I was considering putting Sweet Charity on my list. I've been eying that Indicator release for a while now. Just found out it's on Criterion Channel, so I might try to squeeze it in!
Seen every film discussed here except for Doctor Dolittle, Easter Parade, and a few of the Marx Brothers titles. "Monte Carlo" I liked the most from the Lubitsch collection and I think "Duck Soup" from the Marx brothers is one of the funniest movies ever made. I'm happy to see you both checking out a lot of the movie musicals that I personally love. All That Jazz, The Music Man, Chicago, and Funny Face are all lovely.
Great choices, some I haven't seen too. One I think you should watch that isn't on your list is that is a new addition to the top of my musical movies is "The Boy Friend" by Ken Russell. 1920's flappers in an almost psychedelic style. It was on the Criterion Channel for some time but is now gone. It is certainly on my re-watch list, catchy tunes and awesome visuals!
No mention of "Grease" in either video! Such a classic. Also, please watch Cabaret before you watch Chicago (I feel like Marshall stole a lot from Fosse). I also recommend "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (edgy rock musical on Criterion!) and A Chorus Line
Tospy Turvy is one of my favorite films of all time. I wouldn't say it's a musical though, it is a biopic of Gilbert and Sullivan while making the Mikado
Okay that makes sense. It's hard to tell sometimes. Most sites like Letterboxd lump music films and musicals together. Maybe I'll wait on that one this month. I do want to watch it soon though
All That Jazz is incredible! It must have been such a feat overall to make. Moulin Rouge is based on The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils, also known as Camille, which is how many adaptations are titled- like the 1936 Greta Garbo film. I think the thing with Baz Luhrmann films is that, especially this one, it's super over the top and in your face. Bombastic! Perhaps people also don't like the particular renditions of the classic songs, especially if they're overly sentimental about them. Cabaret is one of my favorites but the film adaptation is more tame than more recent versions of the (stage) musical. I plan on watching a recorded stage performance of that this month- the 1993 revival with Alan Cumming. One of my friends was talking about it and I'm very intrigued especially as I thought the MC was going to be more of a character, but I guess that's because of the stage production(s). I remember loving Funny Girl but I've only seen it once when I was in high school. I ordered the Waitress proshot, which should arrive tomorrow, and this weekend I'm going to bake a pie and watch it with my mom
okay extra comment because I'm compiling a list of every musical I've seen and I just have to say Ellen Greene in Little Shop of Horrors is amazing! Truly, her voice is something else. How does that voice come out of her? It's so unexpected if you're not familiar with her or have only heard her speak. Gypsy is kind of divisive with people but I feel like Grace might like it, (tho it's another I haven't seen since like high school). Not a traditional musical but La Vie En Rose!- not talked about enough! The King and I has not exactly aged well because of casting and makeup but is a similar plot to The Sound of Music, also based on true events/real people, and I love Deborah Kerr.
With the Lubitsch set, "One Hour With" was co-directed in some capacity with George Cukor. Which seems fascinating. Great bunch of movies talked on y'alls watchlist. I'm a big fan of "Bells Are Ringing" mostly for Judy Holliday. But I think you both might really enjoy "Romance On The High Seas" which is a musical from Micheal Curtiz. Curtiz works well with boats.
Could I make a recommendation of checking out my favorite musical from the 2020s thus far. “Tick Tick Boom”, it is a musical on Netflix directed by Lin Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield about the career struggles of famous play-write Jonathan Larson, who famously passed away days before his Broadway sensation of Rent had premiered. There is unfortunately no physical release (damn you netflix) that exists at this time. Only on streaming.
I highly recommend Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom. While not really a musical (no singing) there is a lot of dancing. I think it's his best movie, and it's really funny.
I know it caught some backlash after it won best picture over some other very revered films, but I love Chicago. Always great to see John C Reilly outside of a screwball comedy (or singing!)
I know what you're saying and I agree. I love OLIVER!, but it is far from a mess. I'm not a fan of musicals in general, but OLIVER! works for me, however, it should not have beaten 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. My feeling is that OLIVER! won, because it was a safe bet and 2001 lost because it was too "out there" and ahead of its time. Even today, people have NO CLUE as to what Kubrick is saying. Clearly, 2001 was the better film for 1968.
I gave you my list of 10 favorite musicals in the comments section of your last musicals video, and that list includes a few films mentioned in this video: "An American in Paris, "Easter Parade" and "Funny Face." (Yes, I'm particularly fond of films set in Paris.) But I also love "Yellow Submarine" and "Chicago," and I think you'll really enjoy both of them. Just know that the dialogue in "Yellow Submarine" does not feature the Beatles' actual voices. I have the Lubitsch box set, and I would start with my favorite from the set, "One Hour with You." "Music Man" has a great score and wonderful performances from Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. "Cabaret" is an excellent film that is much darker than most musicals as it takes place in Germany just as the Nazis are coming to power. It's based on a book, and Liza and Joel Grey (still alive at 92) are fantastic in it. "Doctor Dolittle" was a box office and critical dud that almost ruined 20th Century Fox. However, the song "Talk to the Animals" is delightful and did win the Oscar for Best Song. One final note: Once you watch "Easter Parade," you will be compelled by forces far stronger than you to watch it every Easter. Happy viewing!
The utmost recommendation from me is Mike DeLeons Kakabakaba Ka Ba (Will Your Heart Beat Faster). One of the most insanely hilarious, and entertaining pieces of cinema I have ever seen. The last 20 mins contain my favorite musical number of all time.

Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita with Madonna. There's Yentl by Barbara Streisnd of course Hello Dolly with Streisand. Topsy Turvy isn't actually a musical its the story of Gilbert and Sullivan its does feature excerpts from the Mikado but it can't be classed as an actual musical; it's still a great Mike Leigh film.
