    1st Element: Maitri 慈 (Goodwill) By loving you, you still retain your freedom.
    2nd Element: Karuna 悲 (Compassion) The capacity to understand the suffering, you are like the doctor, you don't have to suffer, help them not to suffer.
    3rd Element: Mudita 喜 (Sympathetic joy) The joy that is shared by both of you. Be able to offer joy in your relationship.
    4th Element: Upeksa 捨 (Equanimity) None discriminational love.

      maitri. not maitu. It's related to the word 'mitra'.

      I have been in a marriage for 31 years where these four elements were only one-sided. I finally found the courage to walk away. These elements are vital in identifying the relationship from the beginning.
      Thank you Thich for your teachings. I feel privileged to have been introduced to them even though I am already 67. Even after you have now left this life you bring joy to hearts like mine. You live on...

    Today I discover the word non-discrimination. If all religions are taught non-discrimination like Buddhism, there will be less disputes and wars in this world.

    • @sehrish1079
      @sehrish1079 4 роки тому +2

      All religions do taught non-discremination but,followers make it discreminating for their own benefits.

    • @truth8307
      @truth8307 4 роки тому +5

      @@sehrish1079 are you sure ? Christianity taught their god is the only true god, also all mighty and the creator. Also written clearly in the Bible under Mark's words that non-followers be condemned. This is discriminating to others as well as being extreme. So don't blame their followers, just blame the religion.

    I was born, raised and educated in a Buddhism ‘s culture, but no one has been able to explain this teaching to me in an understandable way although everyone references this teaching everyday. In fact, this true love called: Brahmahihara.

    This is a wonderfully deep teaching. The 4th element, equanimity, is explained in an exceptionally clear manner. More recently, I have heard Brother Spirit mentioning the concept of "Radical Love" which is, from what I understand, another way of explaining equanimity, non-discriminational love.
    "When your heart becomes immense, you can accept everything...but in the case you have a big heart that can include everyone, every living being, you do not suffer anymore". Thank you dearest Teacher, beautifully explained and SO TRUE! Marco

    Friendship such that you and the one you love feels free. Capacity to be able to see and transform suffering. Compassion is not having to suffer with ...it's understanding and presence that warms, bring and shares joy. Total equanimity. Enlarge your heart. Be a river. Love is infinite and inclusive.

    As I've touched my own deep suffering and discovered its deep origins, it has transformed me. I now have such a deeper capacity to understand suffering. Not all the time as I'm still a student of practice. As Thay says, although not in this video, you must touch ALL of life, which includes suffering. My mind is better able to accept, understand and apply what he says. I'm very grateful for understanding, for his continuation of teachings as I circle back to understand more.

    Many people that hurt others never had true love as children or they were never shown how to express it correctly or they lost their parents prematurely. There is also bad luck (wrong place, wrong time, wrong mindset, or even just ignorance). Very few people are evil!

    You should be able to identify that suffering and difficulty and try to help remove it and the capacity of removing it is called compassion...
    The greater your understanding of your loved ones, the more flexible and tolerant, the more compassionate you can be. You feel love and compassion towards others because you understand them, and you understand others because you have understood yourself. When you have learned compassion for yourself, compassion for others is automatic.

    The question is How can a person remove a friend pr anyones own suffering? What if they do not see they are suffering? Is not jiust better to walk away? Bless them and move on? We are all suffering. Some worst then other but still how can we help others remove theirs? I doubt I will get an answer but jist a like comment....These ideas are beautiful but do they really work in the real world? I love Thick but he was pne of the best monks ever.
    But I can't help but think he lived a monastary life..For thr lay people who work amongst co workers, friends or have family that have exteme difficulties I really wonder how well these teachings really work..Their is a term called idiot compassion..The person keeps putting up with someone's suffering only to be verbally abused and.or phyiscal abused.
