The people who told you that Mthatha and the Wild Coast were dangerous probably didn't want you to see the poorer side of South Africa. They want you to see Cape Town and the other smaller, more developed coastal towns which are mostly located in the Western Cape. For me, I think that the Wild Coast is the best part of South Africa (along the coast). What you think can happen to you in Mthatha for example can also happen in Cape Town. There's literally no difference.
When you eventually reach Cape Town, please do not forget about Sandy Bay. Sandy Bay was one of the first naturist beaches in South Africa. In fact, the first date I had with my future wife was to go all-over suntanning at Sandy Bay in February 1979. We are still together after almost 44 years.😎
Eastern Cape is probably the safest province in South Africa. You can go to any house and ask for water, they will welcome you with warm hands. I lived in Eastern Cape for close to 20 years, including Mthatha. You will never experience any crime there. People lied to you, it is so disappointing. In the rural areas we do not even lock the doors at night. My family is based in Johannesburg, we have a home in the rural areas of Eastern Cape, we just lock the doors and go for two years, yet no one has ever stole anything in our house. Eastern Cape is very safe. Eastern Cape is very rural and peaceful.
The Wild Coast is a beautiful coastline. Unfortunately most of it is only accessible via poorly maintained dirt roads and quite far from the main road, often only accessible in 4x4s. Places like the Hole-in-the-Wall and Dwesa should really be bigger tourist attractions but their inaccessibility also protects them. BTW, I spent my honeymoon at Chintsa, many years ago
Btw, unlike Transkei, Swaliland and Lesotho got their independence from Britain. Otherwise you have the Transkei history quite right. I travelled to Butterworth and Mazeppa Bay very often and needed a passport for that purpose. Was there a t Mazeppa Bay at the time when Matanzima broke off diplomatic relationships with SA. Personally I didn't experience it as a big deal. Not sure what his grievances were, but I think he received financial support from SA.
Absolutely spectacular views from the roads. The only problem that I could see with the roads is they drive on the wrong side. I've been driving for nearly 60 years, and I'd probably have a bit of a problem adjusting. Well done Lins on your driving skills. Good thing to avoid that snake, it looked like a black mamba. Yeah, it took some time to adjust to driving on the left, but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite okay. About the snake, we showed the footage to some locals and everyone told us that it’s a harmless bush snake. But we know nothing about snakes, so as far as we know, they’re all mambas 😱
I live in Mthatha, a beautiful old colonial town, I travel 3000 km every month , taking stock at 27 liquor stores in the area from Butterworth to Mount Ayliff, Flagstaff, Lusikisiki and spend three days in Port St John's every month while I count the stores in the coastline region. I get five days off, and I have found the perfect place to be is Lubanzi wild backpackers to be close to the ultimate Wild Coast experience. I have never felt afraid anywhere in the Transkei, and in spite of being a 65 year old white male , I get treated with respect everywhere I go.
You did miss most of the real Wild Coast but I enjoyed your video. From Kei Mouth take the old ferry across the Kei river. Road (used to be gravel) then takes you into an area that might as well be on a different planet as it is so wild. Coffee Bay also worth it and even more hippy than Port st Johns. I loved Cintsa for a nice beach holiday that is not too wild. Morgans Bay is lovely but Posh.
You're right mam, our beaches are better than KZN beaches in my opinion. I said that in a video of an American man once and some people got angry, even though I am telling the truth.
Another UA-camr who made a beautiful review about Transkei it's Itchyboots. She even went as far as spending a couple of days at one of villages, which has an accommodation for tourists
It is a real pity you were told so many rubbish stories about the Transkei. They are very friendly people and there are so many little resorts along the wild coast which are all just spectacular to see. Most people who talk the rubbish have never even been to the Transkei/wild coast. I still have many friends who live along the coast and they have zero crime. Some day you need to come back and spend more time there, you can live there for a month and will never be bored as it has everything, from the beautiful coastline, to magnificent river valleys to beautiful waterfalls. Even ones that drop directly into the ocean! Enjoy our country!
It occurred to us as well that the most bad news we got about Transkei came from people who live far away. As we mention in the video, the closer we got, the more positive the stories. We strongly believe in relying on the advice of locals, but in countries the size of SA, not everyone can be considered a local of the whole country
My hometown that I was born in is East London. All my family is still living in East London. Chinsta used to be called Cinsta many many years ago. In the 80's it was the holiday spot for us all. Every single month we use to stay a weekend at Cinsta when it was still a self catering chalet holiday resort. This brings back such good memories. It is sad that it is no longer a holiday resort. It will never be the same. I use to skinny dip in the sea at Cinsta and I was only about 8 years old then. Thank you for sharing this. PS us wild coast people are not dangerous plus Lins you are an awesome driver. Just please keep your hands on the steering wheel but other than that I am very impressed!
This is the second video I have watched of yours and loving seeing my own country through different eyes. The last time I went up to Durban by car, I was a child about 60 years ago so things are very different. I live in Cape Town and know that you will find so much to see in this area and around the vineyard areas. Will be following your journey as an armchair traveller.
FYI they are busy building another road that basically follows closer to the coast line. It’s a double lane highway with several record breaking bridges along the way. This new road will become the new N2 WCR (Wild Coast Road)linking Port Edward with East London. Thus new road is projected to be completed by 2025 - holding thumbs. Keep your eyes on it and time your next trip for when it is open. Thanks for an interesting vlog.
We are not holding thumbs for the road close to the coast as it is cutting through homes of many affecting their livelihoods. Those people will eventully have to go on Social support which does not make the road of any bennefit to us Mpondo people. We are fighting it because we need our land. There are other routes that can be used that will have a lower impact on how we live.
Lovely Video. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Umtata from 1976 till 1984. I know the wild coast very well. You will find people in those parts have very little in life as far as materialistic things go. They also have very little money but they are happy and always smiling. In a way the rural folk have way more than most other South Africans. All over the planet poverty brings crime. The coastal roads are pretty bad and therein lies the genius of keeping the the wild coast wild. You will love Coffee Bay/Hole in the wall, Dwesa, Mazeppa bay, Qolora etc. Fishing is brilliant in those parts. Just keep stuff locked away etc.
Transkei and Wild Coast are one of the most beautiful places we have in South Africa. It's a gem, most of it being natural and untouched. Unfortunately you heard wrong. Yes the roads are not so top notch, and you have to drive in caution because of animals. But people drive all the time there..
Indeed, the beauty of the area is magnificent and if you're a careful (as one should be everywhere in SA, we think), you can have some great experiences there!

