This movie pulled on my heartstrings, allowed me to relate to Riley in a way very few pieces of media have been able to do, and allowed me to reflect on myself too. The portrayal of Anxiety feels so real and personal, how they portrayed every aspect of anxiety both good and bad was something I still relate too till this day. God I love this movie so much.

I saw this yesterday with my twin sister and parents on Father’s Day and it did not disappoint. This is easily one one of the best Pixar movies of the 2020s and a worthy follow-up to the original (even though “Luca”, “Turning Red”, and “Elemental” were good. Objectively, “Luca” is still my favorite Pixar movie. “Soul” was just okay to me (hot take)).
SPOILERS: I LOVED how they depicted the panic attack at the end. From Riley’s heavy breathing, fast heartbeat, and her thinking that “she’s not good enough” to Anxiety literally looking like a tornado around the console with her visage frozen in terror. It was all so well done. For anyone who has ever had a panic attack (myself included with my autism and OCD), this hits close to home.
Also, the new emotions were great additions with Anxiety being the star and Maya Hawke’s terrific performance. Ennui is my second favorite new emotion with her blasé attitude and French accent. Embarrassment is my third favorite with his sweatshirt covering his face and his nose sticking out. All in all, great movie.

  • @shapesnatch1341
    @shapesnatch1341 8 днів тому +2

Having now see the movie (Through completely legal means obviously), I do have a lot of thoughts about it. I really love the first Inside Out, even though it's not a perfect movie by any stretch, I still love it. It has so much heart that is often missing in a lot of movies nowadays (It came out 9 years ago wtf am I talking about nowadays lol). So when a sequel was announced, I was hesitant. For so long, it stood as one of the few (Good) Pixar movies that did not get a sequel, despite the concept actually having a huge amount of potential for sequels, unlike others. Spoilers from here on I guess.
One thing I was not particularly happy about was the idea of Riley gaining new emotions. It was pretty set that everyone has the core five and that's it. As you age, your emotions begin to mix together, representing more complicated feelings. Another detail that I love about the first film, is inside the mam and dad's head, their emotions all look like the person themselves, and they all sit at a big control table where everyone has a seat. Not only that, all of their emotions are much more uniform and work together, becasue they're adults. They've found who they are, and as such, their emotions all look like them to represent that. Then in RIley's head, who was 11 at the time, each emtion has to kind of butt in to use the control table, because she's a kid with less emotional maturity. But now in the second film, 4 new emotions all appear. Now listen, kids can get embaressed, kids can be anxious, kids can be bored and kids can be envious. These are not new feelings that appear when you turn 13. I really don't want to get into the discussion about weather this was a good decision or not or weather it makes sence or not. I'll just say, I do not like the retcon, but it's here now so let's leave it there. In terms of the new emotions, I actually like most of them. I love Embarrassments design, and Anxiety's is good too. I would say that Envy really doesn't seem all that envious. She should have been louder and angrier. And then Ennui is... okay I guess.
One massive improvement this film has over the first is Riley herself. As was put by LS Mark in his review of the first film, it came across like the emotions were piloting a mech. She really didn't feel like a character so much as a plot device, to me at least. This is all changed in the sequel. Firstly, I love her new design. As much as you could say that for an animated character it would be easy to age them, there can be the little quirks and details about said character that make them that character. You can still absolutely tell that it's the same character from the first movie, just a little older. I especially love the braces for no other reason than that I find them kind of funny (Sorry to anyone who wear braces lmao). Given the new core belief system that was created, it helped to turn Riley into her own character. It's like she has subconcious thoughts that manifest through her actions, as we see by the end of the film where she appologies to her friends without anyone touching the control panel. Now it feels much more like the emotions are guiding her actions, rather than being soley responsible for them. Another element of this that works very well for the film is the fact that Riley is a girl. Now I can't speak from direct experience being a guy, but I don't think it's a reach to say that Puberty is considerably more intense for girls than boys. Not only the biological aspect, but the social side too. Girls are far more cliquey than boys and far more judgemental (If you disagree with that, I'll respect your decision but you are objectively wrong). Couple that with the social expectations that a lot of girls face (look a certain way, act a certain way etc.) means that her intense mood swings feel a lot more true to life than if she was a boy for example. I even think this was somewhat hinted about in the first film and the short film, Riley's Date. When we see into Jordan's head, his emotion guys are just dicking around. Not only that, they all look like him. This seems to be the movie adressing the reality that girls have more complex emtions than boys, which I think most people would agree is very true.
Comment was too long. See part 2 in the comments lol.

