This is truly priceless! I've had a lot of problems with this and I'm improving now. Stiffness - problem 1. Second, I kindda got to the single stroke idea but something was still off. Then, after like 20 times looking at this video, it hit me - throw and catch the ball. So the hand is not actually still (with only fingers doing the job) but it's throwing and catching. Then it became better. Still struggling to get this nice spang-a-lang sound out of the cymbal but it's promising. Can't thank you enough for this one, Rob!
Perfect timing! (notification gang rise) I've been wanting to do jazz drumming with a trumpet player and an alto sax player, both friends of mine, for a while now; this is exactly what I needed!
These lessons just get better and better. Love the close up of the hand with the invisible stick. Also, I have the West Wing boxed set to work my way through...
Bro, I don't even got a drum or know how play the drums, but you're a great teacher. The way you talk, it's so clear your knowledgable and passionate. Keep up the good work!
Just tried this out and it's solved three problems in one go for me. First off, massively improved my Spang a Lang because I'm not trying to find space for three hits, secondly it's made keeping my Hi Hat regular a lot easier as I'm now just alternating between Right Hand and Left Foot for the beat and third, my right foot is no longer trying to fall in line with my right hand. So yeah, this works. Thank you, drums Yoda, for the lesson 😁 Now to figure out comping....
Okay Rob, I think I've got the ride hand, but can't get that snare! Could you give some tips on when to strike on the snare in the jazz swing? Thanks always for the great lessons.
As a lover of many types of drumming styles, I have to say while all of your content is absolutely fantastic, your jazz material is just brilliant. I really appreciate you stressing the whole loose upper body and hand when playing the ride pattern. So many in my experience overlook this.
thank you for inspiring me to touch the drums again after 10years! i'm practicing single strokes! great reggae lesson! lot to say, more to thanks !!!!!!!!!
Thanks learnt something new about sticking today from watching this. Perhaps you could show a demonstration of how to play without stressing the joints and shoulders my joints are really starting to feel the strain man thx keep them coming
As usual Rob you are great on simplifying the most diverse aspects of this marvellous instrument. Thanks for your persistent efforts to make us better performers. Cheers from Chile 🤘
THANKS ROB! A QUESTION: Can you do a segment on how to spang-a-lang using the conventional left hand grip on the snare to comp with the ride, especially at high speed? If you groove with this idea, can you show how to incorporate rim shot accents with the dancing left hand? I'm imagining Buddy Rich as I ask this question. Thanks so much. Great job!
Hi Rob, Another great video and tips to keep improve and maybe reach the bebop speed someday ... Also, I was wondering if there is any chance that you would do a video about getting into Afrobeat someday? Best, B.
Holy shit. I was practicing this spangalang. and fucked up my wrist.... Ive been icing it. and resting it. Alot. Then I watch this video and am witnessing how serious Rob is about being relaxed and remaining tension free. sorry for yelling.... THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Just dont force it... if you arent that fast, dont worry. Play until BEFORE you are tense. Absorb that. sleep. and do it again 1 bps faster. DONT FORCE IT! Your body will figure it out and the speed will come. Dont be me. LOL. Rob Knows what he is talking about.
Love the "Spang-a-lang!" How about what I call the sizzle? I'm not an avid player, but alway love learning these little styles. The jazz sizzle, I always think of it like the "Spang-a-lang" but done on the high hats? Always been curious how that was done.
I'm trying to work on my half-swing, find it difficult to be consistent. I'm in a rockband, and for one song, I don't want a full shuffle, but I don't want it straight either, just a hint of swing.
Another great lesson Rob and how clever to be able to play without a stick ! .... : ) I have a pretty good spangalang on the ride, but I am not as comfortable on the high hats for some reason ?
So this is gonna sound like a dumb question, but when you watch the slow motion shot there are three distinct movements. One of you striking with your wrist on the first partial, one of you catching the stick with your fingers on the third, but in the middle you very slightly drop your wrist. Like you’re digging into the rebound stroke. Is that something we should be doing for rebound strokes?
Yes its completely fine. The motion is a hybrid of the Moeller Technique and/or the Push-Pull technique. Both can be looked up on youtube. Hope that helps.
About the fulcrum, I get why you're saying it's at the middle finger, contrasted to the index finger. But watching the stick pivot in the slo mo, the fulcrum is actually the thumb! Which makes sense. Rob, do you ever get soreness in the base of the thumb playing like this? Does that indicate my hand is tight?
@@RobBeatdownBrown Rob. It was a general question. I see it a lot as of late. I have a full Maters kit and just wondering if there was any real benefit or just a new trend? Love your work Bro!

Good use of the push/pull technique. I like how you execute this. It's such a good idea, thanks a lot.

How do you set up metronome for that? 2&4?
Do you rebound a second time then pull up
Thanks man!

What ride is that ;)
Rob Brown has me sounding like I never thought I could play.
That’s a huge compliment man 🙂
Big Boss !!!
Okay #loosehand *noted

Jeremy Schneider fulcrum is middle finger- thumb versus index finger- thumb ;)
Rob, why do I always get an Akira Jimbo add when I start up one of your vids? He ain’t given me no spang a lang love.
3:18 okay man, what kinda voodoo is that? No stick and the sound continues? You da man.

Please Rob..let's not encourage subscribers to Spang-a-lang while watching the epic series Stranger Things.
I don't think tony Williams would agree
