Yes, I have asthma (from growing up in a city). It's very easy to tell the difference between fresh air and polluted air. I'm also a runner and you lungs simply burn when around driving or idling cars. Car exhaust is one of the most noxious, poisonous substances we tolerate around us. It can actually kill you if you're in a closed space.

Central government instructed the CAZ to reduce NOx emissions, Greater Manchester proudly announced a comprehensive, wide-spread plan because health was the greatest priority, they wanted all the credit. Then there was a backlash and they were like 'well we don't want a CAZ we're being made to". It's a farce whichever side of the fence you sit.

As a resedent of Manchester i have used public transport a 5 mile journey on the bus took over 2 hrs & cost over £5 + a long walk in a taxi 15 minutes £10 & only a short walk & that bus no longer exists now it's 3 buses probably 3 hrs & god knows the price.

All these clean aor zones are unlawful, they are all different in regard to what is charged and how much and where you habe to pay. Inconsistent is what the law states should be stopped. We already have emissions test and charged to the amount in our MOT and road tax.
If these changes were really to benefit the environment, these local administration budgets would not be dependent on this extra income. Just paying a tax does not magically make the air cleaner or reduce levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The "some reduction is better than nothing" argument is already in play with the existing standards. Lack of supply, access to supply and infrastructure are all issues that require central government to resolve them...
The argument is people will be "encouraged" (some might say forced) to switch to compliant vehicles to avoid paying the charge, funds from Clean Air Zone charges (this is how its operated nationwide) have to be reinvested in the CAZ, such as road improvements, grants, etc
Absolutely, thanks to the Euro vehicle standards, newer cars are cleaner and the average NOx emissions have dropped by 75% since the 90's. Even though passenger vehicle miles has gone up (pushing NOx higher... new vehicles still emit NOx, just less of it).
Hypothetically If I have a twelve year old car with low milage say 30k miles and my neighbour has a five year old car with say 100k miles. Both passed the strict m.o.t. emissions test. How can my car be causing more pollution!!!
There are no night buses in Birmingham at all, so if this scheme is meant to get people into using more public transport there will be a problem. I very often finish work at midnight or later i work music venues , thats when all buses stop,so what's my choice? An Uber at £14 a trip?
Considering that 90% of the cars on the road are exempt then charging the poorest who can’t afford a new car and blaming them for pollution is just idiotic, cos 10% isn’t going to tip any balance. The point of the CAZ is to reduce curbside NOx emissions, so it is all about tailpipe emissions in this particular case. Part of the reason we have unsafe concentrations is because they relied on a natural progression and ever tightening vehicle emission standards, which was known to be ineffective because vehicle manufacturers were playing the system (i.e. VW emissions test cheat devices).
The transition will never happen naturally... There are plenty of cars from the early 2000s that are still going and could keep going for many years. There has to be a cut off point and it might as well be now. Why would people ever naturally transition if they don't have to

Single bus fares in london are £1.75, here in Manchester they're £2 and run every 15 mins at peeke times in a South Central suburb only 2 miles from the city centre, without any other alternatives for public transport. London buses even in the outer boroughs have much higher frequency and the options for rail are much larger and integrated. I lived for 18 years in london and no i live in manchester and the transport options are considerably worse and much more expensive per mile than across london.

Asthmatic, my biggest issue has been always with diesel vehicles. I recent years I've become aware of lpg autogas and have been running a volvo fitted with a brc kit for the last three years.. It's been hugely appreciated in cost saving and the co2 readout at mot is 0.0002. The mind boggles as to why this isn't being pushed as a Solution to the problem. And yet I've got a 2001 petrol and that's ulez compatible where as the 2000 lpg petrol isn't.. 🤦♂️ They are exactly the same spec of engine.

Hope your COPD gets better. Cars only produce 12% of the NOx, which has already reduced by 75% since the 90's. More particulate matter gets emitted from brakes / tyres / roads than the exhaust, hence why the tube is filthy, even though it's electric!
Incentivise. Improve public transport so that people don’t have to use cars driving into the city centre. Give people a council tax return if they can prove they have used a certain amount of public transport every month. Also, vans, taxis or an vehicle used for business purposes should be exempt from charge.

I have got to correct a statement in this video, viz "high polluting vehicles". I have a 1997 immaculate very low mileage BMW classic car which passes its emissions MOT test without problem each year. I only use it for two months in the summer doing under 400 miles (= 1 tank of petrol). I live just a mile from the Greater London border and run my car outside London and onto the motorway. Yet, I am required to pay £12.50 daily just to drive a mile out of London! Yet, the more modern cars, whose emissions are a bit lower than mine, can drive all day long in London clocking up thousands of miles and causing congestion, yet they do not have to pay robber Khan! Also it is not so well known that 50% of emissions in all petrol cars are generated through brakes, tyres and wear on the road. This is even more for the electric cars as they are much heavier due to their massive batteries. These PM particles are much more dangerous to health than the petrol fumes. Yet, somehow this is overlooked!

