bottle with the Lugettes, Simon!

🤗🤗. I love the surprise factor opening a kiln. It’s like Xmas any time of the year. Most people who buy your pots believe they’re buying because of your name therefore they believe in time it will grow in value especially after you’re long gone (God forgiving). Therefore they’ll argue for a replacement and you pay for shipping. Always a gamble. I love the seconds that are all over my house and shop and always learn from them. I’ve learned from you way back in Spain where your surroundings really made your work shine and still love those videos late at night. Keep doing your life’s work and sharing. We all never have finished learning have we??? 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

FYI people. That free movie place being mentioned in this post is highly suspect. Do your due diligence. Besides, this is a pottery channel for Pete’s sake. Should not have to address but just wanted fellow potters to know and be aware

After mixing reclaimed clay to a smooth yogurt consistency I use 3 layers of spray painters mesh (hardware store) lining a clean bucket. No more problems with foreign objects in.

Hi Simon Thats a pretty good firing.! I love the Tea Bowl and caddy. Actually I love it all. You and your bud vases. You got a bit of a thing going with those. I love the Blues you have coming through alongside the iron oxide. Compared to my DL tankard the blue adds a new dimension. Modern times I guess.

Simon, I have a idea and it may help protect the pieces on the bottom shelf due to the added heat. I did a video on my channel making a kiln shelf protector from driping or running glaze, but it could help insulate the pot somewhat from the bottom heat that is making it bloat. The protector has a raised bottom that lets air under it. Just think about it. See ya in August. eddie.

Wander if firing on top of some reusable 'kiln' cookies would help prevent the bloating and still keep them sitting flat so they don't become victims of that little to hot wadding warping. We have made some to fire on in the past because of very uneven shelves to keep the pots flat with clay body's that tend to get a little soft. Made disks of all sizes to have on hand.

When I can make and fire something that you think is a second, I will be very happy.

    Simon,
I wonder if that bloating might be reduced by holding your firing at about 900 deg f for an hour to allow the clay to outgas a bit due to it being not bisque. I have almost the same kiln set up and find if I fire a bit under cone 10 I get less bloating. I think that 306 clay needs to breath a bit on the way up before the glaze melts and seals in the gas. I’m going to try holding at cone 9 for an hour at the end too. I find my pyrometer also reads colder than actual at those higher temps.

The slower I fire, the less bloat I get (I raw glaze too). But the slower I fire the less sleep I get, so there's that.

I wasn't quite clear, do you leave the kiln openings open all night or just an hour or two and then cover with bricks?
    Thanks for your help.

Well I am having a change of thought about leaving the kiln to fast cool due to getting bloating. Reverting back to closing chimney flue after the firing immediately. Last firing had no bloating. Live and learn !

    • @BurgardPottery
      @BurgardPottery 2 роки тому

@@sleachpots so you don't think it was stuff in your clay, and cooling too fast can cause bloat as well. Good to know. Thank you for the information.

The link above to your website does not work, if you actually type the URL for your site then it works but the redirect trick that YT actually uses with links in video descriptions is broken for me.

@@sleachpots Unfortunately I can't see any other option but to consult YT's support staff, which initially means dealing with whatever automated nonhuman process they have in place, and that is probably full of bugs too.
