Yes, villians are what make the movie interesting. The main protagonist must have a struggle, but a well thought out struggle that will test them in every way possible.
Supremeghost It's not just because Gary Oldman's always a win. DreamWorks actually took their time and paid attention to Shen's story and character. While them purposely making him that evil is debatable, Shen has been regarded before as being the darkest DreamWorks villain to have ever come out. And I can't recall another taking his place.
I personally don't mind visual upgrades either, but photorealism is not a visual upgrade. These old animated films are animated for a reason. Real(or realistic-looking) lions can't give us the expressions that show so naturally in this film, not without looking funky at best or disturbing at worst, not to mention all the other cartoonish stuff like the ways they sometimes use their paws like hands among other things. Live action and animation are different mediums entirely which lend themselves better to particular stories or ideas. Taking something animated and trying to recreate it in live-action is just not a good idea when the animation is already just about flawless. Video game remakes are an entirely different beast. They all belong to the same medium and thus can unfold similarly no matter what. Your example, FFVII, is great because the original quite well shows it's age. A visual improvement is necessary as the old models are quite simple and blocky and the animated cutscenes are quite obviously outdated. Said improvement is also quite worthwhile as modern graphics can much better depict expressions and body language that would give more insight to a character. The actual story can and should be identical, just with the models and animations updated. A movie is not a videogame however, and The Lion King is timeless. As you gushed throughout this video, it's animation is beautiful and they took many steps to make it feel real despite the animation. Yet now we have live-action backdrops and real-looking lions who just can't express themselves as easily or look as distinct or really do anything the couldn't in the original. That aside, I love this movie and I'm glad to see it here. I can't really say anything about the movie itself that others haven't though.
TheDamonWolfCub18 as devils advocate, ill say its supposed to be lacking some facial expressions, in exchange for this insane documentaryesque appearance. It lacked some moments hitting as hard, but it was self aware enough that some jokes were added in, and some funny moments were modified and still funny, like the live bait scene

I ended up seeing it last night. Keep in mind this is my personal take but, the visuals are very stunning in the scenes of how realistic everything looks. That being said its part of the new versions down fall. Other then being almost 100% remake, minus a few liberties taken here and there due to well realistic lions. It really took away from what the original was. Even looking back on the music yes the new movies music is well done and sounds great, but with that said it's just not the same. Slightly different key here, different delivery their and it really made some of the songs no where near as enjoyable as the original. I do understand it's not really possible to do the songs exactly the same and I don't fault them for it. My issue is when listening to it your expecting some inflections that made some of the songs as iconic as they are, but they are not there. With the visual the handicap they gave themselves with doing complete realism really took away from the movie as well. It would have been a much better idea to do a more stylized realism. The biggest issue with the new movie I found was they made it at all. Look back the original and Disney even call themselves out on some of the not so popular choices they made. Completely aware of the shortcoming they have had. When it comes to the remake just making it take away from it, on top of that no small world joke in the movie ether. It almost saying yea we know a lot of you wont like this but we don't care. It almost feel like a money grab. Again this is all my opinion and if you did love the remake I'm happy you did I just really couldn't get behind it. I will say I'm so happy they still kept James Earl Jones for Mufasa.

You touched on the fact that the studio thought this would be a flop. I actually think that worked in its favor because the animators were determined to make the best movie they could because the studio had so little faith in it. Now it’s regarded as a classic - and rightly so.
I think Rollos song from the Hunchback of Notre Dame is better, with it's intensity and all the extra levels it has according catholism that Rollo is supposed to follow.

This video made me realize that Simba thought he triggered the stampede. Before I thought Scar convinced him that his being born was the reason for Mufasa's death.
It can go both ways. Scar did make Simba believe his roar caused the stampede. I think Scar really did mean it when he said "If it weren't for you he'll still be alive" meaning that Scar had no reason to kill Mufasa until Simba was actually born but Simba wouldn't think like that since he loved Scar.
I agree with you, I will sing Be Prepared in the shower like I'm auditioning for Broadway, but I think about the song list as a whole and it's like... How do you call ANY of these bottom-of-the-list? Absolutely all of these songs are brilliant.
Everything Great About The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. It's a severely underrated movie and sadly gets lumped in with the terrible Disney sequels just because it was a sequel
Yes! The sequel gets little to no love, all because it's gets assumed that it's "just another bad sequel" and it being a direct to DVD. Which the reason that it was a direct, was because at the time, Disney didn't want any spotlight taken from their originals, in fear that the sequels would be terrible damaging the reputation of the golden original . But Lion king 2, was one of if not the best sequel Disney possibly ever put out. It not only gives a perfect continuation from TLK, but it holds it's own with more great characters, another story that fits so well, and another handful of potentially iconic songs lost in the pile of "horrible sequels".
I am still getting chills from "The Circle of Life" everytime. One of the few Movies in my childhood that actually made me feel so connected with the characters.
Poxar is a great animation studio, but Up and WALL·E are its strongest masterpieces released back-to-back before Toy Story 2 while after that movie, Cars 2 and Brave are Pixar films released back-to-back that are also the studio's worst films thanks to their out-of-character protagonists. Power to you if you like these films, but IMHO, they are only okay albeit indecisive.
It has been for-freaking-EVER since I saw this movie, and my gosh, there is so much to appreciate! But, the thing that gets most of my wins, *has* to be the animation. I think that a more accurate description of the lesson behind Simba and Nala's love story at 17:30 is the fact that the two of them didn't get married because they were already arranged to but rather because they actually fell in love and wanted too.
I really wished you gave an honesty win for Mufasa telling how scared he was for Simba when he was in the graveyard. It gives the win you gave for Mufasa’s bravery quote more context and how even kings have feelings that they have to listen to.