We need to clean our air up, not just in all major cities, everywhere. But there needs to be a govt backed scheme to trade in non compliant vehicles because not everyone can afford an ultra modern car, and huge investments in better transport links. Consumerism in the name of the environment is never green I‘ve looked into upgrading a vehicle by retrofitting emission reducing tech. £15k certification costs are the main obstacle. So consumerism (scrap & replace) becomes cheaper thanks to government rules! The air is actually very clean and has historically never been better since the industrial revolution. There is no need for a sudden urgency. Further improvement should take proportionate measures.
the air in the uk has never been as clean as what it is now, i,m lucky cos i live in a small village, & most of us still use a coal fire, & no central heating, & i don,t know anyone that has breathing problems, people,s home,s these days are a lot to blame for which way people breath, where they have the central heating on, the windows & door,s are all doubleglazed & draught free. Those taxi drivers are idiots, the cost of petrol and diesel is multiple times more than electricity. If they bought an electric taxi it would easily have enough range for a full day of driving around town and then they could recharge it at night on off peak electricity at a tiny fraction of the cost of petrol or diesel. The cost of electric cars is also coming down. MG5 Electric Long Range costs 30,995 GBP, however a taxi driver wouldn't need to pay VAT so knock off the VAT and that would save him/her 20% which brings the cost of it down to 25,829.17 GBP. An MG5 Electric Long Range is an estate car with 5 seats and a range of 335 km and it only take 42 minutes to recharge. So even if a taxi driver had to drive 335km in the morning, when they stop for lunch it'll be recharged. All the technology for people like these taxi drivers is here and they are cheaper, and yet they choose to keep driving petrol and diesel cars. Which just goes to show how powerful the fuel lobby is in the media.

There are over 400,000 Nissan LEAF's in the world, they started production in 2010 and it's right the end of their production cycle. Plenty of taxi firms around the world have used Nissan LEAF's in the past and they have done hundreds of thousands of miles.

All these clean aor zones are unlawful, they are all different in regard to what is charged and how much and where you habe to pay. Inconsistent is what the law states should be stopped.
We already have emissions test and charged to the amount in our MOT and road tax.
If these changes were really to benefit the environment, these local administration budgets would not be dependent on this extra income. Just paying a tax does not magically make the air cleaner or reduce levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
The "some reduction is better than nothing" argument is already in play with the existing standards.
Lack of supply, access to supply and infrastructure are all issues that require central government to resolve them...
The argument is people will be "encouraged" (some might say forced) to switch to compliant vehicles to avoid paying the charge, funds from Clean Air Zone charges (this is how its operated nationwide) have to be reinvested in the CAZ, such as road improvements, grants, etc
Absolutely, thanks to the Euro vehicle standards, newer cars are cleaner and the average NOx emissions have dropped by 75% since the 90's. Even though passenger vehicle miles has gone up (pushing NOx higher... new vehicles still emit NOx, just less of it).
Hypothetically If I have a twelve year old car with low milage say 30k miles and my neighbour has a five year old car with say 100k miles.

Considering that 90% of the cars on the road are exempt then charging the poorest who can’t afford a new car and blaming them for pollution is just idiotic, cos 10% isn’t going to tip any balance. The point of the CAZ is to reduce curbside NOx emissions, so it is all about tailpipe emissions in this particular case. Part of the reason we have unsafe concentrations is because they relied on a natural progression and ever tightening vehicle emission standards, which was known to be ineffective because vehicle manufacturers were playing the system (i.e. VW emissions test cheat devices).
The transition will never happen naturally... There are plenty of cars from the early 2000s that are still going and could keep going for many years. There has to be a cut off point and it might as well be now. Why would people ever naturally transition if they don't have to

Single bus fares in london are £1.75, here in Manchester they're £2 and run every 15 mins at peeke times in a South Central suburb only 2 miles from the city centre, without any other alternatives for public transport. London buses even in the outer boroughs have much higher frequency and the options for rail are much larger and integrated. I lived for 18 years in london and no i live in manchester and the transport options are considerably worse and much more expensive per mile than across london.

