  • I decided to find out if one of the dozens of cheap camcorders listed on Amazon is any good. This is my review of the camera, which is a non-branded HD camcorder that advertised 1080p, 30FPS video recording. Let's see how it performs.
    As requested by several viewers, I have set up a Patreon account. Any support is appreciated, but absolutely not required.

    I bought one of these camera's and actually mines works perfectly. When i first got it, the quality was not good but all you have to do if change the resolution and it works as good as a vlogging camera. I think you should buy if you know how to change settings or just watch a video on it.

    Does anyone know how to make it focus when zooming in?? Example: we scratch lottery tickets on UA-cam but the camera shows them fuzzy. We absolutely cannot zoom in clear, it’s always fuzzy and unreadable.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. The focus is permanently fixed and the minimum focus distance is close to 3 feet. Zoom is purely digital, so any softness due to being too close will only get worse when you zoom in.

    most of this chinese cheap cameras is car registrators in camcorder form factor.
    also i really prefer camcorder form factor, but it's very sad that in price 200-250$ most companies stop producing new interesting cameras just stuck with their old models and rebranding them year by year. Panasonic stuck with HC-V510 that was firstly rebranded as HC-V380 and after as HC-V260, but it's same mostly 10 years old camera, with slight differences in software, but not in hardware. It was amazing device in 2013, but now it's looks uncomparable with cheap photocameras or even smartphones in many ways (color depth, low light quality, etc).

    Regarding the colour rendering inside, did you try changing the white balance?

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  3 роки тому

      I probably should have showed other white balance settings, but I left it in auto for the video. I did try other settings. Strangely, the "daylight" settings gave much warmer color in my booth, with the "cloudy" setting probably being the most accurate. Both gave warmer colors than what I showed, but the daylight setting in particular was way too warm making my skin a bright, reddish orange. The cloudy setting was probably the most accurate, but my hands still looked like I had an overdone spray tan, lol. Overall, none of the settings give particularly accurate color in my sound booth.

      Are you having trouble physically mounting the camera to the shoe mount? There should be a knurled ring on the microphone mount that will unscrew to allow the mount on the microphone to slide into the shoe mount. Once in place, the ring can be screwed back down to tighten against the shoe mount to hold the mic in place. If you are having trouble in another way let me know and I'll try to help.

Its definitely having more issues with video quality than my other cheap camcorders, and its the only one I have with the external battery. This one doesn't have any threads around the lense for attaching a wide angle x39 lense like alot of the other low end camcorders have. And, camcorders/video cameras generally are capable of recording video for longer than a maximum of 20-29 minute stints (depending on the brand and age of the camera). My old Kodak (C195... I think) can only record for up to 20 minutes or so before it automatically stops recording, and my much newer Nikon B500 camera can't record video for more than 29 minute stints (regardless of format and any other settings). That gets frustrating sometimes. However, yes, those two cameras are primarily designed to take pictures, not video.

    To the point review. Thanks. Seems strange that if China has been accused of thievery in the electronic industry over the years and practically everything electronic is made in China, one would think they would steal and make better quality products. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  3 роки тому +1

      My guess is simply that making good quality products costs money. I'm sure there are good quality products made in China by Chinese companies, whether based on stolen IP or not. Just look at DJI. Whatever else you think about the company, there's no question that they are making some of the most popular "drones" out there these days.
      But the cheap electronics that random "companies" push on Aliexpress/eBay/Amazon/etc. is just that: Cheap electronics, designed to be as inexpensive to manufacture as possible.

    Very informative review. Your review answered just about every question I would ask about these cheap cams except for how the socalled nightvision that meany of them advertise having. Then again, given the footage of the regular video you demonstrated, my guess is that the IR night mode probabley stinks anyway.
    After watching this, I just went with a used Sony I got off ebay for the same price. The only disadvantage was that I had to buy an adapter to put a micro SD to fit into it like a Sony DUO slot. The added bonus was that great Sony Night Vison they don't make anymore.
    Once again, awesomely informative review!!!👍

      @@opinionation571 I picked up an old 2007 Sony HDR-CX7. She's an old cam but the IR night vision is pretty awesome and is the one thing no phone cam has, making it still worth buying dispite how outdated it is. The built in microphone is pretty nice also. There are definitely better Sony models to choose from but this one suits me fine for recording things in the dark that go bump in the night.

    This camera is "very good" if you need to shot a horror 1980's movie mode - you cannot make this mode even if you change the settings in expensive brand camera - and the "30fps" looks like the "24fps" in old 1980 cinematic camera - the'high quality" in this mode not important if you need to make a 1980's horror movie - because you can hide the details to make it very scary.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  4 роки тому

      That's one possible use case for this camera that could make it worthwhile for someone. However, I can create a look like that with my video editing software (which is nothing special), and many cameras do have low resolution and low bitrate options, as well as picture settings that can be tweaked to get a low quality look like that. So I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary to buy a camera like this to get a look like that.

