Louie Simmons is widely regarded as the 'Strength Coaches', Strength Coach' and is the founder of the world-renowned gym called Westside Barbell in Columbus, Ohio.
Westside Barbell is an invitation-only training laboratory where only the strongest of mind and body survive. Our goal is simple: “To become the best and push every boundary known to man in doing so.”
This gym has produced more world records in powerlifting than any other in the World, and Louie has been regarded as one of the main reasons that the conjugate style of training has been popularized in today's training methods.
Outside of powerlifting, Louie is a strength consultant for many NFL, NBA, MBA teams, along with having trained gold medal sprinters, pro boxers, UFC fighters, and many more athletes out of his gym via the conjugate method of strength training.

Louis is an encyclopedia of knowledge in strength training, whenever I read his work and whenever he speaks, I try to absorb as much knowledge as I can, mad respect
👊👊👊
Does Louie have any programs which natural lifters can follow?
billy batts natural lifters can definitely train using the conjugate method! There is no set conjugate program that applies to everyone, because in its core, the exercise choices in conjugate method programming are specific to the individual lifter's exact weaknesses and needs, whatever their sport is - while the basic outline of the method is followed: max effort, dynamic effort, repeated effort and GPP. If you are interested in learning about it I highly recommend searching through the article archives on the westside Barbell website, and reading the westside Barbell book of methods, life changing information on there.
@@POMPLP72 why would maths be any different for natural lifters?
“Key is progress. you ain’t making progress, you got problems “ love it!
Rest in peace legend, your legacy will never be forgotten
When Master Simmons speaks. The smart boys listen and the old men too.
@Mark John he said boys and men. Whats that thing blaha even
Hopefully Louie makes more videos here, it’ll forever encase his knowledge for all to learn from
It's coming!
Westside Barbell you should do videos on how to improve squat and deadlift too 💪
Keep an eye out for one soon.
We need more Louie Simmons videos on UA-cam! The godfather of strength training
Jamesy 1971 They’re on their way
Westside Barbell Clocks ticking!!! Let’s get it uploaded!! When Louie talks, I listen !!!
Appreciate the enthusiasm Jamesy!
Mind blowing how much incredible info and training strategy this man has. I worked on just a few of his main ideas/theories in regard to training for 4 months and advanced my deadlift 70lbs. Made me rethink everything I thought I knew about lifting.
Awesome Joshua 💪
Cant get enough of Louie! Hes the Man for sure!
Appreciate the feedback 👊
The Master Speaks
Excellent Information
Appreciate the comment
hell yeah this channel still uploads
I would love to see a video on heavy negatives!!!
Thanks Louie!!!
Covid forced myself to build a small place to lift in my home focusing on the primary lifts; deadlift, squat, and bench. Admittedly, deadlift and squat were intimidating, mostly of form. Years, at a commercial gym, I just lifted randomly and stayed in my comfort zone. Now, in my own home, I am focused more on these lifts and after a few months I am obsessed.
Glad to hear that you were able to adapt to these strange times, while stilling being able to have access to put in work.. 👍
Keep uploading! I want to learn!
AWESOME STUFF GUYS! PLEASE MORE VIDEOS!!! PLEASE
Glad you enjoyed it more to come soon!
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial Videos for beginners would be awesome. thank you very much
More Louie.!!!!.more informational videos they are helpful for me doing strongman and powerlifting. Thank you!
You got it!
Louie was a true genius-met him for the first time back in 1996-my friend Donnie D. and I went down to Westside when I was first learning Louie's system.
My weakest lift has always been bench because of my injuries that have set me back but from watching his videos I’ve educated myself better than my strength and conditioning coaches have and I’ve increased my bench by a good 30 pounds to 25 pounds in just barely 3 months I’ve also incorporated some into my other lifts like squats and deadlifts tell help boost them up tremendously as well
Andrew, we are glad to hear you have had success using our methods. Congratulations on your bench press progress.
There's 3 people I stop what I'm doing and watch their videos when they post them.
1. Louie Simmons
2. Zydrunas Savickas
3. Brian Shaw
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Westside is the Best side.
