We had 5 of those awful tracks in my Cavalry Platoon along with 3 M551A1 Sheridans, 1 M113A1 with an Infantry squad and a M106A1 4.2" mortar, in Germany till 1975. Then we went to 6 M551A1s per platoon, I was glad to get rid of them, but when I transferred to the 3rd ACR in the States in 1979, there they were again. Was glad that they were replaced with 5 m113A1s, and 4 M60A1s. The M114 was very under powered, got stuck a lot, caught on fire, I even saw an unmanned one catch fire in the motor pool. Being a Armored Reconnaissance Specialist (Scout) MOS 11DXXR8 meant you were trained on the M114, M113, and the M551A1. Later on when they took Cavalry and Armor out of the 11 series and us into the 19 series MOS, we got to chose if we wanted to be 19Ds (Scouts) or 19G (Sheridan). But if your unit needed you, you could be assigned to a M60A1 AOS RISE or as I was later made a Tank Commander on an M60A3. I saw a lot of worthless vehicles in the US Army like the Gamma Goat and the Gore ,but hands down the worst was the M114, M114A1, M114A1E1.
They look like a solution looking for a problem.
@@ptonpc I saw the Canadians who were smarter than the US Army adopt the recon version of the M113 called the Lynx it should have been in US service, as it used M113 components and was not so under powered and didn't get stuck crossing a ditch.

The m113 c and r stayed in service much longer with the Dutch and Canadian forces

Back in the mid 1950’s on into the 60’s and following his active duty stint my father continued to serve in the Army National Guard. Occasionally he would take me to the ARMORY during a non duty day and let me look around a bit. The full time Motor Pool technicians actually escorted me around and let me look at and admire various military wheeled and track vehicles and equipment while there. In particular the M114’s inside and out per se. It’s still
my contention that the overall experience as a young boy at the time actually influenced me to join the USARMY immediately following graduation from high school. Thanks for the memory. USARMY 74-95 retired.
There were no interchangeable parts with the M113. Well that was a shortcoming. Thanks Jason. Excellent as always.
Well you see both Food Machinery & Chemical Corporation and GM Cadillac needed a contract. Sooo no parts interchangeability, since obviously the two independent contracts and contractors don't talk to each other (unless it was forced by the procurement contract and it wasn't)
I saw an M114 in 1986 at the range at Ft Drum NY. I was the TC in an M48A5 from 1/26 Cav, Mass Army Guard. The 114 was just towed out to the 500 yd area as a target. It was almost facing us. The first round we fired was a HEAT training round. No HE, just kinetic energy. It hit front/front left and took the engine out the rear hatch. We didn't fire a second round.
A Cadillac without tail fins. A unicorn vehicle. Well done on acquisition.

PS, on a side note, I read during the week Spain is getting rid of its remaining M60 tanks, which reminded me Aus Armour doesn’t have an M60 in the collection, is that something that might happen (regardless where it is procured from??).
My Dad was the platoon commander in Dutch recon battalion and had these in the mid 60s alongside AMX13 and Centurions!
Dutch recon battalions had the M113C&R, not the M114.
Very nearly wound up training on these at Ft Knox in the summer of 71, but fortunately the screwed-up orders that assigned me to that training company were corrected (I was 11E, tanker, not 11D scout, from a Guard tank company, the state I was from didn't have ANY of these things) and I was reassigned to a proper tank training company. The irony, of course, as such things usually turn out, was that 13 years later, I ended up in an armored cavalry unit and my primary specialty became being a scout, although I still commanded a tank.
And in the summer of 89, I got to crawl through an old M114 that had been turned into a museum piece instead of being dragged out to the tank gunnery ranges as a hard target like so many of its unlamented brethren.
Thanks. Was a 19D in 1984. Saw some of these parked as non-running show pieces around Fort Knox. Thought they looked cooler than the M113 ... but never heard anything good about them since.

