I’ve looked at things like starforged and I really want them and really want to want them, but having played boardgames rather than rpgs all my life I find it so hard to sit down and just decide the outcome/story myself. I need rules that give me my parameters and tell me what’s possible and what isn’t. I like d100 space/dungeon, ( I know there’s 4ad, wasn’t a fan though), fabled lands, other more linear gamebooks, games like hexplore it Is there an rpg that’s like 90 per cent not an rpg ( but more like any of the above) and then only 10 per cent an rpg where it sometimes asks you to come up with your own stuff ? Or maybe I can play starforged/Ironsworn and then I utilise some exterior resource, where it just gives you all the outcomes and you just roll them up ? ( and it’s actually a really good fit, not just a fit because it needs to and the fit is pretty meh) Thanks !
I also had to laugh every time you brought up City--with the head of a giant dog looming over a cityscape--and mentioned the author's name was Clifford.
Solo RPG Friday - yet another reason to love Friday! Thanks, Daniel! I'm just getting started with my first Starforged campaign so this is good timing.
This is a truly unique version of Starforged world building. Too any of these turn into a Mandelorian clone. I love this example of the flexibility of the world building. See you at Callahan's for a drink sometime.
Thanks for covering this did not even know about it, ordered it straight away. Once again your tastes in books and games are totally on point with my own.
Really need to get back to starforge. I love the system, just not yet 100% on it. We played it as a group game and enjoyed it but I think solo is where it truly shines.
I played Iron Sworn a couple years ago & got all the Starforged items a couple months ago. I was a little surprised by Starforge’s complexity when compared to Iron Sworn. I feel there are a lot more Moves to learn & when to apply them. I had to pause, relax & just roll the dice and create the actions I wanted to from the Moves I used. I did enjoy the basic world building in Starforged & consider that gameplay.
Once again a great video, good information and very thorough. I have purchased a few new books that I had not and had in my library, really look forward to the cross time tavern. And I totally understand why you think that it is not a good starter game. I do on the other hand think it is a good place to start because whether you get the rules 100% right or not, which have to playing for well over 40 years I never get the rules right all the time, I just enjoy playing, but I think mostly it's good because it concentrates a lot on and visiting the narrative doing everything out of the story and making the rules part of that as opposed to the thing that you focus on the most. But if you're not into that then definitely not a good place to start. And on the other hand most people learn to play through dungeons & dragons and we all know what those rules are like. Once again great work and I look forward to your videos every time they come out.
Perfect timing and great review and intro - I've been looking to get into Starforged but was finding it a bit overwhelming to know how to get started. I'd love to play in the universe of the Alien movies. ❤❤❤ Would you please provide a run down of all the materials you are using? I see the book and the cards, and the printed material you referred to, but I also see a spiral bound book and some other bits and pieces.
Everything is just from the base KS pledge. The spiral bound book is just a collection of all the moves and oracles. The only thing that isn’t from the game is the board being used as a background. :)
It is well presented and explained in the rulebook. Top notch! But it still needs quite some commitment to get going. And after I looked at the oracle tables I was a bit disappointed on the possibilities. But maybe I was expecting too much.
Your mileage may vary but the oracles in Ironsworn are generally pretty loose and open to interpretation/personal association so the context really changes the results
I think I know what you mean. Starforged, and Ironsworn, are weird. It's both a difficult game to get going and an easy game to play, almost too easy, to where I felt like I had to unlearn some things about rpg's to find my way through Ironsworn the first time. They're also both wide-open sandboxes but still narrowly-focused on a certain kind of story and setting. It got a lot more fun when I leaned into playing the kind of story the games are built to tell than trying to stretch the games to fit my expectations.
@@BrentARJ I'm really not sure what I think of the system so far. I like the ideas, but I think I like the way they're implemented in other systems like Solitary Defilement better. I feel more like I'm gaming the system with Starforged than I do playing an RPG.
@@TheDungeonDive I think that's the thing, we're not playing an rpg in any way like we're used to. The moves are geared toward pushing you out of the driver's seat and forcing you to deal with the unexpected. I laughed out loud when you said in the video how you won't be using the Overseer card. I thought, "oh, we'll see about that." 😄 I don't have any experience with PbtA games before Ironsworn, but for me, the brilliance of the system is not in how it lets me tell the story I want to tell, but how it collaborates with me to tell a story I never could have envisioned beforehand. That said, these are pretty much the only storytelling games I enjoy, so I'm no expert on the subject. Normally I prefer a loose sketch kind of story that has a lot of atmosphere and style but not a ton of complex lore and factions and interweaving plots to keep track of.
Thanks for the reading recommendations! I hadn’t heard of a couple of those novels. Love your channel… I just recently discovered and subscribed to @allfictionisfantasy too.
100% agree fiction is the best thing for Soloist! Consuming the media itself is the best thing that helps imagination flows. Now I need to check out the reading list :)
Every time you mistakenly call it Iron Helm, Jason Glover's dark influence grows.
Hahah!

This is great! This games had me intrigued for a while, looking forward to the rest of the series!

Great video on a great game! Big fan.
Very nice intro! Got the PDFs, but still playing the classic Ironsworn. While soloing, I go with 4, 3, 3, 2, 2 - as suggested in Ironsworn Lodestar

Very excellent in depth coverage. Once again showing why you are the master of game reviews!
Thanks, Don. :)

I like how you are using the books to help with inspiration for your game. I picked up the Death World trilogy might help with Death in Space.

That's a really dope world/character/theme you've built up there.

Finally yes!!!! Welcome to failing a lot! It makes the game awesome
I really like the dice system.
@@TheDungeonDive the dice are awesome for sure. The system makes a great foundation for other game supplements like solitary defilement
Totally agree.

Amazing! I'm studying Starforge in these days! Good choice Daniel!
Have you read new king? :o i liked it (:
Not yet.

Damn - now I have to check out Solitary Defilement :-P
Greatness!
Great stuff!
Thank you for putting all those sci fi books on my radar! I'm glad I watched this video...

Good timing , ordered the pdf earlier today. Lensman series , though I read it in the 60s!.
16:38 - I like how the Icon of Truth is a Flux Capacitor 😝🙌
Haha. Is it? :D

It's surprising to me how few people into the hobby talk about reading.
I own both IronSworns - every time i go to play i get so involved with what im going to create; i never even make it to playing...
That’s all part of play!
