New York Gov. Hochul’s astounding recent decision to kill New York’s congestion pricing plan for Manhattan EXPLAINED. Transit Guy assesses who this pricing plan would actually impact (some 1.5% of commuters into Manhattan), the myriad exemptions ironed in, and the wide array of transit-infrastructure-related projects it would fun, also touching on the statistics behind Manhattan’s ongoing traffic crisis. Also, the new lawsuit from NYC Comptroller Brad Lander over this killing of myriad major MTA projects, and the unsurprising financial influences behind this fiasco.
Hayden Clarkin, also known as the Transit Guy on Twitter, to discuss New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent decision to delay congestion pricing.

Traffic in NYC sux. Parking sux. Hochul sux.
It has been terrible lately. There's too many cab drivers doing 15 mph because there's speed cameras everywhere and you can't take the MTA since theres always something happening and causing delays.
@@be4unvme you can take MTA, what are you talking about? There's too much traffic because there are too many cars.

"Why Does Kathy Hochul Hate New York City?"
She is from Buffalo, the first-ever governor not from downstate since Franklin Roosevelt of Dutchess County (Pataki's Westchester counts as downstate).
Even worse, shes from the racist suburbs of buffalo new york
Not to split hairs, but even Dutchess County is downstate IMO. Buffalo could not be further from where the VAST majority of people in the state live. It's nearly 400 miles from NYC - Go figure none of her decisions benefit downstate

Manhattan should be stripped of cars.
Corporations and small businesses all write off these toll expenses while simultaneously price gouging the public who can't write off those expenses.
You would think that transit being improved would benefit residents in other states. Does she think only New Yorkers sit in traffic? Everyone else teleports?
suburban boomers ruin everything
I'm surprised at how often that is literally true. You'd think at some point there would be some part of America suckage that they wouldn't have a hand in. And, almost every time, it's either them or the politician they preponderantly support committing some completely unforced error that makes life worse for everyone.
Wow why is the Transit guy so ridiculously handsome. And Smart. I stan.
70 elevators in 50 years lmao
My income is not high… I was just in the city visiting last week and the traffic took part of my soul… but I’d be very willing to pay a tax as an outsider and then transition to public transit for the cause…
my tip would be to avoid driving into lower manhattan an park your car 5 mins from a train and just head to the city that way
Why are we not recalling her?
I didn’t even know she was at war with us 😔
That congestion pricing money would’ve been a huge boon to the city
She's a Republican. Of course she's at war with NYC. The entire Republican Party has been at war with NYC (and all other cities) since at least 1980.
Its just car centric thinling so embedded that ANY retreat seems wrong and acary to them.
Their thinking is what caused the mess and now their thinong is preventing fixing the problems tbeir tbinking created
but we gotta subsidize our sports stadiums
65% of newyorkers oppose this tax. Call for a referendum and this money scheme for the MTA will be gone for good.
When pedestrians (people) are causing issues with their numbers (gatherings/crowds), cities go nuts and declare civil unrest and impose curfews etc. But when the same or worse happen with cars, it's like okay let's just make more room for them by taking away housing and sidewalks.
Transit in the US is such trash -- all over.
It's something I already knew, but after watching a lot of content from channels like Not Just Bikes it's become painfully obvious that it's ludicrously bad.
And in New York? Hmm, if only there was a group of people or legal entities considered people, who had great excesses of wealth. Well, you could reclaim some of that wealth they've taken from their workers, from tenants, and so on. Why, there's even the military budget -- I'm sorry, I meant police budget, don't know why I'd get those confused -- where enormous amount of money is directed and essentially lost.
With funds like that, we could have genuinely great inter-city and intra-city rail, as well as bicycle infrastructure and pedestrian safety. We could fix up some of the archaic and terrible zoning regulations that have required disgusting amounts of parking lots and limits on how efficient home construction can be -- and thereby reduce the vast distances between points of interest so that walking was far more feasible and enjoyable. Parking lots be gone! Reduce dependency on cars, which in turn would save the average person a _lot_ of money and reduce a lot of deaths, injuries, and health hazards.
And obviously anything sensible like that is not in the cards with the sort of for-the-billionaires politicians that are in charge of the majority of the country.
I honestly just don't get any of this LOL😂😂
Look for the money in the riders pockets not in the drivers who represent just a 9% of the influx of commuters who travel in Manhattan daily.
