Chrissy had MS... so unfortunately when she contracted Breast Cancer she was unable to have orthodox treatment like chemo as it would have fast tracked the MS also. Very sad...lovely lovely lady and a legend in Oz...
Love this bit in an article written for her when she died "...On stage, especially earlier in her career, she would throw shapes calculated not to titillate or to tease but to shock, offend, outrage and frighten. It was potent, sure, but it was also uncomfortable and confusing, because Amphlett didn’t allow herself to be easily assimilated. Her act, exemplified by her wearing a school uniform with torn fishnets - a metaphor for defiled innocence - was a contradiction. Hunching her back, screaming with the primal force of a cornered animal, she presented herself as damaged goods, and was convincing enough to make you wonder if you might in some way be responsible. From all accounts, she was as insecure as any performer. And maybe, as she grew older and presumably more at ease with herself, she also became more comfortable with expressing her sexuality in a more conventional way; both in her lyrics and in the band’s videos. Or perhaps that was a price she was prepared to pay for the band’s success in the age of MTV. Sure, I Touch Myself may the best song about pushing the hot button ever written, but still, I preferred the earlier, more challenging version, back when Amphlett didn’t wear make-up, and her haircut was more severe. Back when she bared her teeth - knowing they were jagged, and that there were gaps in her smile. Ed sheeran’s song where he sings “I don’t need you, you need me” or something like that, was about a former manager who told him that he would never make it, because of his looks. I’m sure he regrets it today 😂
Actually in regard to this "Were the Divinyls getting started now, a manager or record company lackey might have told Amphlett to get that smile fixed" I heard that a record company did that exactly and Chrissy told them to sod off

Another great Aussie pub band... Only 100 to go!..... Back in the day just about every pub would have a live bank on Friday and Saturday night... It would draw a crowd and beer sales would go up. So there was plenty of work for anybody that could hold a tune (or not) or play an instrument. This meant plenty og gigs, plenty of practice. You would start in some shitty little dive and work your way up to better and bigger pubs. That is why the 70s and 80s produced ssoo many great bands... These days ((even before covid) you would struggle to find live music anywhere. So, I'm dead serious when I say you will spend the rest of your life discovering great Australian music🇦🇺. In the same way as bands would move to bigger and better paying pubs the best of the Kiwi Music would find its way over to Sydney, Melbourne etc. Like Jon Stevens.
I think that most Australians growing up during that era remember heading out to the pubs on a Friday or Saturday night to see one of the great bands around at the time. Divinyls and Hunters and Collectors being two of my favorites to see .
This is from an era that was the heyday of live music on the pub circuit in Australia. The pub band scene in Melbourne was massive at the time, to the point that if you couldn't find a pub with a rock band playing on both Friday and Saturday night you must have been house-bound. Saw The Divinyls in Sydney back in.the early 80s and she absolutely rocked and she did a cartwheel on stage and had no knickers on! She was wild and I idolised her. She broke a lot of female stereotypes with her honest raw talent and voice. RiP.
I got the privilege to be able to see the Divinyls live at a pub in the town o was living in. I was 17 they where fantastic live. Chrissy always wearing that school girls uniform. The place went off like a frog in a sock.
Christine Amphlett, power house Oz singer & performer. She wore the school girl unifom, like Angus Young of ACDC wore the schoolboy uniform with backbag. 1959 - 2013 R.I.P.
The most beautiful Chrissy Amphlett, school uniform, fishnet stockings, high heels and one of the best front women ever to be in the business. She is very much missed by those who followed her music.
Chrissy Amphlett is a wonderful singer and has given her heart to Australia. We will never forget that band an Crissy as their singer. A gutsy girl with a heart of gold.
Check out "Pleasure & Pain", "I touch myself", "Only Lonely" & "Science Fiction". All great songs by the Divinyls. Used to love watching Chrissy back in my teen years.
From what I remember her microphone is taped to a flourescent light tube. She’s wearing what was back then the standard public high school winter uniform - I had once of those back in the 1980’s.
