Vent windows were usually for the smokers. . . pulled the smoke outside quickly. My fully loaded 77 NYB has the vent windows and a sunroof for air. True boating pleasure.

I owned a '77 NYB without a sunroof! My ex-wife got it!...and WRECKED it (after MANY STUPID DRIVES!) These were GREAT OLD CARS!

My 1978 Gran Fury with the 400 did 8 mpg, but had beautiful gold brocade upholstery.

These C bodies can get better than 8 mpg, but in the city that is probably about right. They could have benefited from an overdrive for highway cruising. It weighs about 4,500 pounds, but a 2021 Dodge Challenger can weigh nearly that much. This class of Big Three big car are relative bargains for collector cars.
My Grandma had the 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco in this same color. All the lions & shields on the landau roof & seat fabric made it very classy.

@@theunskilledmechanic It really was. The headlight covers and tail lamps gave it more heft than the Monaco. Grandma had a ‘74 Cadillac Sedan de Ville before it and the Royal Monaco didn’t feel like a step down. Different. But not less, it felt.

had a green on green 4dr 400 4brl 77 Newport in Canada years ago. was the toughest car i ever owned. the vent windows are supposed to open that way. not to pull air in but to draw smoke out. remember this car was built when everyone smoked.

Had a 76 Chrysler Newport with a 440. Nice work the 440 was rated at 225 horse 345 ft lb torque the 400 was 190 horse and 320 ft lb in 1977
This car is in amazing condition. My folks drove C body Chryslers, so I learned to drive in them. Wish I could see one now.

You asked about the window vent being set in the wrong direction--it was not for air flow to the occupant--it was to allow cigarette smoke to be drawn out of the car when smoking.

I was in my early days of driving when this car was new. I would have wanted one, but 8MPG? I would've gone broke with gas around 95 cents/gallon by that time. Plus these things were a terror to park in urban areas. So they didn't sell very well, and there's less of 'em around today. I had a Dart and then a Volare, both with Slant Sixes.
Yes, that's still the case today unfortunately. It's not the cheapest to fill up. But for me, it's not miles per gallon, it's smiles per gallon :)... You can't beat a slant six!
This brings back some memories! I learned to drive on my dad's brand new "72 Newport. By 1977, It was mine with just 90,000 miles on the clock. The '72 was a pretty spartan car... ours had no A/C and no power conveniences. Powertrain then was the first year of the 400 V8, 2 BBL, low compression and 190 HP, the first year for SAE net ratings. It did have the trailer towing package, overkill for the 2000 lb. pop-up camper we had. The cooling, suspension, and alternator were all heavy duty, and the rear axle was a 3.23:1. That made it surprisingly quick for a smog motor... 0-60 in about 10 seconds. It would get 15-16 mpg on a hi-way trip at 70 mph or less. My mom kept meticulous financial records, and she figured that the average mpg for the first five years was ~11 mpg. I drove it another 46,000 miles and it still ran well. The next owner found out it was faster than the chassis could handle and wrapped it around a tree. ☹
Chrysler was a year later than planned when the '74 big cars launched. Timing could not have been worse... the Arab oil embargo was in the fall of 1973. The Imperial was dropped after '75, the New Yorker inherited its wardrobe, and Newport moved upscale, looking like the New Yorker of '74-75. I remember driving a rented Monaco in '74, and those last generation big Mopars were much more refined than the "Fuselage' generation cars before them. If your Newport were mine, I would remove every bit of the Lean Burn system including the thermo-quad pack it up neatly in a box and leave it in the trunk for the history buffs. Find a good dual plane aftermarket manifold, an aftermarket 4 BBL and an electronic distributor, and wake that puppy up with a good tune. Enjoy your time capsule young man!

You do a fantastic job on describing this Chrysler in detail. The part where you kicked it down in passing gear reminded me of my 400 4 Barrel Cordoba I had- more bark than bite, but all cars were like that then. 👍👍

Once again it is so great seeing younger gentlemen like yourself having so much passion for large classic cars. A late Uncle of mine had a 1976 New Yorker, which took the place of the now defunct Imperial. It was a beautiful car with a silver body, burgundy vinyl top and interior. The 440 engine was very detuned and the 727 automatic shifted slow. Definitely a boulevard Cruiser, not like my other uncle's 1969 440 New Yorker. That car was a muscle car in disguise! We had quite a few C-body Chrysler products in our family. Looking forward to tons of adventures you share!
My dad had a ‘77 New Yorker hard top. I recall it as super quiet, comfortable and composed on the road.

I had a 77 New Yorker with the 400 Lean Burn Thermo Quad. Nice, quiet, smooth ride, but the Lean Burn was a buzz kill. You did very well with your purchase, very nice car!

