  • Part 12 of Everyday Everest, my new Podcast series, drops today with chapters 37, 38, and 38. I'll continue my annual coverage as usual.
Based on my 2020 Virtual Everest series, Everyday Everest follows a FICTIONAL team of nine climbers and their personal Sherpas from leaving home to trekking to base camp, acclimatizing, and finally, on their summit push, returning home. I'll have a twenty-minute episode a few times weekly for the next two months.
In Part 12, our protagonist, Harper was confident and ready to get going. Sitting around base camp, even with the occasional hike to Pumori or Gorak Shep, was getting old. The conversation around the dining table was also getting old. It was time.
    Climb On!

I imagine the last phone call home before the summit attempt would be pretty emotional.

I'm sorry to hear about your in-law, but I'm glad you're alright. I was worried for a bit and even checked your website and googled your name to make sure nothing bad had happened. The Harper updates were flowing strongly with routine weekend Everest updates as well and then nothing all of a sudden. I'm glad you and Harper are back.
I've been following Ryan's updates on UA-cam, too. It's very interesting to actually see the daily life of a climber in almost real time. The future is still unknown. That makes it very exciting!
You know, I kind of figured that Harper is going to summit, no broken legs, no back flips unnecessarily, no sprained ankles. A standard summit but still, any summit is exciting. But Ryan, he's young ... who knows what's going to happen and he's a real person.
I'm particularly enjoying this season. This is the first season that I've attempted to keep up to date on a daily basis with what's happening on Everest.
Your timing with Everyday Everest is perfect! It's almost like Harper is actually there this season. And watching Ryan experience Everest for the first time, almost in real time, is awesome! And your weekend updates ... that's like my Everest Sunday Times Newspaper. I love it!
Today, after work, I turned on the live webcam of Everest base camp. It said it was 4:45 am there and I could see lights going up the icefall! Very massively cool!! And then watching Ryan's latest update, he said he was going up the icefall that night. I wonder if he was in the group of lights I saw on the icefall. There were lights from almost the bottom to as far up the icefall as I could see from the live webcam's angle. Folks leaving early and late.
Anyway. Just wanted to thank you for providing me with so much Everest info. Much appreciated.

Thanks, Sailor! I'm pleased you are enjoying both the fictional and the real-world Everest. Yeah, I need to advise Ryan to stop his flips! :) I don't think he will! He's 19!!
Seeing the headlamps moving higher in the Icefall or up the Triangular Face from the South Col reminds you of where you are, quite humbling, actually.
