Interesting thing about steampunk it's based on what the Victorians viewed the future would be like. Hence why it's a big part of Oamaru. I would also suggest checking out whitestone city and the gun emplacement walk which is up by the lookout. Bushy beach is also pretty interesting
Hey!!! Wow that museum looked cool!!!! Creepy but cool!!! That place is nuts!! 😂🤣 Those boulders look mental!!! 😂🤣😂 I love Hannah’s penguin impersonation- hilarious!!! So chuffed you got to see the seals and penguins!!! Thanks for taking us along!!! 🥰🥰
As someone who grew up in Oamaru, there was so much of this that I didn’t know about! Have never visited the steampunk museum, or seen the Little Blue Penguins, and I didn’t know you can find hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) in Kaitiaki. Although I do know that Shag Point, at the other end of the beach, is a good place to view seals (yes, feel free to snigger at the name). Like they say, you never do the tourist things in your own town. And when I grew up in the 1980s the harbourside precinct was derelict, we actually laughed at the idea of ever attracting tourists.
I know right?? Since coming back to the UK we've realised that there's quite a bit to do in our hometowns that we took for granted when we were there before. It's wild how things can change
I love Oamaru. Especially cool if you can get there during the Victorian festival in November. They have pennyfarthing bike races through the historic quarter
*Hannah & Tom, another great video showcasing Aotearoa New Zealand. Plus you got to see the Steampunk capital of NZ in Oamaru.... as well as seeing the seals and to see the world's rarest yellow eyed penguins up close in their own habitat too. PS: Steampunk is also well known in South Auckland as well.*
Hi from Christchurch. Oamaru is great. We were there for a few days last year. Loved the old part of town and the steampunk museum was amazing and weird, So much fun to look through. The botanical gardens are lovely to walk through, especially in the spring and summertime. We saw a lot of seals but not the yellow eyed penguins unfortunately. We also travelled down to Dunedin and went to Larnach Castle. Worth a look if you like old buildings and a bit of history. Enjoy your travels. .
The steampunk museum may be the weirdest and coolest museum we've been to! It was great to really interact with everything. Not every museum does that! We did go to Dunedin but didn't manage to go to Larnach Castle. We might have to try and head back
I bet you had weird dreams that night after visiting the steampunk museum! But the penguins were amazing and definitely worth waiting around for. Fab video. Have a great weekend all! xx
Right? We just booked it because it was on the way to Dunedin, didn't really expect much but it really delivered! Yeah the steampunk museum is definitely an experience 😂
Wonderful and fantastic tour.. Amazing ocean views.. Amazing nature views.. Just outstanding performance dear friend👍👍 🌸
Thank you!

Hannah's Penguin impersonation was great 😂
The boulders are called concretions, there's a few dotted around NZ!

Dreams of alien invaders and weird trains! 👽
Oamaru is such a hidden gem of NZ!
But that steampunk museum is so weird!
Right? We just booked it because it was on the way to Dunedin, didn't really expect much but it really delivered!
Yeah the steampunk museum is definitely an experience 😂
The Maori name for them is Hoi Ho, which describes the sound you heard.
That's really cool to know! Thank you!
Hi guys, never new this place, museum that is , existed
Cheers for this
Hey there! Neither did we until we arrived in the town! It's an absolutely wild experience, well worth a visit!
Never thought we'd be putting penguins and steampunk in the same video 😂
Who'd have thunk eh?
Very nice
Thank you!
37 minutes away from oamaru.
Don't know for sure...
But - suspect the reason that seals and penguins are in the same area - is because - seals eat penguins...?
That's what we were worried about as well! 😱😱
No they don’t eat the penguins.
Seals, Penguins ... and Cows. And a beach with spherical bolders. NZ is a silly place.
It's got everything!