Absolutely Beautiful looking machine. Beautiful color. You will probably never see another one in this condition. Beautiful. The vent window was actually for anyone who smoked, it would vent the smoke out, Lincoln Town cars and Cadillac also had something similar to this, back in the day, I am 52 years old so I definitely remember these beautiful machines, back when you could order, engine, color, interior style, shagg carpet, and so on. You are a very talented and lucky young man to have something like this time capsule. Please try and keep it as such. They are only original once. From Halifax Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦. I noticed this video because of the color! I owned a "77 Plymouth Gran Fury (same PISS YELLOW!) and, in spite of its' paint or workmanship, was a GREAT old car...BEST ASS-KICKING "FAMILY SEDAN" EVER!
A family friend had a '77 Newport when I was in high school in the late '70s. Beautiful car with a red body, white vinyl top, and plush red velor interior. I waxed it for them twice a year. It was an all day job since the car was so big. Didn't like the way the lower doors and rocker panel curved inward. Practically had to lie on the ground to wax them. But it was a smooth driving, quiet, roomy, comfortable car. Wish they made cars like that now but I am thankful for the better gas milage of modern cars
Sounds like it was a gorgeous car! I love the big land yachts too, but do appreciate the fuel efficiency of newer cars for daily driving.
Those are exactly the correct whitewalls. I'm a 67 year old dyed in the wool MOPAR guy and you got a deal of a lifetime. One of the most beautiful Chryslers of that period. Be sure you change the oil often and use synthetic, change coolant every two years, keep all the fluids clean and topped off and that 400 engine and TorqueFlight will take good of you.
You were at Carlisle, how did we miss you! Very nice. You should join us in the survivors tent. I suggest putting mud flaps behind those wheels, protect the paint down there.

You are right about the vent windows. The pivoting type are the most effective. My Lincolns and one Grand Marquis had power vents that went up and down with neat looks but they did not draw air flow. Another Grand Marquis had pivoting vents and they were powerful. They pivoted on center, the correct way with the rear edge outward.

I was 19, back in '77. Back then, Chrysler was in bad shape; 1978 was Chrysler's worst year, also their golden anniversary. You have what we old rust belters refer to as a Wednesday built car. It's worth keeping, take good care of it.

the color is Golden Fawn - my grandmother had a 74 New Yorker Brougham the same color - the first year this body style was introduced- the grille was slightly different but basically the same car
Your side windows are correct....they open out so debris doesn't come in....that model should have a set of chrome wheels with it because you are running base wheel covers and have a dealer #2 option package that's the steering wheel you have....you could buy these chassis until 83 or 84 but mileage mothballed them....I had a 78 LeBaron Medalion 31
I wonder if you could option it with the chrome wheels and the original owner just cheaped out and went with the steelies? I love the LeBaron’s too!

318 lean burn and no one wanted it because of mileage and lean burn... it never gave a problem and lean burn increased the mileage yours may not be woruking you should be at least 12 local Mopar 400s are very good....we also had a 76 Gran Fury 360 2brrl police and that was an attempt to make an efficient car and it did 14 and 21
Awesome c-body! Similar purchase story with my Charger. Got it for half of the asking price. Have owned it for 23 years; bought it with 27k miles, now has 49k. Wish I had the 400 but it’s a 318 and it’s fine. At least it gets decent fuel mileage.🙂

I have the upgraded version of that car, with full leather, 8-track, etc. Its in show room condition too. I have power windows and only 13.2k original miles.
nice C body. I've got my fathers 74 Fury II, 2 door HT, 400 2bbl, now with 40,000 miles. Those quarter windows don't swing out any farther? On our D150 they would swing about 135 degrees to pull air into the cabin.

It's a beautiful car. When I was a kid back in the 1980s😲 lol my mom had a 1976 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. The Newport if I remember correctly was higher trim model then the new yorker & yours looks like the base model without the power windows plusher seats and hideaway headlights. My mom's new yorker was loaded up with the all the options & tire skirts. I didn't know the Newport came in a base model. My mom bought her new yorker brand new in 76 but your car is in amazing shape true time capsule

Wow! My mother bought this car in 1977 at Champagne Chrysler which is now Kendall Toyota (Miami). They gave you a bottle of champagne with every purchase. I was too young to remember the name. We had the same color which was Champagne Gold and the same trim line with the Lean Burn but without the vinyl roof. I loved the royal looking hood ornament and the chrome bumpers and the way the gas cap was hidden behind the emblem! We had the same brocade upholstery. My mother could lay flat in the back seat with the doors closed.She sat on a pillow to see better while driving. My sister and I were taller by two inches. I was 18, your age, back in 1983, and I drove it to work and school. The AC stopped working which was rough in Miami. We got 9 miles to the gallon during the Energy Crisis of the late 70’s and early 80’s. I think you can relate. It became too expensive to repair even though we took care of it, so I bought myself a 1988Toyota Corolla (a college graduation present) which was reliable and had comfortable AC. 😂 I saw this same car online for sale in South Dakota. There can’t be too many of them left. It’s nice to see it in such great condition! Enjoy!🎉

