- We all know Sweden as a progressive, forward-thinking Nordic nation, but I bet some of you are wondering what it is that makes Sweden stick out as being ahead of the rest of us. In today's video, I'll be digging into 5 of the things that, simply put, the Swedes are just doing right. The 5 things that Sweden just does better! So follow along, and let me know if you agree that the Swedes are good at these things, or if there are other key differences that the rest of the world should be learning from Sweden!

Thanks for bringing Allemansrätten! The original purpose (long ago) was that everyone should be able to travel through the whole country and surviving in the woods by eating whatever you found, berries, fruits etc. *But* there are some _very_ important restrictions like you can't break branches of trees and making a fire on cliffs or big rocks. We learn about this in shool, and to *respect* nature! You can be there, walk there and eat whatever you find there - *but you can not destroy it in any way!*
you're more than welcome! I'd like to do another video about it sometime where I dig into it in a bit more detail, as it really is fascinating! good point about making sure people learn to respect the nature though, very important addition well made!
@@JustaBritAbroad I think that's a good Idea. One important thing to remember is that there ar areas 'naturreservat' with restriktions in Allemansrätten. And also some plants and mushrooms are protected because the are very rare and cmust not be picked. This can be the case in some areas or in the whole country, so you really ned to inform yourself if you go to places you don't usually visit.
Sabaton is one biggest metal bands from Sweden. Their drummer is married with the dutch female singer Floor Janssen and she sings in one of the greatest Symphonic metal bands in the world Nightwish.
And she is as you nowadays living in Sweden with dogs cats horses and a child. Floor ranks as one of the top female metal singers in the world.
Allemansrätten rules! And the "as long as you leave it as you found it" really works in more places than just in some part of a forest, hence the recycling :-)

The Swedish impact on music is not only in modern music, btw. There are many opera singers, conductors, instrumentalists and choirs that are just as famous within the word of classical music.
This reminds me of a story of when Pavarotti during an interview was compared by the reporter to Jussi Björling. Pavarotti is said to have replied: "Please, I'm only human!" =)
If you want some great Swedish metal bands to listen to I heavily recommend Sabaton, Amaranthe and Raubtier. 🤘😈🤘

Sabaton are amazing! They teach real stories of military history through heavy metal 🤘 absolutely one of my fav bands! If you watch their UA-cam videos I advise putting the captions on to get all the story. Their animated story videos are really informative also.
I recommend No bullets fly animated video and Nightwitches animated video. Also Bismark official video and Christmas Truce is a great introduction to the band and where to start.
And if you want harder and darker metal then try Orbit Culture, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames or Thyrfing.

Allemansrätten isn't actually written in law, but it's mentioned in our grundlag. The base principle is "Don't disturb, don't destroy", and as someone else mentioned, I think a deep dive into allemansrätten would make a great video. I have also experienced that foreigners sometimes don't understand allemansrätten and its core principle, and they cut branches and sometimes even build little shelters from trees they cut down. Oh, and the littering is horrible sometimes! 😭
Grundlag = constitution, so it's serious business.

Some swedish metal bands to check out, in no particular order: Amon Amarth, Candlemass, Entombed Raubtier, Bathory, Sabaton, Amaranthe, Månegarm. I could go on for a lot more but those are my favourites.🤘🤘
Jag vet inte om det har lika stor påverkan idag som när jag växte upp. Men Musikskolan var en viktig kugge för unga som ville hålla på med musik. Man fick låna instrument, man kunde boka lokal att repa i. Man kunde till och med spela in demo-kassetter (ja, så gammal är jag :) ). Flera av dom fördelarna har ju minskat idag när både instrument och annan utrustning har blivit billigare och mer lättillgängligt.
The metalscen from sweden you should listen to Sabaton, Therion, Candlemass and last but not least Europe....
I came very close to moving to Sweden from the UK about 6 years ago. I only didn't because then I met my now wife. As we now have a son moving from grandparents makes this unlikely now. We will definitely be holidaying in Sweden when the world gets back to normal.