Definitely beautiful at the Wild Coast. We once also just hit the road and end up in Port St John's. But the day passed by quickly so we turned back to Margate. The angels must've be with you especially when you walked through the bushes. That's were the most dangerous things awaits in SA. Good luck with the next trip.
I would imagine you spent a lot of time researching this trip with all your comments about safety. Lots of Van Lifers and travelers get their vehicles broken into let alone being robbed. Looks beautiful and thank you for sharing!
We have the advantage that we have quite a large network in South Africa that we can rely on, and that we're not afraid to ask for tips or information. South Africans are super helpful and they are our main source of info. Especially when it comes to safety and what not to do.
what a stunning video. I am from South Africa. I go to Transkei every year as once you get to experience the wild coast something magic draws you back again and again. You mentioned you should have stayed longer in Port st Johns and that's so true. There are the most beautiful places around here and just 15 km back from ports st johns on the same road you drove to mthata there is one of the best places to stay(also voted the best stay award in South Africa) called umgazi river bungalows .hopefully you can return here one day. Cintsa is really cool as I grew up here in a town called gonubie next to cintsa. One day you should return to experience the true wild coast and learn some basics of the Xhosa language and you will have lots of respect when you speak to locals
Drove through Mthatha about 8 years ago, Had no idea it was so dangerous. We stopped at the plaza and got pizza. My very pale, very blond, blue eyed daughter was a big shock to the locals…first time i heard anyone speaking Xhosa as well. Interesting place!
The Xhosas were the first Blacks to encounter Whites. We've known those BLUE EYES for centuries. The wild coast shipwrecks account for a lot of the blue eyed Blacks you find along our coastline. So, don't fib about us!
@@nomagcisacawe3297 indeed that’s true, we received a very good welcome, but the crowd in the mall were certainly shocked to see us walking through. We ‘parted’ the crowds a bit and lots of chat and comments “never seen anyone THAT white before!” Genuinely never felt threatened but on getting the East London the B&B owner was stunned we had gone through there with no issues!