Nice save. I agree those vent windows are pretty useless. Most true vent windows could be flipped around to capture the air ao it will.come in. Since yours are hinged with rubber. That will block incoming air. My parents bought a brand new 1962 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop. Fantastic car. It was both fast and handled fantastic, with eh torsion bar suspension. In 1977, they purchased a brand new 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with a 400 V-8. It was a slug compared to the 62 Newport, as well as our 72 Mercury Montego, with a 351 V-8. It is so great seeing someone young like you, appreciating the cars from back then. My twins are a few years older than you, and I dragged them to every car show imaginable. They like old cars, but they prefer the newer stuff. They do appreciate the old cars and want to add to their growing collection of cars.

Wow yours is so quiet... I just bought a 66 with a 383 and a three on the tree. There is definitely a lot more road and engine noise inside of my cabin.

I really don't think the young man realizes how incredibly rare to find a car like this in such absolutely brand new condition. I'ts like the twilight zone. Like it's only a few years old. Just unreal!
What a beautiful car and nothing like a good deal I paid $1800 for my 77 Cordoba and it was a one owner with 66.000 miles. Hope you enjoy it for a long time to come.

BTW the car weight is pretty high, about 6500lbs. About the same as a large SUV or even more.
This is a bit surreal to me, because I owned a 77 Chrysler Newport 4 door sedan. It was this same paint color (Golden Fawn), same color vinyl top, same color and style interior (brocade cloth and vinyl), it had that same 3 spoke steering wheel, same wheel covers, it had a 400 with Lean Burn and a 4 barrel carburetor, had a/c and cruise control, and had roll down windows. I cannot find anything different about your car and he car I owned except my car did not have vent windows. Your car is also in nicer condition. If you are 19 now, I owned this car at the time you were born. It was a very good riding and comfortable car. You said the handling is terrible - I thought it was very good compared to comparable Ford and GM products. I got 15 mpg highway, 10 around town, and 12 overall. I had intended to change out the Lean Burn for regular electronic ignition but I never did it. You need to keep this car out of the sun! You need to know this - if you do not, the hard plastic parts of the door panels and the interior will fade. This happened on my car, but it had well over 100,000 miles on it when I owned it, and it was not as well taken care of as this. The trunk is huge - I fit an entire glass patio table top in the trunk and could close the trunk! I can't believe you were at Carlisle last year and didn't see you - we walked through the C body section on the show field! I liked the car a lot. I enjoyed driving it. Even though it was such a large car, I never had any trouble driving it because I could see all 4 corners of the car easily. It rode great on the highway.

I got a '76 Valiant Custom (V8) for nothing; 88k miles, almost the same color combo. Luckily, I can modify it to what I want it to be and nobody will care- I have driven (2) A38 Darts, one a 318 the other a 360. I'm going to clone that package, but with some subtle factory interchange parts improvements. And a color change

My first car (didn't own it myself) was my Dad's '77 Newport 2-door 440. Man, it was really hard feeding that thing! Mine was maroon with maroon interior, but the seats weren't patterned or any cloth at all like yours, at least not that I remember anyway. I do seem to remember that it had (I really don't know what it's called) buttons indented into the leather, or maybe it was pleather lol. I had at least two under hood fires and a chronic vapor locking problem.
In the end, he took it back and put me in the '82 Gran Fury Police Interceptor. The still functional spotlights, wider tires and wheels with drilled out pov caps, and larger exhaust system all gave this thing away. For obvious reasons, it was de-lettered and the light bar and PA system were removed before it was retired and put on the auction block. The only thing I hated about it was that every time I drove it, traffic on all sides of me slowed down to exactly the speed limit, and not one MpH over. Yeah... I think Dad knew exactly what he was doing when he made this one my car lol. My little brother hated the car because, well... oink oink. He didn't quite grasp the concept or the coolness of having a police car like I did, which was just fine with me.
I see the problem with your vent windows... It doesn't look like they open as far as they should. They open in the correct direction, which turns out to be just right for flicking cigarette ash, but they're supposed to open a lot further and direct air into the cabin like you were thinking. These ones are kind of a waste as far as vent wings go. I don't believe mine had those, at least not that I remember.
Those fender mounted turn signal indicators are pretty cool. I don't remember them doing anything else but showing the driver that they were on and showing burnt out bulbs. I had a Sedan DeVille with those, but there were three of them in that one little housing. I remember one of them being amber to show the turn signals, the second one was blueish greenish to show you that the hi-beams were on, and I think the third was white for the lo-beams. All three also had the benefit of showing a burnt out bulb by just not lighting up at all. There were two more mounted on top and in the middle of the rear window, both of which were red. The one on the left flashed when the left signal was on, the right one did the same thing for that side. They both showed dim for the tail lights and lit up brighter for the brakes and turn signals, and they also indicated a burnt out bulb by not coming on at all. These indicators were all fiber optic, so no extra wiring with conventional electricity, and the indicators never burned out since they also weren't on a fuse, which also had the benefit of the test system itself never failing.
We had a 1975 Newport 4 door. The little hood mounted lights indicated right and left turn signals, but the driver’s side also illuminated/glowed when you mashed on the gas - showing you that you were being inefficient with your right foot.