    • @nenotech7097
      @nenotech7097 4 роки тому

      @@bigtb1717 No you can't, if you use "any video editing" to make the mode look's like old mode or 70's or 80's, you can do it but you loss the "Naturality" of it, it will be after editing looks little "artificial" - please make an experiment in your channel about that - make a small scene with this camera at night and day, and make same scene by a brand camera with video editing and low resolution and bitrate whatever you want, you'll see the differene, this poor camera will be much "better and natural" in mode and feeling and it's lens. try it.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  4 роки тому

      I guess depends on the exact look you're going for. Could be a fun project, I'll give it a shot. My cameras have a 24 FPS option, FYI.

    • @nenotech7097

      @@bigtb1717 But remember if you shot with this poor camera in the video make it at "30fps", because it looks 24fps then convert it when making a movie to 24fps to make it "little smoother" - good luck.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  4 роки тому +1

      I think this camera only offers 30 frames per second. And it only looks jittery like that when filmed at 1080P. It's smooth when recorded at 720P, 30FPS. For this little test scene I'll use 1080P, 30FPS, just like in the review. With my other camera I'll record in 24 FPS, and I'll render the final video in 24 FPS. I'll mount the two cameras together and record with both simultaneously for the whole scene.
      Already got some ideas for the scene. Hopefully I'll get started tonight! Cheers.

      I think it came with the card, but I don't remember for sure. On many of these cameras I have much better luck and reliability using a 32GB or lower card. Some of these cheap camcorders don't work well with 64GB and up cards.

      My advice would be to get something better and sell it if you decide vlogging isn't for you. That way if you end up continuing you didn't waste money on something you won't use after you upgrade, and if you decide vlogging isn't for you, selling the camera will get some money back. Another option would be to get a cheap point-and-shoot camera with decent video capability and do without the audio input. Anything new in the $100-$150 range with an audio input is probably going to be a huge compromise. For instance, the camera in this review and many like it have a really long minimum focus distance, so you won't be in focus unless you hold the camera really far away and the audio input doesn't sound good, even with a quality mic connected. Not saying you couldn't do it. That's just my thoughts.

      I guess it depends on what you consider "better." I agree that phones can take surprisingly great video these days. It just depends on what you want out of a camera. I greatly prefer using a regular camera for photos and video, so there are a lot of cameras I'd personally find "better" than a phone. But I get your point.

      I started with PowerDirector. I thought it was pretty easy to use. I'm sure there are others out there, but that's the one I started with.
      I've tested out several generic cameras like this and some of them have problems with the memory card being read properly in the computer and I've even had some that create odd file formats that won't read properly in some programs. So it's possible you are running into an issue like that, but PowerDirector was pretty good about recognizing just about any file type.

    A review from a guy who admittedly has a lot of cameras, we get it, it's horrible compared to your others. I want to see a review from someone who has not had a lot of cameras. I myself have had a total of one camcorder and I got it about 12-13 years ago and still use it. A Sony DVD-650 HandyCam. It's been a good camera but it is getting a bit long in the tooth and I've noticed stuff like the auto focus is starting to slow down occasionally. I seldom use the zoom feature as if I do, even though I think I'm holding the camera steady the picture starts to resemble an earthquake so zooming is only a good idea when it's on a tripod or if I'm using the eyepiece instead of the side screen. I did recently invest in a ridiculously large battery for the thing that has nearly tripled its recording time. I got one of these chinese camcorders as a Christmas gift and most of what I'd be using it for are well lit indoor shots on a radio repair bench where I fix up old tube type radios from the 20's through the 60's and just want to know if it would be suitable for that kind of video-ing.

      There are many cameras like this all over Amazon, eBay, etc. I've now tested quite a few of them, looking for value gems. The vast majority of them are fixed focus (I've tested a couple with autofocus and it's unreliable). The minimum focus distance tends to be 2.5 to 3.5 feet. They also tend to have a relatively tight field of view, somewhere around a 45mm equivalent or so. Both of these things can make them less than ideal for recording at a desk, which is normally relatively close distances and benefits from a wider angle.
      In terms of audio, some of them are even worse than this one. Some of them can provide usable results, but for the most part, audio is poor.
      Most of them have around an hour of battery life. The chances of finding any larger/extended run-time batteries for any of them is extremely slim.
      Still, it's possible you can get what you need from it. These cameras have a LOT of limitations and a few I've tested had major issues. But most of them technically work, so you may be able to do what you need with it.