Even in the most remote Transkei village White men had trading stations. Have you ever heard of the law firms Blackway & leppan & also Hughes Chisholm & Airey? Those are lily White and operate from the main street, York Road!
Fact Check: Swaziland and Lesotho were never part of South Africa. Transkei, like the other "Homelands" or "Bantustans", were the cornerstone of the Apartheid system in that people of certain black ethnic groups were regarded as "citizens" of the "homelands" even if they were born in "white" South Africa and had never been to their "homeland". Transkei was one of the two "homelands" for the Xhosas, the other was Ciskei, between East London and Grahamstown

Locals who saw the footage of the snake said that it's some kind of bush snake, completely harmless. This would make sense because it's the most common snake in KZN and likes to hang out near houses. Nevertheless, we don't know a thing about snakes so we're always very careful 😊

Johns ->>> make notes for next time ......_>>>> here we go... from a ex local... 3 things great things to do while there - my favourite things, 1: go to the cave cross over the river and follow the road beautiful drive. Park and walk to the cave... Buy some crayfish and take home and boil or braai with peri peri and garlic.. beautiful supper.. 2.. Go to the airbase, the road is in the town ask the locals, good for a sunset parking with good wine on the far side of the run way ( final scene of Blood diamond here) and look at the same view you have but with birds of prey diving off the cliff. Go to the Delicious monster on the hill for breakfast or sunset.. Second Beach Rd, River Road, Port St Johns, 5120!!! Should have gone to Coffee bay go back... In Cinsa go to Buccaneer's Back packers for a hippy vibe go have a look its beautiful..
Welcome to South Africa. However ..... Where did you obtain your information on the South Coast and Transkei? Some of it is absolutely wrong. I have been living in Port Edward my whole life and when listening to your information I am gobsmacked especially when this should be information for other travellers.
You guys were really brave to drive here after all the warnings, and it's really heartening to read the comments telling how safe it is there. I loved the journey so much, as when I was young in the 70s and 80s, we regularly did this trip from PE to Durban. It's still as green as ever, and Port St Johns is still beautiful!!
We know! As we mention at the end of the video, we should have taken much more time to explore the Wild Coast and we definitely hope to come back one day!
I have been to Wild Coast two times and I think the most friendly people in South Africa live there. There seems to be some contentment there. Everybody is just more relaxed and the scenery is beautiful!

Nice to see my country through your eyes. I did a lot of work all over the Transkei. Lovely part of South Africa. The snake? Not sure could have been a green mamba.
Next time if you ever go to the wild coast again make sure to stay at Crawford Beach Lodge. It is very expensive but very beautiful and worth every cent. Also visit Yellowsands where you can camp it has one of the most beautiful beaches in East London.

It was mostly a time issue because we had to book upfront during the high season. We know that we missed a lot of cool places and it’s a reason to come back one day.
Wild Coast amazing, Port St Johns a truely laid back place, u missed air port on top of the hill, education, pity Port St John's so degraded, infrastructure since the 60/70s was holiday destination of choice, then there umgazi river lodge, amazing, and hole in the wall, stunning, as u go south to ELN Morgan bay, Kei mouth, on the road Umtata to ELN, Mandela's house on left of road, face brick, so much there as long as u observant, an incredibly fertile area for farming if u willing, I grew up in Lusikisiki, the history there all over the place
Sorry bit of useless info. The umgazi bungalow I speak about, wonderful place to stay, just outside, Umtata side of Port St John's, secure on the mouth of the umgazi river (meaning, river if blood,) due to just up river, seen from the road to Umtata is Execution rock, a hill/steep faced mountain and in the old days during tribal etc wars the vanquished were executed over the cliff edge, hence the river ran red with blood. Also the Transkei got its name before apartheid, name is Trans (over) and Kei was the river name, hence over the river, Transkei, I'm. Now from port Elizabeth. Safe travels enjoy your stay
What an unfortunate comment. Some of those roads were never fenced. Rural people are poor but they're not thieves, they use what they have to create a better life for themselves. That's why you will never see informal settlements there like in the big cities like Cape Town.

Have you ever traveled from Pretoria to Sun city , the fences next to the road are cut and stolen , why don't you have this problem where whites stay , the same problem is in Venda , in all black areas the fences are stolen their is always cattle on the roads , all around the old South Africa's roads their was fences, how do you think the white farmers kept their cattle on their farms , since blacks ruled these areas the fences got stolen the same as blacks are doing to railway stations they steal everything of those buildings , look on you tube all the evidence are there to see , so sorry for you , proof me wrong on this with facts, I would like to see how you do it .
Hi, so glad you are still enjoying your trip. I would just like to make one small point about potholes. I live in the Durban area, we have just had an orange weather warning for between 100- 200 mm of rain. We did have heavy rain and some of the potholes are quite bad again. However, the UK at present is under flood warnings for between 20 to 30mm of rain. Considering our very heavy rains I don't think we do too badly. So glad you have come to this beautiful country. ❤️
You're totally right that sometimes we make a much bigger deal about the potholes than we should. For us, the bad part are not the potholes themselves (we drive a fully insured rental car), but mostly the risk of getting a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. The road conditions also differ a lot from region to region and even from road to road. The N2, for example, was surprisingly good.