Some of the floatiest cars were built in the later 70s and 80s IMHO. Maybe they were trying to overcome the total lack of power thanks to emissions and get people to focus on "smooth ride" as a sign of quality. At least everything I've driven from that era like a Marquis, Electra, Caddy, Town Car, 5th Av would almost sway its way down the road. On some if you get the front rotors to clamp down hard you'd swear you could dig a trench the dive was so bad LOL. But cruisers.
It would be interesting to know the whole history. If she lived mostly in Monongahela then she must've been parked 6-8 months out of every year.
Confusion on Lean Burn, I don't get why it's everyone's go to excuse........Lean Burn wasn't available on the Newport until 1977 and then only on the 400 and not in California or High Altitude States and it was an Option, you had to pay extra. It was on everything in 1978 for Chrysler

Awesome car. Thanks for sharing. We had a Newport in the '70s. Ours was brown exterior and yellow interior. Yikes! Full power option. No crank windows. I remember those smokers' windows which were designed to suck the smoke out while driving. Also great shooting of the video. See, Mrs. Wizard? That's how you shoot the interior of a car: not just extreme close-ups of the steering wheel and dashboard.

@@theunskilledmechanic We had two buttons on the floor. One, obviously, was for the high beams. Can you guess what the other was for?... To change the stations on the AM radio. You press the button with your foot and watch the radio knob spin to the next station preset. I don't know whether yours has the power bench seat or not. If it does, you must inspect the wiring harness under the driver's section. The harness wasn't secured properly at the factory so when the seat moves, it causes wearing on the wire coating. I know of one incident whereby the worn, bare wires allowed arching and caused a fire. Enjoy and be safe.

400 4bbl was standard in the Newport, 360 V8 was required in California to meet emissions standards.

Dont convert the AC to 134. You can still find R12 on market place pretty cheap per can. It will blow much colder AC if you use it.
Could you imagine, keeping it smooth idling cam-wise, but having that 400 stroked to 472 or 512 with a 440 Source stroker kit ?

Vent windows were a great feature as long as you were in the front seat. That back seat with no AC was awful.

77 Newport is a big car. I have a 70 Plymouth Sport Fury GT.. and it’s a big car, about 17 feet long. A 77 Newport is one foot longer.. right at about 19 feet long. It wouldn’t fit in my garage.
I used to have this car without the vinyl roof. I thought it measured 18 feet and weighed 4500 pounds. I’m glad to know that it was even longer!
WOW is that in mint shape. I got one in 94 with 400000 was not nearly that nice . Just a parts car these days.

The 400 is basically a large bore 383, detuned for smog regulations. The 400 responds well to basic mods. Relatively affordable stroker kits can increase the displacement quite a bit, add aftermarket heads to make the 400 quite a powerhouse. The 383 is one of my favorite classic v8s.
from the back and the sides its easy to confuse this thing for a Buick. But the front end and interior are chrysler

All the people complaining about the gargantuan size of the car have no issue with plunking down big bucks for a full size pickups or SUVs . Even the mid size pickups and SUV’s are bigger ad a bunch heavier than this car. Go put it on a scale and then compare it’s weight to all the highly popular cars, minivans, SUV, pickups and even mid size cars that everyone else has in their driveways. In many cases this car will be 500 to 2500 pounds lighter than all of todays cars and trucks.
The 400 v8 in this car is kind a sweat spot motor for this time. Not much horse power, put plenty of torque. This car is slow by todays standards because every thing now has double or triple the horsepower and 3 to 6 more gears in the transmission.
The lean burn carburetor is the beginning of computer controls and computer management. Remember, the first floppy drive IBM XT with the 8086 processor with only 360KB drive and 4 and 8 mhz clock speeds were still 3 years in the future. They first became available around 1980. And cost between $1,200 and $2,400. Plus printer and plus a dial up modem that ran around 350 kilobytes per minute. That lean burn technology was heady stuff back then.