I also want to talk about the ending. The ending of Inside Out 1 is very iconic and extremely moving. The whole film is a metaphor for depression, put in such a way that kids can understand and parents can appreciate. The lesson that you need to be sad sometimes is so important for not just kids, but for everyone to learn. There is no light without darkness and vice versa. The sequel tried to live up to that climax, but it really doesn't hit the same high. Not to say that it's bad, it was just a high bar to get over. The lesson that Joy learns, that she was trying to force Riley to be someone that she wasn't, exactly what Anxiety was doing, was very clever, and again pushing that Riley is her own person with beliefs founded on her lived experiences, good and bad. Allowing the wave of bad memories to also have a part in forming Riley's new belief is also a very important lesson. Everyone tries to be a good person, but we are not always. We all get angry, sad, afraid, disgusted, embarrassed, envious, bored and anxious. Our beliefs and who we are are not all just good things. The whole ending where Riley has to sit in the timeout chair and has a panic attack was quite moving. Anxiety is trying to do everything to complete her goal, but it's just not working, which leads to more anxiety, which leads to more stress and the cycle keeps going. It felt reminisant of Puss' panic attack from Puss in Boots 2, which was also extremely well done. Anxiety screaming "You have to score Riley!" all the while "I'm not good enough!" echos through her mind hit me a bit harder than I would care to admit. I've never suffered from depression or anxiety to any even mild extent, but that doesn't mean I can feel for those who do. Since the sequel put so much more into Riley as a character, you really do feel for her as she's clutching her heart and hyperventilating, not knowing what to do or what's going on, especially since we know that Anxiety is not doing any of this out of malice, but because she's trying everything to do what she thinks is best for Riley. It was only during a moment of clarity that Riley's real self came through. Joy lets go of the idiolised version of Riley that she had been clinging to all movie that had been hamstringing her and building up a wave of bad memories that would all come flooding back some day. She needed to feel everything to process what was going on, which is another thing kids need to understand. The first movie taught us that we need to feel sad sometimes, and the sequel taught us that we need to feel everything, a good lesson that builds upon what came before.
The last thing I feel is worth delving into is probably one of my favourite lines from any film I've seen in a long time:
      "You okay?"
      "Yeah, I mean... no."
Seems simple on the surface, but it really cuts deep. Joy had been lying to Riley essentially, only letting her build her beliefs based on good things. Teaching her that she has to be the best person she can possibly be. A nice thought, but as we've gone over, not true to life. Anxiety then did the same thing. Cultivating new beliefs based on fears for the future, both likely and unlikely. This eventually manifested into "I'm not good enough!". Notice how surprised Anxiety is when this is what Riley's subconcious manifests as. Years of trying to make herself into a perfect person being suddenly merged with overwhelming anxiety all were concentrated down into "I'm not good enough!". And the sad part is, for most people, that is true. We could all be doing better. I could be doing something productive, but rather I'm in bed tapping away on a keyboard. Only once the emotions stop trying to control who Riley is does her real self come out, and the first thing she says, no longer lying to herself is "Yeah, I mean... no.". She tells her friends that she's not okay. She tells them that she was afraid, that she was not a good friend and accepts that they may not want to be friends with her anymore. The irony is that it was her anxiety that was pushing her friends away, so once she finally can be herself, not controlled by her anxiety, her friends come right back to her. Real life is rarely that simple, and sometimes you do lose friends, which they delved into in the first film. However, being open and honest with the people you care about is the next step after finally being honest with yourself. The message appears to be that you need to be yourself, not an a perfect version of yourself, because there is no perfect version of yourself.
Another slightly more controversial topic, it was nice to watch a film that had absolutely no political or devisive undertones, comments or messages whatsoever. It stays the hell away from devisive politics and I really think that that is seriously a good thing. It's probably also a reason why the movie is doing so well. Parents can trust that the film is not going to be preaching to them or their children, on either side of the spectrum.
Overall, it's a good movie. I don't like the retcons as a matter of principle, but it would be dishonest to then say that the movie has no merit because of this alone. I still think the first is better, but I can finally say for the first time in years, that I liked a new Disney movie. I'll even go so far as to say that if they keep up this level of quality, I'd be excited for a thrid movie. Now, where do you go from there? That's a bit tricky. If they aged her up again to say, 15, they reach the point where all of the things going on in your mind, really are not always appropriate for children. If they kept it very sterile and kid friendly, it could lose a lot of the impact that dealing with the later stages of puberty could have. If they made a ballsey move and made a 12s (we don't use PG13 over here) rated animated movie that follows her into her mid teenage years, I would have serious respect for the filmakers, but that is absolutely not going to happen. I reckon they'll do a more direct sequel, which is okay I guess.
But if they do, the mam and dad need way more screen time. Their emotions were hilarious and they need to come back more.
Anyway, if you've made it this far, thanks for ready and I hope you took something away from what I had to say.