Why does Kathy hate anything? I know I'm seriously worried about her.
Liberalism is a cancer
Adam Fisher also made a video about this and it seems Hochul wants to tax New Yorker Businesses instead which would be more detrimental than the congestion pricing
i am in astoria i do not have a car... 1 because i don't want to deal with street cleaning... and moving the car.. 2 the cost of parking if i had to have a car.. rents are too high as is... the subway is kinda screwed but it usually works... i was annoyed as a mother with a stroller they redesigned and they did not add lifts... i lived in london when they put in the law... people were angry...

What they don't tell you is that they will reject your disability application out of hand and snail mail it to shorten your appeal window, because having a NY state handicap placard doesn't count within the boundaries of NYC.
Add on that it's routed through not the DOT, but the Access a Ride, after you acquire your NYC specific handicap placard, and I'm concerned that due to structural obstacles, disabled/low income folks won't realistically be exempt and get caught in the treads.
I agree with congestion pricing, it also needs serious auxiliary updates and supports to make it work smoothly.
The ADL told Hochul to do this THE DAY BEFORE.
Id say her days as NY Governor are numbered 🤷🏻♂️👎🏻🤦🏻♂️
Long Island Railroad is really good. Metro North from what I can remember was alright too (the one going through Yonkers). But NJ Transit is just god awful. NYC subway & buses are just making me want to buy a freakin motorcycle.
Thank god they stopped it!! Ppl that aren't from nyc love it but if u are from here it's not right
NJ Transit... it's funny to think it's glory days, for me, anyway, was in the late 90's to early 2010's. I use the NJCL and it became so unreliable at a certain point. I still use it sometimes, but it always feels like a gamble that I just have to deal with. It wasn't like that nearly as much when I was younger, and I used it way more then.
I hate being from one of the most highly desirable metropolitan areas in the world and having a declining public transportation system. I don't look forward to more car focused infrastructure. It ruins everything. It feels like people have given up in a way.
U guys helped her get power in 2021
How to manage NYC is kinda like the crisis in the Middle East. It just goes on and on and no one knows how to solve it. Maybe it should secede from NY state. All I know is that it’s as expensive as surgery to live there.
Interesting, but this could have been explained a lot more clearly.
Why has she not been removed.
Who are the idiots that voted for her? Or any Democrat for that matter 🤦🏽♂️
They can't find anyone less corrupt.
It's very confusing to hear someone say trans so much in 2024 and it not be about me lmao
Serious question, let’s see how people answer this.
Let’s say you’re a family of 3 or 4 and you own a car and you live in the congestion pricing zone, what happens to you? Are you supposed to pay $15 every time you drive uptown ? Let’s say you have to use your car to work, you have to haul lots of things for your job and a car is the only way to do that effectively and your job is in Long Island City, is it fair that you should taxed $15 additional dollars on top of the tunnel tolls you are already paying? And if you do this 3 or 4 times in a week by the end of a month, you could be paying as much as $300 to nearly $400 a month just to use your car.
Does anyone think that’s sustainable?
I know the argument Emma likes to make , the “westchester executive who drives his luxury car into Manhattan everyday” and she uses it because it , to be honest is how she was raised and it aligns with her social class worldview, but is that who is really going to feel this tax? Probably not. The people who are going to feel it the most are the families who live in the congestion zone what do you say to them?
Should they just “move” pull their kids out of school and uproot their lives and desert their way of life because Emma has something against a douchbag executive who drives a 2024 midlife crisis?
What is the solution for the families with cars who live in the congestion zone?
@@Ampacityelectric you’re very wrong. Lots of moderate and low income families live in lower Manhattan.
Carless households are those with lower incomes especially in Manhattan. You're arguing for someone who doesn't exist.
@@DerryckStorm ok, you obviously don’t know anything about NYC or the people who live in lower Manhattan. I live on the lower east side of Manhattan and it’s a working class family neighborhood and we aren’t “careless”. We are hard working middle class families . This tax would be the classic punching yourself in the face move that Democrats always do when it comes to messaging and governing to the middle class. Lower Manhattan is the strongest Democratic district in all of New York State and the congestion tax was a good idea, IF , residents of the zone were exempted. But Hochul and the Ny Democratic machine didn’t think about that and it was a strong pushback from the residents of lower Manhattan that gave her pause. Trust me, nobody with a car in lower Manhattan thought this tax was a good idea.