At Keimouth when you cross the Ferry, you can go to the Tennery Hotel old colonial style. Wonderful place.

Yep, every single person we spoke to told us to be very careful in Mthatha. So we sent through as quickly as we could.

Trankei is one of my favourite places in SA! Coffee bay in particular. Iv always felt safe and had the best adventures there.

Transkei and Wild Coast are one of the most beautiful places we have in South Africa. It's a gem, most of it being natural and untouched. Unfortunately you heard wrong. Yes the roads are not so top notch, and you have to drive in caution because of animals. But people drive all the time there..
Indeed, the beauty of the area is magnificent and if you're a careful (as one should be everywhere in SA, we think), you can have some great experiences there!

Definitely beautiful at the Wild Coast. We once also just hit the road and end up in Port St John's. But the day passed by quickly so we turned back to Margate. The angels must've be with you especially when you walked through the bushes. That's were the most dangerous things awaits in SA. Good luck with the next trip.

I would imagine you spent a lot of time researching this trip with all your comments about safety. Lots of Van Lifers and travelers get their vehicles broken into let alone being robbed. Looks beautiful and thank you for sharing!
We have the advantage that we have quite a large network in South Africa that we can rely on, and that we're not afraid to ask for tips or information. South Africans are super helpful and they are our main source of info. Especially when it comes to safety and what not to do.
Enjoying your trips is SA. Note, Lesotho and Eswatini/Swaziland were never an 'independent' homeland of SA.

what a stunning video. I am from South Africa. I go to Transkei every year as once you get to experience the wild coast something magic draws you back again and again. You mentioned you should have stayed longer in Port st Johns and that's so true. There are the most beautiful places around here and just 15 km back from ports st johns on the same road you drove to mthata there is one of the best places to stay(also voted the best stay award in South Africa) called umgazi river bungalows .hopefully you can return here one day. Cintsa is really cool as I grew up here in a town called gonubie next to cintsa. One day you should return to experience the true wild coast and learn some basics of the Xhosa language and you will have lots of respect when you speak to locals

Drove through Mthatha about 8 years ago, Had no idea it was so dangerous. We stopped at the plaza and got pizza. My very pale, very blond, blue eyed daughter was a big shock to the locals…first time i heard anyone speaking Xhosa as well. Interesting place!
We don't know if it was different in previous years, but everyone told us that Mthatha is not the place to stop.
That's a very funny story. I can tell you now that locals in the former Transkei are used to seeing white people. You were not a shock at all. 😂
The Xhosas were the first Blacks to encounter Whites. We've known those BLUE EYES for centuries. The wild coast shipwrecks account for a lot of the blue eyed Blacks you find along our coastline. So, don't fib about us!

We ‘parted’ the crowds a bit and lots of chat and comments “never seen anyone THAT white before!” Genuinely never felt threatened but on getting the East London the B&B owner was stunned we had gone through there with no issues!

Even in the most remote Transkei village White men had trading stations. Have you ever heard of the law firms Blackway & leppan & also Hughes Chisholm & Airey? Those are lily White and operate from the main street, York Road!
Fact Check: Swaziland and Lesotho were never part of South Africa. Transkei, like the other "Homelands" or "Bantustans", were the cornerstone of the Apartheid system in that people of certain black ethnic groups were regarded as "citizens" of the "homelands" even if they were born in "white" South Africa and had never been to their "homeland". Transkei was one of the two "homelands" for the Xhosas, the other was Ciskei, between East London and Grahamstown

Locals who saw the footage of the snake said that it's some kind of bush snake, completely harmless. This would make sense because it's the most common snake in KZN and likes to hang out near houses. Nevertheless, we don't know a thing about snakes so we're always very careful 😊

3 things great things to do while there - my favourite things, 1: go to the cave cross over the river and follow the road beautiful drive. Park and walk to the cave... Buy some crayfish and take home and boil or braai with peri peri and garlic.. beautiful supper.. 2.. Go to the airbase, the road is in the town ask the locals, good for a sunset parking with good wine on the far side of the run way ( final scene of Blood diamond here) and look at the same view you have but with birds of prey diving off the cliff. Go to the Delicious monster on the hill for breakfast or sunset.. Second Beach Rd, River Road, Port St Johns, 5120!!! Should have gone to Coffee bay go back... In Cinsa go to Buccaneer's Back packers for a hippy vibe go have a look its beautiful..