Asthmatic, my biggest issue has been always with diesel vehicles.
I recent years I've become aware of lpg autogas and have been running a volvo fitted with a brc kit for the last three years.. It's been hugely appreciated in cost saving and the co2 readout at mot is 0.0002. The mind boggles as to why this isn't being pushed as a Solution to the problem.
And yet I've got a 2001 petrol and that's ulez compatible where as the 2000 lpg petrol isn't.. 🤦♂️ They are exactly the same spec of engine.

The tube in london is over 100x worse in air quality terms than directly at the exhaust of a diesel vehicle.
Hope your COPD gets better. Cars only produce 12% of the NOx, which has already reduced by 75% since the 90's. More particulate matter gets emitted from brakes / tyres / roads than the exhaust, hence why the tube is filthy, even though it's electric!

I have got to correct a statement in this video, viz "high polluting vehicles". I have a 1997 immaculate very low mileage BMW classic car which passes its emissions MOT test without problem each year. I only use it for two months in the summer doing under 400 miles (= 1 tank of petrol). I live just a mile from the Greater London border and run my car outside London and onto the motorway. Yet, I am required to pay £12.50 daily just to drive a mile out of London! Yet, the more modern cars, whose emissions are a bit lower than mine, can drive all day long in London clocking up thousands of miles and causing congestion, yet they do not have to pay robber Khan!
Also it is not so well known that 50% of emissions in all petrol cars are generated through brakes, tyres and wear on the road. This is even more for the electric cars as they are much heavier due to their massive batteries. These PM particles are much more dangerous to health than the petrol fumes. Yet, somehow this is overlooked!
I don't know how she got from the City Centre to Rochdale in 9 miles! It's more like 14 miles.. !

Not to mention in the study that Sadiq points to, even traffic pollution is going to decrease by HALF without ULEZ next year, as the data is old, from 2019, they should have new data out last year... but I guess it wouldn't fit in with their narrative. . The newer vehicles still emit NOx. Don't worry, when revenue starts dropping again (people don't drive old cars for fun but necessity), Any Euro 6 car will be charged, Euro 7 will be allowed.

We need to clean our air up, not just in all major cities, everywhere. But there needs to be a govt backed scheme to trade in non compliant vehicles because not everyone can afford an ultra modern car, and huge investments in better transport links. TfL integration and pricing is a great model for any city region to emulate

I‘ve looked into upgrading a vehicle by retrofitting emission reducing tech.
£15k certification costs are the main obstacle. So consumerism (scrap & replace) becomes cheaper thanks to government rules!
The air is actually very clean and has historically never been better since the industrial revolution.
There is no need for a sudden urgency. Further improvement should take proportionate measures.
the air in the uk has never been as clean as what it is now, i,m lucky cos i live in a small village, & most of us still use a coal fire, & no central heating, & i don,t know anyone that has breathing problems, people,s home,s these days are a lot to blame for which way people breath, where they have the central heating on, the windows & door,s are all doubleglazed & draught free. It be like living in a vacume cleaner. I have an open fire which the chimney draws air to make it burn, but at the same time its constantly taking all the stale air out the rooms & replacing it with clean air, so when i get droughts blowing in from door.s & windows, in winter, i just build the fire up bigger, so i,m warm , but plenty fresh air at the same time.& thats the way its staying, cos when everyone,s home.s were like mine, somehow ashma or breathing problems were vertuly unheard of.
Those taxi drivers are idiots, the cost of petrol and diesel is multiple times more than electricity.
If they bought an electric taxi it would easily have enough range for a full day of driving around town and then they could recharge it at night on off peak electricity at a tiny fraction of the cost of petrol or diesel.
The cost of electric cars is also coming down. MG5 Electric Long Range costs 30,995 GBP, however a taxi driver wouldn't need to pay VAT so knock off the VAT and that would save him/her 20% which brings the cost of it down to 25,829.17 GBP. An MG5 Electric Long Range is an estate car with 5 seats and a range of 335 km and it only take 42 minutes to recharge. So even if a taxi driver had to drive 335km in the morning, when they stop for lunch it'll be recharged.
All the technology for people like these taxi drivers is here and they are cheaper, and yet they choose to keep driving petrol and diesel cars. Which just goes to show how powerful the fuel lobby is in the media.
Electric vehicles are a scam - petrol and diesel taxis they can get repairs done very cheaply through a friend, not through crooked dealers that charge a fortune.

Electric cars are still pretty expensive at the moment, many taxi drivers or firms simply cannot afford new vehicles right now.

There are over 400,000 Nissan LEAF's in the world, they started production in 2010 and it's right the end of their production cycle.
Plenty of taxi firms around the world have used Nissan LEAF's in the past and they have done hundreds of thousands of miles.