As soon as I saw you were checking out The Divinyls I had to hear. The Divinyls have legendary status in Aus. Chrissy is a force of nature, like Debbie Harry. Please hear "Only Lonely" and "Talk like the Rain". 🐾
I loved that you had a moment where you thought one of the band members looked like”the dude from Midnight Oil”. One of those occasions where being wrong just showed off more knowledge.
I'm so glad you picked this one up bro. She was my schoolboy crush (and most of Australia's too) so sad when she passed away. Awesome music. Your love of music is infectious!
Chrissy Amphlett! the Divinyls were great. She is wearing a school uniform. in my mind she was the school girl equivalent to Angus Young's (AC/DC) school boy
There I was in the late 80's at the Raffles in W.A. beer in hand cigarette in the other standing near the stage watching her sing. She reached down and took my smoke and I just stood there as she sang and finished my smoke... in love. :)
I think I would have melted there and then. I have had a crush on her since my late teens, and now in my mid fifties nothing has changed. You win with that story!
Love Chrissie Amphlet! More from The Divinyls please - Pleasure and Pain, Science Fiction, Elsie, I’m Jealous. The clip you watched was from the movie Monkey Grip, starring Nonie Hazelhurst, in the early 80s. The band had been playing in pubs in Melbourne and were asked to do the movie soundtrack and play minor roles (Chrissie played a supporting character in the film). The soundtrack probably did better than the movie itself, and they shot up the charts and stayed there through the 80s and 90s.

Fantastic video brother. I love seeing people react to Chrissy for the first time. You either, get it and are instantly hooked. Or you don't. For those who don't, I feel sorry for you. She was a powerhouse. Her stage persona like no one else. She was also a mighty actress. I saw them live quite a few times. Best concerts I have ever been to. I miss you Chrissy.
Chrissy is actually from my hometown - My dad went to high school with her… There is a laneway in the city center covered in artwork dedicated to her too.
Ur Dad is a lucky lucky bastard. She came out to where I worked looking at getting a Corvette from USA and converted to RHD. That week I was on holidays and missed her visit. The guys rang me and I thought they were bullshitting. Still burns me.
Oh Chrissy 🙏🏼 😔 So glad you reviewed and liked this song so much. There’s so many awesome 80’s Aussie bands. Models, Hoodoo Guru’s, The Angels, just to name a few more, that you could add to your workout play list. ✌️
Time it during your workout, so that when you're walking out the door, the song is ending. No seriously, this song has a pepped up beat with a classic punk sound to it. The howling guitar sound (that's what I am going to call it) is a standout for me... and Chrissy's vocals and presence. Don't underestimate this lady's vocal ability, she could have sang anything under the sun, and you'd be crying for more.
what a stage presence - saw the Divinyls playing at the Warners Bay Hotel all them years ago, and she knocked holes in the wall! Vale, Chrissy...you are missed.
Now you're talking! Chrissy sang on one of the versions of Good Times with Jimmy Barnes and INXS. "Cancer Council, JWT Sydney and friends and family of Chrissy Amphlett have joined forces to launch the ‘I Touch Myself Project’, raising awareness of breast cancer as a tribute to the Australian vocalist who passed away from the disease almost a year ago. Leading female artists including Olivia Newton John, Sarah McLeod and Connie Mitchell amongst others have lent their support to the campaign, which kicks off with a 2.5 minute music video. The video is supported by two 60-second TV ads, radio, digital billboards..."
There were 2 Chrissie's who were brilliant at around the same period, Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders & Chrissy Amphlett from The Divinyls. I loved them both. They were both amazing live apparently as well as on video. Amphlett was a very naughty gal.
So glad someone else thinks this! I can’t seem to think about one without the other. Esp since the Pretenders ended up covering Divinyls’ “Human On the Inside”!
The Divinyls song 'I touch myself' was redone for a campaign for breast cancer after Chrissy Amphlett passed away. Many female Aussie actors/artists featured in it to help raise awareness of the importance of self-checking for BC.