👊👊
Gee i wish the best for u guys thanks for the content .
💪
So it's possible to do Max Effort on Close Grip Bench then Seated Barbell press on the same day? Then next week Floor Press and the standing press on the same day? Something like this?>
Yes it is.
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial Is this also true for lower body days?
You'll need good shoulders joints for this 😕
The last 60 seconds of this video is so true
Good to see he's doing well!
wait, two maxes? Never heard of that!
I think he’s talking about max on 2 different exercises in the same workout
@@mikedeek yeah 2 diff exercises. reckon he's started to do this more as a lot of the lifters at the gym atm are smaller/female so the volume they're getting from ME is a lot lower than when there was a heap of superheavies at the gym
You heard correct!
@@Dr_Footbrake bro where you got that from? Gotta read into this
@@GabrielMartinsFitness It's just an observation of who's been at the gym over the past couple of decades vs what they're doing. They might be unrelated and it's just been a natural progression of Louie's coaching, but as the lifters there haven gotten lighter the volume seems to have gotten higher eg some of the girls doing 6x6 for dynamic effort, now 2 max effort movements on the same day etc. When I visited in 2015 I also noticed a subtle difference between the bigger guys and the smaller guys + girls (although iirc the guys were prepping for a meet so that could have been why their volume seemed lower).
RIP legend
Thanks!
He’s saying so much smart stuff but I can’t understand what he’s saying
I'm having no issues. It's you.
@@pryme2013 Fool.
put the phone down and LISTEN.
Week 1 16x3x 50%week 2 5x2x 4 seconds pauses off chest.week 3 5x5x week 4 5x1rack Lock out pulls...
I do these with Small Long Red bands usually... Bench pauses with 4 bands 225 bar weight +- 140 lbs tension...
that last part about 2.5 pounds more per session is some thing i herd along time ago from some one else and i still use that thought because like louie said that adds up over time
Another reason to be proud to be from and in 614!
I can listen to Louie's advice everyday
👊👊
Thanks Coach
My bench skyrocketed just by watching this video
Awesome buddy 👊
He has low subs because not many are on this level to appreciate his work.
Most people train to look good not be strong, and if you train to be strong you want to show off with bench dead or squat. Not doing all these variations.
@@78matt Dear, they are in such a high level where they cannot progress otherwise. It is for the advanced of the advanced lifters. Alpha Destiny, Jason Blaha, have stucked with SQ, Bench,DL in ADVANCED level and when they tried his methods they blew up. Check their channels.
dimps biliou i love louie, but i dont think his method is optimal for raw powerlifting. Look at anyone in the IPF, they all use rpe based training
www.westside-barbell.com/blogs/2015-articles/westside-raw
@@alexwilliams5587 Lou’s strategy is superior to RPE. Trial and error helped me figure out how I needed to train.
Please explain the board press. It's an option in the programming I use but no clue what it is or how to do it.
We'll keep it in mind
So you saying that we shouldn't use sleeves when training volume?
I'm only asking because I don't know and I don't act like I understand everything that's being said... especially when I'm still a noob when it comes to the lingo. Lou is beyond a genius and that's all my landlord talks to me about. How good you are and if I want to be the best I need to go to westside and here I am trying to learn from the master. You know the science and if there was a magic pill yous the guy to see. Louie Simmons has the antidote for even the weakest athlete. I'm just keeping it real.
Seldom are wraps or sleeves used. Save the advantage for the meet.
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial I see what you're saying now. Thank you!
Question: on max effort day with 2 exercises as stated by Louie 🙌 will there be a week where you dont do flat bench? Or is bench press ALWAYS 1 of the 2 exercices? Thanks
Can't stand days where close grip incline comes up in my program...but that's probably all the more reason why I should be doing them.
100%
RIP
LOVE THIS CONTENT!
Can you comment on him saying to use 2 different lifts on max effort day to increase the volume? How many lifts total for both, or lifts each. Still want to do 4-5 lifts above 90%, right?