@@JustaBritAbroad My old boss was Swedish (from Gothenburg) and had a few trips over there when I worked for him. I've always had a fascination for Scandinavia in general and my experiences of Sweden just made it seem like the perfect place for me.

As beeing Swedish myself I enjoyed your list, but talking about allemansrätten, there is actually one exception of what you are allowed to pick and that is, of all things, hazlenuts! They were considered so valuable in the old days that they are a no no.
I'm a Swede and I didn't know that. On the other hand I've never found any hazelnuts in nature.
I beleive moss is an exception too
@@zpitzerI think you're right. As I understand it, you can only pick moss and lichen if you are allowed by the land owner and even then just in a small scale. And not if it's protected, of course.
There's also an old law, that I think is still there, that all acorns belongs to the king. Specifically for his pigs to eat to get superior flavour. Not that anyone would mind if you pick them. No one cares about this law anymore, and most people don't know about it.
@@kajsan760 I think you refer to the law called "Huru svin må i ollonskog släppas" (how you may release swine in woods with acorn). I really like that title, btw. This law is from 1734 (had to google that :-) ) It was not just the king's pigs that could eat acorns though, you could let your pigs lose in your own forrest. I've no idea if there iwas an even older law that stated that all acorns belonged to the king.

This is a tough one - but take a look at Swedens military strategy. Sweden has had peace for very many years. We have claimed to be neutral (which I do not agree with), BUT the point is still clear: Sweden has had peace for a very long time.
Sweden has truly balanced on the edge of the knife, many times. And still made it. And for defense, I doubt that any country in the world have managed their own air defense as good as Sweden. We have built our own fighter jets, even as a very small country.
No, I am definitely not happy with all of this - but we have peace. And manage it.

Brill video. Btw, Allemansrätten is written into our Constitution, in other words very difficult to change. It would be fantastic to see a video solely on Allemansrätten, as many non-swedes don't know enough about it, ie what you can and can't do. Eg, you can pick berries and Chantarelles, but you are not allowed to break off branches on trees, not even dead ones. Keep up the good work and remember, it's better to stay six feet apart than six feet under (Covid).
Allemansrätten means that trespass is very limited. You can't hang around peoples homes, but private land is not closed off. You can basically go anywhere on the surface of the earth without being shooed off.

I still kind of like, Ace of Base. It was big in the early to mid 90's. Spottily was started by a Swede I think Daniel Ek, and I can't remember the other guy. I did a report on Spottily for a class last year. I am not the biggest fan of Zara Larsson but I love "Uncover." And "Lush Life" is okay. And of course IKEA. I did a mini-blog on IKEA as well.
yeah, the Swedish impact on music is mental isn't it🤩and as you say, Spotify is a great example of them changing the game again! my girlfriend quite likes Zara so I was actually at one of her concerts last year and the girl can definitely sing! as you say, uncover is🤩
Alongside the parental leave there is also a nice system for childcare with preschools and I guess even the morning and afternoon care for children in school is special. At least the price is pretty special. At the moment I'm not sure exactly what the costs are and ofc it may vary between different "kommuner".
Other countries have their system of daycare etc. but when I have talked to people in other countries they seem to think it's pretty special how it works here.