Sahithya Sudhakar apparently, there was a standard trailer made for the movie that probably would have sold the movie short. Instead, the director pushed Disney to show the first 5 minutes as its trailer, and it work ten times over.
I rewatched The Lion King a couple weeks ago and was devastated when Mufasa went into the stampede with no actual plan to get out of it, his mind focused solely on his baby's well being.
Yep I was waiting for this. For the uninformed, Jeremy irons sang all the way up to "You won't get a sniff without me" when his voice gave out. They were on such a tight time crunch, they brought in Jim Cummings who voices Ed the Hyena, as well as Pooh and Tigger, and he finished the end of the song. The only way you can tell is Jeremy Irons for the most part is doing this sing speaking type of deal, while Jim is actually carrying a tune, but it's amazing that no one can tell without KNOWING it happens.
Emotionless describes this entire movie. Disney just wants money. It's a soulless cash-grab because currently they can't crap out anything original, so, remakes.
@Rengar Guardians of Ga'Hoole had top notch realism in their movie but don't shy away from taking creative liberties and making the owls emote and crafting a world that you can believe to be real. They all look like legit owls but, at the same time, it looks like you're watching an animated LOTR movie... only with owls. Disney is just lazy to come up with something new because they KNOW people are gonna watch and give their money anyway. They could've mixed both worlds together but they're too money-focused to even try. That's what irks me the most about the remake anyways.

Missed Win(s): When Rafiki finds out Simba is alive, you hear in his voice the hope he lost so many years ago be restored in a matter of seconds and the music shows it. Also Rafiki’s voice actor pulling it off almost flawlessly.

Also fun thing, when you trim cats claws all your trimming off is the hook which is what does all the damage, you leave the rest of the claw because if you take the full claw out it messes with the cats sense of balance which is exactly what timone does is just file down the hook

Real(or realistic-looking) lions can't give us the expressions that show so naturally in this film, not without looking funky at best or disturbing at worst, not to mention all the other cartoonish stuff like the ways they sometimes use their paws like hands among other things. Live action and animation are different mediums entirely which lend themselves better to particular stories or ideas. Taking something animated and trying to recreate it in live-action is just not a good idea when the animation is already just about flawless.
Video game remakes are an entirely different beast. They all belong to the same medium and thus can unfold similarly no matter what. Your example, FFVII, is great because the original quite well shows it's age. A visual improvement is necessary as the old models are quite simple and blocky and the animated cutscenes are quite obviously outdated. Said improvement is also quite worthwhile as modern graphics can much better depict expressions and body language that would give more insight to a character. The actual story can and should be identical, just with the models and animations updated.
A movie is not a videogame however, and The Lion King is timeless. As you gushed throughout this video, it's animation is beautiful and they took many steps to make it feel real despite the animation. Yet now we have live-action backdrops and real-looking lions who just can't express themselves as easily or look as distinct or really do anything the couldn't in the original.
That aside, I love this movie and I'm glad to see it here. I can't really say anything about the movie itself that others haven't though.
TheDamonWolfCub18 as devils advocate, ill say its supposed to be lacking some facial expressions, in exchange for this insane documentaryesque appearance. It lacked some moments hitting as hard, but it was self aware enough that some jokes were added in, and some funny moments were modified and still funny, like the live bait scene