From Germany 👌💪
RIP LEGEND
Hey louie
Been following your program for years but recently stop making progress. Not sure why. I am in garage instead of gym
But lift bench three times week
Heavy, volume , medium
Find your weakness and train it. We have four main training days, 2 upper and 2 lower. Louie trained in his garage for years.
But when i watch westside barbell training videos like in dimitry butakov chanell all members only do one max effort lift in ub day and then go straight to dumbell work
Youssef, Louie is constantly learning and always experimenting. So, we too change our ways. Those videos are a great resource. As long as you remember that we are a training laboratory and always seekign for better ways!
He should make a separate video with reccs for people who do not use PEDs.
It’s the same 🤦🏼♀️ you just wont make as much gains or as fast
incorectulpolitic principles of strength training remain the same lad.
@@Nik2555 are you drunk, high or both?
incorectulpolitic 🤦🏼♀️ if your that dogmatic don’t watch videos on the conjugate method if you think it only works for ped users. When you realise that the principles of strength training remain the same for natties or users you’ll start making some gains, until then you’ll be stuck in your rut making inferior gains, enjoy 😂 bet you’ve read a Stuart Mc Robert hard gainers book 😂😂😂
@@Nik2555 if you think a natty can do the same volume, frequency, intensity as a PED user, you are strongly deluded OR a PED user who forgot how it was as a natty.
Here he says that he rests 6' b/w attempts with DBs- In other videos he said to rest less than that (2-3') in order to get all your workout in under 60-45'- Am i missing something?
I always work with 4by4 6by6 8by8 al the way to 14by14 those 4by4 are 20 kg below my one rep max but i always been doing this i also always do the bench only because i wanna get stronger on the bench not anything else my bodyweight is 225 and my one rep max is 440 and im natural so I must be doing something richt
Is that once a month monster workout with the dumbbells at different angles replacing one of the max effort days or speed days?
You can do that. Our speed days tend to be with the barbell.
Rip to the goat
There are also 700 pound bench pressers who have more succes without this program jullius maddox never changed his grip eric spoto always bench the same style i also use different grips but on my second bench day not on the first day if you are on steroids anything works
So basically do conjugate
Yes (but don't actually)
Westside rules
Fuck yeah! Thanks!
Yees more vid like this
Is it true Louie never kept a training log?
In his head. It works for him.
Max twice on max effort day? Never done that. Anyone try this yet?
where can we get powerlifting programs from the man itself?
We offer online programming through our Conjugate Club website
buy his books👍🏽
Algor Rithm.
Can we do the “monsterous amount of dumbbell pressing” more than once a week? And substitute for speed day? Similar to westside for skinny bastards.
If you can recover from it
Im getting mad Tony Iommi vibes rn😂
Aw nuts. No visual examples
Hey Louie, great content. Any thoughts on Stolen Valor Fake Coach Jason Blaha stealing your programs?
You have to be mentally deficient if you honestly think Blaha is a "fake" coach. He's a big fan of Westside ad Simmons, and brings their ideas to a larger audience. What's wrong with that?
Jason Blaha is a proven life long habitual liar and fraud
Why are you so angry at Blaha? Did he bully you in school or something?
@@PendlayRoe No he only bullies people online . In real life he is absolutely terrified of other people , isnt that obvious to you?. Never forget when Cassidy showed up at his gym and he got so scared he never trained in public again 😂😂😂😂
@@PendlayRoe But I have no doubt in my mind Blaha got bullied Aylot in school
@@PendlayRoe IS Jason metally OK? He seems slow, like lost in life
He continually fails every goal ? Has made no progress in years on youtube
and tries to associate himself with Westside by rebranding - a bit of a fruad
Last kid picked at phys ed for teams lol
Mark Rippetoe told us about him tho
0:30 doesnt work that way for legs lol my shit went up atleast 30lbs from squatting everyday for a month.
I bought those bands by hartzell back in 2001. The group i was with did weightlifting. The bands kinda gave me pariah status back then. All i wanted was to get better but those guys never did anything for me but got me injured. 8 years later the owner of that gym wanted to know where to buy bands as people started asking for them. I told him i threw those away. Fking asshole.
Some are quicker to test and see the value in things...
Louis went hipster way
