- A Covox Sound Master gains sample abilities for around 2 minutes and tries to make the most of it.
Made this after finding out furnace tracker lets you do samples on the AY8930

very rad conami
Please make more of this kind of music.
Imagine this being the opening for an arcade game in mid 80s. Mindblowing.
it would literally blow everyone's socks off oh my god
early 80s you mean, as FM synthesis already came to arcade games in 1984-85 (not the same as samples I know, but still).
Arcade boards usually presented many CPUs dedicated to specific things including sound
So that sounds realistic
Insert 20 Coins To Start (to help pay for all the ROMs to hold this music). And I probably would.
@@ballandpaddle tbh, storageisn't that much of a concern, just CPU streaming
I didnt know that this chip could produce that complex waves. This could be so useful in early 80s. Impressive
actually this chip didn't exist in the early 80s, its predecessor though, the AY-3-8910, which was around in the early 80s, was also able to do samples. note though that both of these chips use trickery to get samples working, and would probably hog all the CPU time
not to mention memory
Yeah envelopes must be crazy and the memory and cpu times need to be sacrificed for those sample
@@traumatizedgeworthDepending on if the system supported an external IRQ source, the CPU time would be a non issue. Memory would be the biggest concern.
How does it even work anyway
Would it even be possible to do samples at 60hz???
That transition from square to the bass in the rest of the song is smooth
Say less
thats pulse.

yea but it's like SMOOTH smooth

This is what finally got me to understand how to make good loopable music.
ironic considering this song ends
@@traumatizedgeworth It doesn't, for me.
AY8930 was actually used in Covox Sound Master sound card for IBM PC, in ZX Spectrum (later models), however, its predecessor was used: AY-3-8910
thats weird i wonder why furnace labels some AY8930 options as ZX spectrum
ok i changed the title and desc
Damn. This actually sounds pretty good. But now i wonder if it's possible to play this tune on an actual DOS PC with a Covox Sound Master installed. (And ironically, the Sound Master pre-dates the Gravis Ultrasound by only a few years, maybe even less than a year)
@@LondenTowerPossible!
Provided you could program the chip to play PCM, the sound chip is completely programmable so you could even program it to play an entire .wav file (in 5-bit, of course, as long as you have the storage for the wav file).
That bass has no business being this funky!! ❤️❤️
I believe it's a Sunsoft Bass.
@mc_mc_music it's actually not, i just found it in a collection of old sample CDs i found on archive.org
@@traumatizedgeworth Oh okay, that probably explains the white noise in the background.
@@mc_mc_music that's mostly because of the low bit depth
@@ConnorR.mp3 Yes, but low bit depth is often characteristic of old free samples.
I Absolutely love the little fakeout at the beginning and glitchiness later on, but even without it this song is super groovy and I love it! Great job!!
Oh, this reminds me.
There was an old ROM version for the arcade game Red Alert (1981) that diffusely played what sounded like a techno beat over a bunch of noise in loop in an old version of MAME 32. I always wondered why that happened. It wasn't supposed to be there as far as I know.
Feels like battling someone in a fancy abandoned hotel, I love it

Beautiful. Please never stop being awesome
I find myself returning to this more often than I thought initially lol, good stuff.
Every old sound chip has capability of software sample playback if it has volume registers and cpu can access it that fast 😊
You don't even need a sound chip at all! The ZX Spectrum 48K has an internal beeper that is controlled by the CPU directly, and look at what people like Tim Follin have managed to do with it!
@@redpheonix1000 yup, I know beeper and did some test tunes with Beepola tracker 😊
@@redpheonix1000Same principle as SACD. 1-bit samples at high frequency.
Just realized that I could listen to this on loop

I've listened to this for five hours now.
the way its fighting for the samples at the end gives me the chills, fantastic job
I don't know why this is in my recommended, but now i want a full version. Absolute banger my man

This sounds incredible! Amazing job putting this together!
This is awesome! You're very talented!
guys if i knew that the AY-3-8910 had sample compability too i wouldve made this on that and then i could call it a zx spectrum and thats a cooler title but its too late now
For what it's worth the 8910 only has 16 volume levels, whereas the 8930 has 32, meaning it does better quality samples (5-bit vs 4-bit).
@@UnseenMenace but crunchier samples sound cooler
i'm not opposed to another banger like this on the 8910

this is really nice. not sure what the AY8930 belongs to but this sounds kind of amiga. i like it a lot
tbh i was trying to get the zx spectrum chip (AY-3-8910, it's predecessor) but i used the wrong chip after seeing that the AY8930 had sample support in furnace and my brain went "oh guess the other one doesn't"
@@traumatizedgeworth personally mostly into NES and Game Boy Tracking. I oughta try out furnace tracker more, though. this sounds nice!
The AY-3-8930 (AY8930) was used in some later models of Covox Sound Master. The earlier models used the AY-3-8910.

This is sick, I love the sound and hearing this on a CSM chip! Trying to figure it out myself though, would appreciate a tutorial or something because I can't get it to play samples no matter what I do. Great find!
are you using furnace?
@@traumatizedgeworth I am, latest release 0.6pre7 - I saw in another comment you’d said it should just work when selecting a sample but all mine does is just play the default instrument. I’m 100% sure I’m missing something simple but can’t find info in the manual 😅
@@minater247 did you check the "use sample" textbox? did you set the notes to use the instrument with the sample?
@@traumatizedgeworth Ahh there’s another tab in the instrument editor, there it is! I was using the wrong samples tab, the one where you make samples - I knew it’d be something dumb like that. Thank you so much!! 😄

funky *p* *s* *g*
Wow this sounds absolutely fantastic! From the oscillator images, maybe I'm seeing the standard waveshapes being interpolated manually to resemble samples? What's going on here? Also, the tune is a bop!
actually, it's all real samples. it would kinda destroy the CPU for this to run on real hardware, and i don't even quite know how it works. it's just a feature of furnace tracker lol, i think it has something to do with the volume register

yeah that outro goes hard
fuck
The original chip, the (General Instruments, not Microchip) AY-3-8910 can also do this, because it uses OR mixing, which allows for basic PCM modulation. The chip isn't capable of playing PCM, it is simply a hardware bug that allows this by altering the volume level on a channel.
I made another song like this on the 8910 called sample spectrum, it's on my channel
I guess that envelope worked hard for this

You can increase the sound quality by decreasing the DPCM sample length.
there's no DPCM in this song, it's all PCM

Haha Atari ST can do what Amiga can do already as well 😂. Amazing job! Still interesting how many more musicians used the Atari ST just because of the built-in midi ports.
i thought the ST used the YM2149, not the 8930... although i do have another sampled song on the 8910 (near-identical hardware)

The main reason why the AY8930 can use samples is because the chip is fully programmable to play ANY SOUND, so it also has the ability to play full lenght (5-bit) PCM music if you wanted it to provided you programmed the chip to do that.
Sadly, this wasn't used very much back in the days this chip was used in the COVOX Sound Master, which is a shame because this was basically like it's own little (5-bit) MP3 player.
(Also, you still have the module for this? I feel like a pleb for asking...)

Dude, seriously, this “melody” sounds like the opening to some anime where the main character is a nerd, and the hikka, tired of everyday life, plays his computer games over and over again until he dies of a heart attack, and ends up in this game he was playing... I didn't think about the plot further
Somewhere in the middle of this melody, a certain “inevitable” or “aspiring” atmosphere appears, as if the main character at this moment begins to understand that no matter how much he wants to, this virtual world remains monotonous, and the main character wants to leave it, overcoming some difficulties along the way, he finally returns to the real world and emerges from the state of death.