Welcome to South Africa. However ..... Where did you obtain your information on the South Coast and Transkei? Some of it is absolutely wrong. I have been living in Port Edward my whole life and when listening to your information I am gobsmacked especially when this should be information for other travellers.

I WAS BORN IN UMTATA AND WENT TO SCHOOL THIER. PORT ST JOHN'S WAS MY FAVORITE GO TO THE SEA TOWN.
You guys were really brave to drive here after all the warnings, and it's really heartening to read the comments telling how safe it is there. I loved the journey so much, as when I was young in the 70s and 80s, we regularly did this trip from PE to Durban. It's still as green as ever, and Port St Johns is still beautiful!!
It's just an amazing area and we'll definitely come back one day to visit more places at the wild coast!

I have been to Wild Coast two times and I think the most friendly people in South Africa live there. There seems to be some contentment there. Everybody is just more relaxed and the scenery is beautiful!

Nice to see my country through your eyes. I did a lot of work all over the Transkei. Lovely part of South Africa. The snake? Not sure could have been a green mamba.
Next time if you ever go to the wild coast again make sure to stay at Crawford Beach Lodge. It is very expensive but very beautiful and worth every cent. Also visit Yellowsands where you can camp it has one of the most beautiful beaches in East London.

Did you guys skip Coffee Bay? I know the potholes on that road between Mthatha and the coastline is the worst but definitely worth the trip!
It was mostly a time issue because we had to book upfront during the high season. We know that we missed a lot of cool places and it’s a reason to come back one day.

The reason why you got cattle on the road is because they steal the fences along the road , it's common in black areas .
Wild Coast amazing, Port St Johns a truely laid back place, u missed air port on top of the hill, education, pity Port St John's so degraded, infrastructure since the 60/70s was holiday destination of choice, then there umgazi river lodge, amazing, and hole in the wall, stunning, as u go south to ELN Morgan bay, Kei mouth, on the road Umtata to ELN, Mandela's house on left of road, face brick, so much there as long as u observant, an incredibly fertile area for farming if u willing, I grew up in Lusikisiki, the history there all over the place

Sorry bit of useless info. The umgazi bungalow I speak about, wonderful place to stay, just outside, Umtata side of Port St John's, secure on the mouth of the umgazi river (meaning, river if blood,) due to just up river, seen from the road to Umtata is Execution rock, a hill/steep faced mountain and in the old days during tribal etc wars the vanquished were executed over the cliff edge, hence the river ran red with blood. Also the Transkei got its name before apartheid, name is Trans (over) and Kei was the river name, hence over the river, Transkei, I'm. Now from port Elizabeth. Safe travels enjoy your stay
What an unfortunate comment. Some of those roads were never fenced. Rural people are poor but they're not thieves, they use what they have to create a better life for themselves. That's why you will never see informal settlements there like in the big cities like Cape Town.

Have you ever traveled from Pretoria to Sun city , the fences next to the road are cut and stolen , why don't you have this problem where whites stay , the same problem is in Venda , in all black areas the fences are stolen their is always cattle on the roads , all around the old South Africa's roads their was fences, how do you think the white farmers kept their cattle on their farms , since blacks ruled these areas the fences got stolen the same as blacks are doing to railway stations they steal everything of those buildings , look on you tube all the evidence are there to see , so sorry for you , proof me wrong on this with facts, I would like to see how you do it .
Hi, so glad you are still enjoying your trip. I would just like to make one small point about potholes. I live in the Durban area, we have just had an orange weather warning for between 100- 200 mm of rain. We did have heavy rain and some of the potholes are quite bad again. However, the UK at present is under flood warnings for between 20 to 30mm of rain. Considering our very heavy rains I don't think we do too badly. So glad you have come to this beautiful country. ❤️
You're totally right that sometimes we make a much bigger deal about the potholes than we should. For us, the bad part are not the potholes themselves (we drive a fully insured rental car), but mostly the risk of getting a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. The road conditions also differ a lot from region to region and even from road to road. The N2, for example, was surprisingly good.