I ended up seeing it last night. Keep in mind this is my personal take but, the visuals are very stunning in the scenes of how realistic everything looks. That being said its part of the new versions down fall. Other then being almost 100% remake, minus a few liberties taken here and there due to well realistic lions. It really took away from what the original was. Even looking back on the music yes the new movies music is well done and sounds great, but with that said it's just not the same. Slightly different key here, different delivery their and it really made some of the songs no where near as enjoyable as the original. I do understand it's not really possible to do the songs exactly the same and I don't fault them for it. My issue is when listening to it your expecting some inflections that made some of the songs as iconic as they are, but they are not there. With the visual the handicap they gave themselves with doing complete realism really took away from the movie as well. It would have been a much better idea to do a more stylized realism. The biggest issue with the new movie I found was they made it at all. Look back the original and Disney even call themselves out on some of the not so popular choices they made. Completely aware of the shortcoming they have had. When it comes to the remake just making it take away from it, on top of that no small world joke in the movie ether. It almost saying yea we know a lot of you wont like this but we don't care. It almost feel like a money grab. Again this is all my opinion and if you did love the remake I'm happy you did I just really couldn't get behind it. I will say I'm so happy they still kept James Earl Jones for Mufasa.

You touched on the fact that the studio thought this would be a flop. I actually think that worked in its favor because the animators were determined to make the best movie they could because the studio had so little faith in it. Now it’s regarded as a classic - and rightly so.

This video made me realize that Simba thought he triggered the stampede. Before I thought Scar convinced him that his being born was the reason for Mufasa's death.
It can go both ways. Scar did make Simba believe his roar caused the stampede. I think Scar really did mean it when he said "If it weren't for you he'll still be alive" meaning that Scar had no reason to kill Mufasa until Simba was actually born but Simba wouldn't think like that since he loved Scar.
I'd always thought it was "He died saving you. If you hadn't been here, he wouldn't have died". But yeah, now it makes a lot more sense.

Yes! The sequel gets little to no love, all because it's gets assumed that it's "just another bad sequel" and it being a direct to DVD. Which the reason that it was a direct, was because at the time, Disney didn't want any spotlight taken from their originals, in fear that the sequels would be terrible damaging the reputation of the golden original . But Lion king 2, was one of if not the best sequel Disney possibly ever put out.
It not only gives a perfect continuation from TLK, but it holds it's own with more great characters, another story that fits so well, and another handful of potentially iconic songs lost in the pile of "horrible sequels".

Poxar is a great animation studio, but Up and WALL·E are its strongest masterpieces released back-to-back before Toy Story 2 while after that movie, Cars 2 and Brave are Pixar films released back-to-back that are also the studio's worst films thanks to their out-of-character protagonists. Power to you if you like these films, but IMHO, they are only okay albeit indecisive.
It has been for-freaking-EVER since I saw this movie, and my gosh, there is so much to appreciate! But, the thing that gets most of my wins, *has* to be the animation. I've always appreciated drawn animation, and I want to get into it myself someday. _This_ is the level of animation I aspire to rise up to, it's magnificently beautiful and perfect.

PLEASE Do Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron! It is one of the most underrated animated movies and is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It also has a soundtrack made by Hans Zimmer and is BREATHTAKING.

Sahithya Sudhakar apparently, there was a standard trailer made for the movie that probably would have sold the movie short. Instead, the director pushed Disney to show the first 5 minutes as its trailer, and it work ten times over.
I rewatched The Lion King a couple weeks ago and was devastated when Mufasa went into the stampede with no actual plan to get out of it, his mind focused solely on his baby's well being.
To be fair, that´s what most parents would do, seeing their kid in danger - try to rescue it without regard for their own safety, or even life.
I loved Mufasa as a character because of him being a parent and risking his life to save Simba. I wish he didn't die.

Yep I was waiting for this. For the uninformed, Jeremy irons sang all the way up to "You won't get a sniff without me" when his voice gave out. They were on such a tight time crunch, they brought in Jim Cummings who voices Ed the Hyena, as well as Pooh and Tigger, and he finished the end of the song. The only way you can tell is Jeremy Irons for the most part is doing this sing speaking type of deal, while Jim is actually carrying a tune, but it's amazing that no one can tell without KNOWING it happens.

@Rengar Guardians of Ga'Hoole had top notch realism in their movie but don't shy away from taking creative liberties and making the owls emote and crafting a world that you can believe to be real. They all look like legit owls but, at the same time, it looks like you're watching an animated LOTR movie... only with owls.
Disney is just lazy to come up with something new because they KNOW people are gonna watch and give their money anyway. They could've mixed both worlds together but they're too money-focused to even try. That's what irks me the most about the remake anyways.

Also fun thing, when you trim cats claws all your trimming off is the hook which is what does all the damage, you leave the rest of the claw because if you take the full claw out it messes with the cats sense of balance which is exactly what timone does is just file down the hook
