Kamen Rider has a similar phenomenon. Kuuga gained some infamy for having women, especially mothers who had kids that were watching, tune in just to watch the main actor. This became known as the "Odagiri Effect", named after said actor. There's a reason most main Rider actors tend to be young, attractive men in their late teens/early 20's; it works.

    • @Ergeniz

I suppose my question then is: "Why are [Asian] females so attracted to the pretty boy archetype"? Why is the more muscular, traditional male look and bodytype that was more pervasive in the 80's not popular?

Girls and women really do carry fandom on their backs in general, at least in my experience over the years, since a big part of showing love for a movie/series/book/manga is to /create/ things to share with other fans and by doing so inspiring the next person to create something as well.
Fanfiction and fan art spaces are inhabited in a large part by women who like to ask "what if?" or would have loved to see a scene between point A and B of a journey that was never shown in canon - or who would like to give characters a happier end than the one they got. And it really does keep franchises alive, the perpetual outpour of appreciation and the labours of love which let show creators and writers and mangaka know that people see and support their work.
Rewatching IBO and diving back into the discussions of plot and characters, artwork and other fan creations has once again shown me that even when a show is long over, fandom keeps its heart beating for years and years.

I always assumed it was just because of the Japanese design/culture or maybe because my favorite of the series is G-Gundam which had far more masculine features on their male characters, Domon Kasshu is a beast and his love Rain looked like Cutie Honey haha. Thanks for creating your video~ It was incredibly informative, which I appreciate.
In regards to how women helped save Gundam, save is not quite the word I would use, as instead, it made Gundam more profitable. Rather than anime's and Gundam's typical demographic of male viewers, if you are able to appeal to both men and women, you overall able to make double the profit. For example, women who like anime generally prefer more relationship heavy (not just romances, but excellent chemistry between characters), dramas in order to be personally invested, story focused instead of just action, and also something easy on the eyes, and hot/handsome guys do exactly that. This is where the writing and doujins come from, as many women love writing fanfics to bring to life what they imagine and are inspired by what they watched, diverged from official canon. And also, women love shopping, so you can also include clothing collaborations, cute figures, acrylic stands, and other types of official goods as an incentive for women to spend on Gundam related merchanise besides the model kits. I personally am not a crazy fan of model kits, which my brother likes far more than I do, but I would buy anything that seems personally appealing. Even more so if it involves handsome/cool guys depending on their personality as well. Aha

I know there were plenty of other factors that lead to its poor ratings, but I can't help but notice one of the most poor performing Gundam series, After War Gundam X, has a much younger main character... Actually a lot of the series that didn't do well didn't have pretty boy leads like AGE, Victory, and G Gundam (to a lesser extent).Turn A didn't do too well despite having a feminine boy lead, though Loran's design isn't really bishonen, so maybe he didn't attract female viewers as much.

My gate opening to mecha genere and Gundam was Evangelion to have more themes and character conflict then just fighting shonen. I read Gundam wing manga and loved the comedy 4 koma at the end that push me to see Gundam wing anime.
What I also like was the more respectful way that the female characters were treated than most other shonen that I had accesss at the time. And that's unfortunaly this trope of bad developed female characters continues in shonen until today.

Man, Furusawa's line is incredibly annoying. Part of the draw of Gundam is how hard the science is in Gundam (save for the newtype stuff of course; also, not as hard as other shows that came after it but that's understandable). That's what Tomino aimed for. To ignore it is a slap in the face for the entirety of gundam. That's why Seed and Seed Destiny are labeled as "rule of cool" gundam shows and why they miss the mark with a number of folks despite their popularity.
I'm not really sure what I am, but based on what I remember, I'm a science lover turned tokusatsu fan turned mecha fan. My first Gundam was Wing but at the very same time I was watching Voltes V and Daimos. My favorite was and still is Gundam X (Garrod amd Tiffa are tied with Kamille and Fa for second place for best couple in Gundam; First place goes to Seabook and Cecily/Kincade and Berah). Speaking of which, thank you for adding Human Touch as background music (One of the only fully english songs in any Gundam show). I'm currently the type of gundam fan who likes everything but also one who likes gundam for the science more than anything else.
I already knew of the female fans being essentially the first gundam fans and so I wanted to see what other information I could gather in this video and I'm not disappointed. Good to know more regarding 00 since I didn't know any of that background stuff.

Seed absolutely still has its hard sci-fi traits. Gamma pulsed laser weapons. Mechs that are reliant on batteries since Fusion isn't available (unlike UC) and Fission is blocked. Etc. The ships even rely on "flip and burn" style manuevers to slow down from high speeds.
Every Gundam Series has its conceits, where realistic science is downplayed in favour of strengthening science fiction elements, but I would say with Seed it is about equal to the UCs treatment.

I think OPs point tho is even with gundam getting back on it's feet thanks to the female audience, without the model kit sales after it; it would have likely fallen again. 80's were a mecha renaissance and real robot and transforming toys was all the rage. Bad merch usually meant you were cancelled. It's not by some trick gunpla has bolstered Gundam so much today, it's kept it at the high production value and frequency most other franchises couldn't do (see: many anime franchises where new episodes have horrible animation). Your gunpla dollars really let bandai invest more into the shows.

This video utterly fails to understand the Gundam franchise, hense its unpopularity and obscurity in the West.

Hmm....so pretty boys for Gundam TV shows = profit, huh? No wonder *Gundam AGE* flopped. Their male MCs are meh & child-like in comparison. The biggest fail that Bandai could've avoided 😂.

But who gives an actual fck? Boys watch shoujo stuff and girls watch shonen stuff, so who cares?
I've seen many videos from ani-tubers who tried really hard to justify (manly) anime with cringy headlines like "iS BerSerK aCTuALLy FoR WhAMEn (or is it sexist)?"
People should just stop being cringy SJW's and make everything revolve around gender-politics and over-interprete things. Everybody can watch everything if they like or not if they don't like.

Ah yes, let's not make MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM about gender politics.
      Delusional.