Well those things are mostly the same here in Finland. Pregnent woman can stay out from her job after 154 days of pregnancy for the "mothers vaccation" (straight stranslation from our own word for "äitiysloma"). It lasts 105 days (sundays are not counted) and your employer pays for her salary at that time.
After that mom or dad can leave at home until the child turns two years old. That time is called "vanhempain vapaa" (parental leave). Goverment pays from that time daily allowance for five days of the week.
There is also three week period for fathers to be home with the baby. It´s called "isyysvapaa" (fathers leave) and employer or goverment pays for that time to the dads salary.
Well the music scene is little bit different in Finland. We import mostly metal music and it´s known fact that Finland has most metal bands for capita in the world. Yes, that is one thing were we beat heck out of swedish 😂. Even thou we are "happier" than swedish we still are so grimm and evil that we hit out hard with our metal.
We don´t have very much of pop music that had gone to charts (few of course, but not too many). Before larger metal scene back in 70´s and 80´s when Sweden was mostly known from Abba Finland was known more of classical music like Jean Sibelius. We´ve also had very talented conductors like Esa-Pekka Salonen who is by the way at this moment principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, conductor laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and music director of the San Francisco Symphony.
All mans right here in Finland is basicly same as in Sweden. We can go to forrest and pick berries and mushrooms, but not from anyones yard. We usualy say foreigners that stay so far out of private properties that you cant see the house or buildings from the closest yard and no-one cannot say to you that you are too close. Same thing for camping and making a fire. No-one wants to see someone putting camp up too close. Always keep places clean and never leave trashes or anything else behind. Also better check first that it´s not too dry becouse then it´s illegal to make open fire (common sense).
We don´t have any fancy word for our coffee brakes we have in work (and we drink more coffee than swedes 😂). We don´t usualy eat so much of sweet things on our coffee brakes like swedes. Sometimes yes, but i rather eat something thicker like bread. And of course here we are proud specialy of our ryebread. It gives good amount of energy and fibers that keeps better hunger away than white bread or buns.
And same as in Sweden we have lots of coffee places that sells buns and pastries, but i think those are more of a fancypants who sit in offices and have light jobs 😄.
I have a flashback that this is something i´ve told you before some other comment earlier last year.
And what comes to recycling i think we are little bit futher on that too. My friend moved back to Finland from Täby and she always says that we handle recycling way more precise than swedish. Well we started here before 90´s and that time it was woluenteer and only paper had to recycle, but when there came other awailable bins for glass, metal, plastic and so on, people started to use those in most households.
I must agree, from a swedish angle it feels like Finland is doing much the same things as we are but just a little more… hardcore.
Oh and I must thank you also for one of the greatest nights of television when monsters conquered the eurovision song contest. Go Finland!
I think the nordic countries are very similar, this video could have been about any one of us. (Except for the metal. Sweden and Finland has the best metal bands. But I am not that interested in black metal, Norways claim to fame)
Metal here is so many great bands, In Flames 🔥 Amaranthe, Sabaton, Dead by April, Dark Tranquality, Eleine and many many more.
Metal (not mentioned yet) Entombed not easy listening but they are/were important in the genre.
Indie pop Thomas Stenström, Miss Li, Håkan Hellström.
Rock the Hives , Hellacopters, the Nomads.
Theres of course lots more but metal and indie pop are very big genres here.
It's also worth to point out that about six percent of the Swedes sing in choirs. I live in a "kommun" (what's the English word for that?) with about 7000 inhabitants and off the top of my head I can think of seven choirs. There are probably a few more that I don't remember or even know about.
so we have districts and counties, so I would say "district" is the most similar in this instance, since region and county are probably more similar! wow, its impressive to hear that the movement is still so strong though, nice!! how did you get involved in your choir?
Municipality would be the closest translation.
@@JustaBritAbroad My first choir was in "musikskolan" when I was about eleven. Then I've been singing in choirs on and off through my whole life. My current one I found by investigating what choirs there were when I moved to where I live now, 10 years ago. During covid it has been periods with no rehearsals, but we have been singing a lot outdoors when the weather wasn't TO bad - on the topic of Swedes liking to be outside. :-)

Please correct me if I am wrong but I have a feeling that something close to allemansrätten exists in Scotland (not in England). Years ago when backpacking on the Hebrides we asked where we could put up our tent. The answer was (as long as you don't put it in somebody's potato patch...)
Yes it does, or very similar. I'm from Scotland (though now live in Sweden) and landowners there are required to have public pathways through their land. You can't get right up to their houses but they have to allow access to mountains, lochs, forests, and the coastline. I appreciate allemansrätten in Sweden but it's not so different from Scotland. I lived in England for a while and it was weird not having the same freedom to roam there.