Nobody in NYC with any experience believes for a second that this money would have gone to upgrading the subway system. I’ve lived in NYC for 35 years and every time there is a fare hike or a new tax they ALWAYS say it was going to “upgrade and improve the subway system” and it never went to improvements that made any difference. The MTA is a monopoly in NYC they have no real competition. They draw in billions every year and where does it go? It goes into fat pensions for MTA employees and lines the pockets of the politicians and lobbyists.
Emma is so sweet, she actually believes that she is backing a new idea, but this holding a carrot out while robbing you is as old as NYC itself. What Hochul has done is she saved true believers like Emma from having a ton of egg on their faces when this tax would have gone in effect , the district would have rebelled against Hochul and the democrats, possibly losing to republicans, and the subway system would still be the sub standard mess that it’s always been.
Does any one trust how nyc would actually dispense the money? The lottery tax, cigarette tax, was all supposed to go to schools but were did it go again?
Kathy Hochul should make NYC like Buffalo. Pave all of the neighborhoods with giant parking lots and have expansive overpasses with 10 lanes go into the downtown. Scuttle the MTA since it drains resources for car infrastructure for New Jersey, Westchester and Long island residents.
Guess you hate New Yorkers then? You’ve never rode the subway?
There are more people surrounding NYC than in NYC. It costs a ton to take the train compared to the subway, give me a break.
Hochul looks likeca Disney villain. What's with the eyebrows? Can't we primary her?
I love public transport. We need more, better. NM is awful.
NYC MTA has an opaque budget! Make the books public so we know how much money is spent on tunneling and where.
The efficiency of the MTA is dogshit but they do publish financial statements and the budget is absolutely public.
It has been a giant political slush fund since the days of Robert Moses.
The problem is. I am one of those people that you’re just shrugging off. I moved away from the city due to getting priced out. I found a cheap place, that I can afford in orange county NY, and drive into the city every day due to necessity. I don’t have a job where I get the option to work from home. The congestion pricing was going to hit my family hard, and I find the downplaying of the negative effects this will have on people like me absolutely infuriating. I love NY city, but the rent is out of control. And your subway system should be paid for by those who use it. I do not have a realistic commute using public transportation, and until there is one, congestion pricing will cripple my family
The implication should be obvious that you yourself are screwing other working class people by driving into NYC. The additional traffic and degraded air quality and not to mention the parking taken away from tax paying CURRENT not FORMER New Yorkers. Additionally it makes disability services and emergency services far more challenging and compromises the safety and security of everyone in New York City.
You can transfer to public transit just outside the CBD. No one is above using the train or bus.
So instead of paying for the externalities you impose on others by driving in lower Manhattan you want New Yorkers to pay for the suburbs' commuter trains that they don't use instead.
It's sooo funny that yall don't just push for highers taxes on the rich and corporations. Its public infrastructure it should be free for us for people. Or redirect finding from the NYPD or other entities. Everyone that hates on people for owning a car. Makes me laugh but also is just annoying. Congestion pricing should never have implemented in the first place. The government spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year on endless wars instead of improving infrastructure. So instead they foot the bill on citizens to pay for Congestion pricing.
Lol. Since when does city services charges/tax goes to funding wars?.
What? State and local money doesn't go towards the military. Also we want people to have to pay to bring their two ton vehicle into the densest part of the country. If we don't there will be too many people driving into the city instead of just taking the subway.
Damn right.
@@kevley26bro people don't want to take the subway and trains. They are shitholes. Lived next to the one in Mpls and god damn was it just nasty and dangerous.
Increase MTA prices for upgrades. The people who take public transit get the benefits of improved infrastructure so they should pay for it.
If you increase prices on public transport, it can have the opposite effect and increase car use. The benefits of a congestion charge are to create an incentive to use public transport over a vehicle and therefore reduce traffic and raise funds to upgrade/maintain the system through both the congestion charge and the increased usage of the public transit system.
Politicians use tax paying and law abiding citizens with congestion pricing and speed cameras on every corner.

To be honest, this plan was going to shift a lot of traffic to the George Washington bridge to the Triboro bridge and while I’m not against congestion pricing, this specific plan would’ve been disastrous for people who live in New Jersey and work in Long Island or people who live in New Jersey and work in Westchester etc. etc.
