  • Hey everyone, I built this chicken coop back in September. I really enjoyed building the coop and have enjoyed raising chickens so far. I have tried to go step by step in the building process so that you all can see and DIY. Sorry I missed a few steps there at the end, I had gotten in a hurry finish before I had to go work. Hope you all enjoy and if there are any question just leave a comment. Also, for more infomation about chickens visit www.backyardchickens.com

I am getting started a little late. Building my first coop 2022. My chicks will be here in 3 weeks. I am using pallet wood which I am sanding after pulling it off the pallets. Lots of time and energy. My 3 grandkids have already named their future chicks sight unseen. The 2 oldest are helping pull boards and pull out nails. Great fun for all!!! 😄 I am 70. My husband passed away 5 months ago. Keeping busy helps!!

Dude - great project. Really nice work and design. You can catch water off the roof, easily collect eggs, hopefully easily clean out the bedding area. Very cool.

I know that everyone is a critic but I'll tell you something, That's a really nice looking chicken coup or hen house which ever is the correct term. Very nice work indeed. And you'll have something to look at and use for a very long time and the birds will have a very nice and comfortable and 'safe' place to live and sleep at night no matter what the weather is. BRAVO young man.

Man I've got to tell you that this is one "Snazzy" chicken coop. I was online looking for some different ideas to incorporate into building a pigeon loft but upon seeing this video, I was really impressed. You did a super job. I'm moving to Alaska in a couple of months and I'm going to be flying pigeons up there, but after seeing this vid, I'm going to be having some chickens as well. There's NOTHING like fresh eggs right out of your own coop.

Everything you have done (well thought out too) is absolutely perfect, son.
It didn't really break the bank and the end results are a small part next to the self satisfaction...with a smile that'll last a lifetime.

What do these cams do? do they lock the door so the chickens can't open it? i'm building a coop and wondering if i need this too? thanks!

    • @Miko_Jones
      @Miko_Jones 7 років тому +2

They lock the door from the inside so it can't be pushed up by any predators from the outside, other doors just rely on the weight to keep any predators from pushing the door up.

great minds think alike, this is a similar design i came up with for our coop. i looked at several different ideas and this style seemed very functional, solid and easy to build. we just had severe stroms and high winds the last few days that dropped some trees, but my coop has done just fine.
i do see some things on yours that i really like...
having both sides of the roost open is very nice
and roofing panels instead of singles also has advantages for less cost
btw i love the locking mechanism for the roost door... i may add that to my door.

Were curious about the bedding you used in there. What are your (you all's) thoughts about hemp chicken bedding vs. other chicken beddings like pine (wood) shavings, straw, or sawdust? Hemp can control odor and dust more than conventional materials, and last longer.

Yours is the guide for me. Too much cutesy stuff on here and yours is "real person" and not a plan to buy. I was going to build a regular peaked roof but the eureka! of the day was a plain slanted roof - thanks! Like someone commented I noticed the roof not hanging over and I need that because here in Florida it rains like hell. Awful windy too, so I'll have to anchor everything to the concrete somehow. Thank you so much for the inspiration - what a great video.

Do you have a varmint problem at all? I live in a fairly rural area. I used to have free range birds, however, I attracted all kinds of carnivore....not good around my youngn's. So, I 86'xt my birds.
Now, 5 youngn's and 6 years later, we eat eggs by the dozen. I miss my birds. Will using your foundation keep out varmints?...besides running out in the black of night and firing as if WWIII?

You should have let the roof hang over a bit, that way rain won't get to the wood underneath (which is now aligned with the edge of the roof) but would guide the rain away from the wood. Otherwise: NICE! This is exactly what I'm looking for to build myself.
    Cheers.

just to add, if you know someone with an aluminum brake, ask them to bend you a piece you can slide under your roof metal and nail to the ends of your rafters for an inexpensive late game fix. This will keep blown rain off of your rafter ends too.You can get it in 'musket brown' to match your coop.