I saw it yesterday, and I plan on seeing it again with my mom, who was feeling hesitant to seeing it. Trust me - I convinced her in the most non-spoilery manner! If anything, kids, teens AND adults will feel something relatable during this film... so it should seen by everyone. It definitely felt that way to me, that's for sure... but overall, it was such an emotional film that deserves attention & praise.
Also, I love how both Inside Out films have "antagonists" instead of "villains". That was a step in the right direction, and I still prefer films that go in this direction. Not every story has to have a "evil character", but someone could have "intentions that could be considered as evil or bad", which is completely different.

Perhaps anxiety isn't NECESSARY but it's unfortunately a way of life, same as emotions like envy, they kinda just spawn.
Anxiety is an emotion that everyone has because everyone gets anxious, it only becomes a DISORDER when it basically takes control of a person's life to the point that it's difficult to function. Even those without anxiety will experience their biggest lows in a way Riley has due to it, but of course a condition is much more serious like you mentioned. Anxiety is also different for everyone and each emotion in Inside Out is represented as multi-faceted to kinda "make up" for that fact in the form of characterizing the emotions. Ie. Joy in the first AND a bit of the second movie tends to veer into toxic positivity in some shape or form, anxiety actually proves that they're capable of hatching great plans, but they're so impulsive, persistent, and focused on the negatives that they cause Riley to break down.
Anxiety was still very much a villain as she literally embedded negative thoughts into Riley against others' wishes, she was just multi-faceted and truly believes she was helping/protecting Riley from "failure" (hence the "I'm not good enough") Even at the end of the movie, she hasn't really changed her tendencies, more so they're taking the steps to try to manage her better and keep her from going out of control.

Almost unrelated to this review, but, Bob Iger needs to step down as CEO of Disney permanently this time. Because it's clear that he's served for way too long as CEO, and he's been making some pretty bad decisions recently, especially with live action remakes. Similar to Michael Eisner in the mid-2000s, while he did have success previously, he made so many bad decisions, especially with the animation department, and so, it was clear he needed to resign, and after a long petition from Roy Jr., he eventually did. I think Bob Iger needs to do the same thing, and maybe Abigail Disney should start another "Save Disney" campaign like her dad did twice, which successfully got rid of Ron Miller and Mike Eisner. As for who I would pick as CEO if I had the choice, I'd go with Pete Doctor. Because, incase you don't know, Inside Out was originally a completely different film, known as Newt, which was just Blue Sky's Rio, but instead of birds, it stars salamanders, but, because it was likely to be a generic film, it was altered and reworked into a different concept, known as Inside Out. I could see him doing the same thing for all of the live action remakes, he could take them and throw them in the bin and say "I have a better idea with this concept." Now, once Iger does step down (Which he will, careers and lives don't last forever.) I doubt he will pick Pete as his successor, but, it would be the best case scenario for Disney.