Did you read the EIR? It’s not that bad. Also, NJ is building a $8B highway widening that will put 22k cars in a handful of streets of manhattan daily. They do not give a fuck. This will lower vehicle miles traveled in the region, lower pollution in the region, etc. Will some areas have traffic go up by 1-5%, sure, but it’s a small price to pay for the insane benefits.
This doesn't really account for how much rideshare traffic there is in Manhattan. It's not people commuting in. There are people coming in for business and leisure but a big chunk is non-taxi rideshare.
Also, not mentioned is the issue and impact on business in transit poor areas of Manhattan, Chinatown is a notable example. It's a decent walk from any Subway and so many people from the other boroughs and NJ that frequent those businesses ALL DRIVE. Instead of Chinatown, I'm going to Flushing. The NJ to NYC accessibility is not good. It was built on accessibility for cars and buses and Port Authority Terminal is absolute garbage.
Wtf are you talking about? There are 8 subway services that go to Chinatown directly and 6 more within a quarter mile. I really don’t think that most people drive to Chinatown? Where are they parking??? Maybe you drive, but I would bet that at least 90% of customers walk or take transit.
get out if you want the congestion pricing!!
She represents the whole of new york state as governor...
Yes and?
Yes and the MTA subway, rail, and bus, which critically needs the kind of funding congestion pricing would provide, services the area of the state where the vast majority of people live.
It’s ok. I hate NYC too.
To suggest that Murphy should just “… fix it” regarding NJ highways, but not offer that same suggestion to the MTA’s decades long mismanagement is irresponsible “journalism” or opinion. Drivers already pay astronomical tolls, and have been for decades. Besides, every tri-state area cell phone subscriber already pays an MTA fee EVERY billing cycle whether they use the MTA or not.
Hey Emma please don’t say handicap. accessibility by itself is fine:)
This ignores a bigger problem. Accountability for the money the government has and will spend. This shouldn’t be necessary if governments were held financially accountable
Being born , raised an living in New York City for 42 years of my life I can tell you one thing. More than enough money (Billions of dollars) is pumped into the MTA subway system. This is not true. The subway was so much worse in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and it can go back to being that bad. The subway is massive and it costs a lot of money to run. The MTA has $1.5T of assets. 3% annually of that is $50B. Shit costs money to fix.

There are a lot of people who can't afford to stay in NYC like retiring grandmother's and they move to the mid Hudson valley and their kids or vice versa need to commute to see family and friends, myself being one of them and just the tolls and parking already is easily over $100 already. It's also terrible for tourism, if I was traveling to another country and I was being charged extra to go to specific places I would just avoid them. I would like to see a massive update in public transit but I my opinion the car culture in the us is going no where. I think we need large public parking on the putter rims of NY so people who are commuting can park and then take public transit inside NY, cabs etc.
I agree 100% make public transit better but don't punish car owners. Honestly inr if my favorite things about America is the car culture and that we make everything arround it. Get rid of all the extra taxes on owning a avrage car. Raise taxes on commercial business that use roads (trucking and logistics companies) and corporations in all and the rich and fund it that way. Screw your 15 minute city. Drivers should have the freedom to travel.
I don’t care if you ride a bike or take the train/bus. You shouldn’t care about my driving.
And it seems most people who “hate” driving just can’t afford to own a car in the first place.
A car shouldn’t be required to live a life of dignity.
@@jalavelaWhat the heck does that even mean? Your means of transportation are tied to your dignity?
Living a life of dignity is your own doing. If you don’t feel “dignified” because you don’t have a car, that doesn’t mean you should impose your will on others and tax people who do.
Enjoy your public transportation. Let others enjoy their car. Pretty simple.
It was in response to your comment that people who hate cars “can’t afford them in the first place.”
I am saying that the ability to live a full life, travel from A to B, should not depend on whether you own a car.
Hochul saw the writing on the wall. Either surrender or we'll flip the state Red.
Well, we're going to flip the state Red either way so it's a win win for the common man.
Lol, only someone dumb enough to think the Repubelican party gives a solitary sh't for the common man is dumb enough to claim that NY will be flipped red
no, that's a win for some petty trashy incel men, common is a few steps above the right wing.
yes because republicans are known for supporting public transportation 😂
Free mustache rides anyone?
Kathy Hochul needs to be arrested and thrown in a jail cell