One band i didnt see here is the In Flames, they are a metal music, they use Swedish music that we had old music as an ide for theys songs. it isnt like most metal music here, but they are good to listen to. no offence for the other metal music. we have so many metal band that we can listen to. Realy nice to have that.
I'm always kind of amused by the fact that the only two people who have written more US no1 songs than Max Martin are John Lennon and Paul McCartney.🙂

Allemansrätten is great, we do love our access to nature. However, it is not exclusive to Sweden. I think it is a right in Finland too: Finland was a part of Sweden for around 600 years and the freedom to roam nature is an old tradition.
Sweden has now passed the UK in music exports.
I believe couples get an extra 5% top up if they split the 480 days of parental leave precisely equal among themselves.
Just go listen to Sabaton and songs like Bismarck, Christmas truce, Final solution, amazing songs all of them.

Annifrid Lyngstad was born in Norway by a Norwegian mother and German father but during ww2 she went to Sweden with her maternal grandmother and changed her citizenship to Swedish so yes Abba is 100% Swedish because Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are all Swedish

Music has allways been apart of a thing seens Viking age for us.
As a Swede, grew up to know my father. I'm not looking to become a father myself, as I'm only 22, soon 23. I take my time to see where i really want to go in life. Love and money isn't anything i desire right now. And I'm a metalhead, and i listen a lot to the Swedish Melodic death metal band Amon Amarth. Only half of all metal bands i listen to is Swedish
When I was 23 I got my diploma except, I do not want to open my own business. I would much rather be an Eco- Blogger or freelance blogger and raise environmental awareness or document my language journey. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, it will take me longer to get that certificate in Digital & Social Media. I did want to travel after I graduated but with what money lol. Now, it's a bit of the opposite where I have money but things are in dire straits right now. I mostly listen to Finnish and German metal. Except Sabaton they are Swedish.

actually, you can't forage hazelnuts here in sweden, that is one of few exemptions in the allemansrätt, since long ago when the king owned everything..
i think there are one or two more excemtions..
but since swedes dosn't seem ti lika hazelnuts fresh, noone ever picks them.. so no biggie.
butwhen u see ppl from other parts of the world looting som strange tree/busch they are probably foraging hazelnuts, that you werent even aware that existed :)
my ex-wife explained this and actually showd me... i have never even thought about hazelnuts in the free here in sweden. perhaps beause its mor common in the southern parts och sweden... not where i live and grew up

@@kristofferhellstrom i lived in gothenburg and my ex wife showed me, i just thought that there were ordianry trees/bushes.. they are hard to spot, the nuts, easiest to check under it there are som on the ground.

a hint might be, if there are ppl comming from other origin, acting suspicius under bushes/trees... this is the most likely way to find them.. .cuz they know what to look for
Sweden has many smart people per capita.
I wouldn't pat them on the back about Max Martin being behind the homogenization of cookie cutter assembly line pop music. That's not something that Sweden is doing better, not that the country as a whole is responsible for the global music industry taking all creativity and quality out of modern music. That's a collaborative effort that has a lot of hands in it. I'm just saying that Max Martin being responsible for a massive output of same-sounding music is not a good thing, except for him. But that's okay, they've still got healthcare, clean water, low poverty rates, good education, etc. And also it's very, very clean and people hardly litter at all. And I like their beer better, it's not too hoppy.
Näää. The thing you say about the word fika is not true at all. It is just a slang word formed in about 1910 (Kaffe, turned into kaffi, and then "back slanged" into fika) and coffee was only outlawed in periods way way earlier than that, (1794-1796, 1799-1802 och 1817-1823).
