  • Because Ray Roberts and Lake Lavon were both flooded and the boat ramps are closed, I decided to try catching bluegills in some local ponds here in Plano. The bluegills in these ponds are very small. That is why I decided to get some #8 hooks instead of the normal #4 hooks that I use for crappie. These hooks have 1/32 oz weights which is perfect for shallow ponds. But if you take these jigs to a lake and want to fish 15 to 20 feet down, you will need to add additional weighs to the line.
I did try this jig for catching bluegills, but did not have much luck. The pond I went to used to have bluegills but not now. I tried hotdog pieces which has always caught them in the past with no luck. So I'm thinking they aren't there.
This hand tied bluegill jig is made with a #8 sickle hook, Orange Crush chenille, and Light Rootbeer neck hackle.