There's one of these displayed at the NJArNG building on Route 33 in Freehold, NJ. They're really tiny and quite adorable as AFVs go.
Stayed broke down in my Infantry battalion in Germany 1973; scount platoon would lead out for alerts with at least 4 in tow on the way to assembly area. Replaced with M113s in 1974. Needed that 20mm Canon on the 113s for a bit more stand off in Scouts; always used in economy of force by Battalion.
Was a driver of a 114 in the 3rd Armored Cavalry in 78 & 79
I have driven the M113, and some of its variants, but always wanted to try the M114, we always looked at it (falsely) as the lil sports car vs the 113. Did have fun in the 113 since it wasn't my primary vehicle, but at the time I did train drivers on it.

The M114 equipped our scout sections in the US Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment in the mid 1970s. Eventually, the 114s were used as range targets, including some that had been recently depot overhauled. We simply stripped out the usable components and over painted the white stars to red. Once thoroughly destroyed, the remaining aluminum hulks were sold as scrap. Our tax dollars at work!

Well we "Acquired one of these range targets" brought it back to Canada and had it running. The museum closed down and I don't know the fate of the vehicle.

I drove one of these in parades while I was stationed at Ft. Knox Kentucky in 1967. I never had any training on the the vehicle , I was just told to get in and drive it, lol. This was after my service in Vietnam, and I just had a few months of stateside duty left to serve in the military. Funny I drove several vehicles during me military service and never had a military license to drive any of them.

We had these at the 3rd ACR 1970 Ft Lewis, WA. We were attached to 7th Army and all our vehicles were parked in Germany, once a year the regiment would fly over for exercises. Went to the 11th ACR(Vietnam) 1970-71 and the M114 was not used at all with the regiment. We had M48A3, M113 and M551 Sheridan.

PS ex- pusser here you're probably aware of the former Australian Destroyer HMAS Vampire, she also served in Vietnam.
her sister ship HMAS Vendetta is on display at the Australian maritime museum Darling harbour Sydney.
The last time I saw one of these, it was downrange and I was dropping 40 mike mike HE rounds onto it! I think that's what happened to most of them.

Nice one, I didn't know we trialled them.
As A reconciliation assault trooper with the 2/14. I always wondered why we didn't have these, especially with the 20mm as if things had turned hot we would have been up against BMP's which outgunned us with our 50/30 combos on the M113. And somewhere behind us, we're the 4 FSV's with the scorpion turret.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know about the M114 at all. My first ride at like 6yo was in a M113 and I spent a lot of time in M577 when I was assigned to HQ. That recoilless gun version of the M114 sounds like a pretty heavy hitter if one could get it where it needed to be given the limitations of the mobility. Great video. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this very interesting video on the M114 that I know really little but thanks to you now I why it was unsuccessful. In truth the M114 with the M113 and the Sheridan with the Alluminium armour, although lighter it was easily penetrated by any gun. Unfortunately all three was vulnerable to landmine...
I'm rather taken with the idea of a tank that could fit my driveway. Would make the shopping run less of a chore.

A neat vehicle, even though Cadillac designers screwed up and set the track back from the hull face. This prevented the track from being able climb over a Foster's Lager can little lone the odd earthen ditch berm. 0~o the killer version of this was the T114 with it 4-shot semi-automatic 105mm recoilless rifle. (sign) If only that turret had made it onto the M-113.
Great vid. As always vehicles that look great on paper, suck in the real world. This is one of those. Cant imagine an armored vehicle with 80/90 Hp. and that vehicle was to be in the recon roll. It needed 200 Hp if not more just for starters.

A salvage yard a little north of my home has 2 of these sitting there... For quite some time now, I have no idea if they are still there... Little reason to go up there...
I have a feeling the owners either don't know what to do with them, or they ask an over the top amount to buy them...

I see that Takom models do a pair of M114's in 1/35 scale. Didn't think the vehicle was that small.
Out at Graf there are 30 of these used as a brick berm. Not kidding, brick shaped, used as bricks.

That's one of the Museum's Sentinel tanks. It's an AC1 Sentinel Hull with an AC3 Turret and a 17pdr gun to act as a mock up of the experimental AC4
I drove one for a while, enjoyed and hated it. Remember pulling 3 others that high centered out of a bog. Didn't mind saying good-bye to it. 113A1 far better.