My ultimate rock chick! I cried for days when she passed. Christy also entered theater in the Peter Allen stage show The Boy from Oz as Judy Garland which I was lucky enough to see here in Melbourne
Nick you were puzzled over the guitarist (I believe on the right of screen as you look at it). His name is Mark McEntee and he was in a relationship with Chrissy Amphlett for 11 years. I can see that he does have similar really pronounced facial features to Peter Garret from Midnight Oil or perhaps you’ve seen him in Jesus Christ Superstar- Australian cast or maybe you’ve seen him in the original line up of Air Supply?
There was an attempt to reform the band in 2018 with American Lauren Ruth Ward up front , Chrissy Amphlett died in 2013 , Ward had recorded a cover of I TOUCH MY SELF with John McEntee , the blond guy in the video who wrote the songs with Amphlett they formed the band The new band was supposed to tour Australia in 2019 but was cancelled , I don't know how this would have gone down I heard there was a backlash from us old fans as Chrissy has rock saint hood down here , before she died she gave the song I TOUCH MYSELF to the cancer council Not only did she die of cancer but she had been battling MS as well , so sad , will be forever young forever beautiful
We had so much great music in Australia. Pity it’s gone. Billy Thorpe was my favourite live. He would be smiling while his music would peel your face off. R.I.P. Thorpie.
Chrissie is probably the only person in the world who could sing the line “I might kick her face in” and still sound sound sensual (from the song I’m Jealous)!
Chrissy was a wild child back in the 80's in Australia much loved and missed RIP if you were lucky enough to have seen them live you would never forget it peace out .
I agree, amaaaazing live
I saw them several times live. Brilliant!
Saw them once, They were great. Chrissy had a real presence on stage...............
I certainly haven't forgotten that Saturday night at the Westside Tavern in Laverton in 1981!

I was there in Sydney. Incredible performances.
I love every song the Divinyls ever gave us, but this one will always be my favourite.
Best Aussie female lead singer. So much presence. R.I.P. Chrissie.
Chrissy was a powerhouse! Vale'
Oh Man loving that you love Australian rock. Try Baby Animals you can’t go wrong !
Another great Aussie rock band they have so many great songs 🎵
Chrissy Amphlett was an amazing rock singer as well as professional singer in other ways. Glad you're discovering her. :)
Chrissy Amphlett was incredible in her day unfortunaley she passed of brest cancer in 2013 A huge loss to Aussie music RIP Chrissy
She was the Planet Earth's Rock Goddess. She has no equal.
There were 2 Chrissie's who were brilliant at around the same period, Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders & Chrissy Amphlett from The Divinyls. I loved them both. They were both amazing live apparently as well as on video. Amphlett was a very naughty gal.
Here's another Chrissie, Chrissie Hammond with her sister in Cheetah. Can never have too many Chrissie's. ua-cam.com/video/tBXxcERke-I/v-deo.html
I saw both very close up !
Hynde in Coventry when I lived there. And Amphlett in Sydney when I migrated. Amphlett was a goddess. A naughty one.
So glad someone else thinks this! I can’t seem to think about one without the other. Esp since the Pretenders ended up covering Divinyls’ “Human On the Inside”!
Thanks for loving our Chrissy! Still missed to this day. Great reaction video. 🇦🇺
The Divinyls song 'I touch myself' was redone for a campaign for breast cancer after Chrissy Amphlett passed away. Many female Aussie actors/artists featured in it to help raise awareness of the importance of self-checking for BC.
Love the Bon Scott inspired school uniform Chrissie is wearing
There was an attempt to reform the band in 2018 with American Lauren Ruth Ward up front , Chrissy Amphlett died in 2013 , Ward had recorded a cover of
I TOUCH MY SELF with John McEntee , the blond guy in the video who wrote the songs with Amphlett they formed the band
The new band was supposed to tour Australia in 2019 but was cancelled , I don't know how this would have gone down I heard there was a backlash from us old fans as Chrissy has rock saint hood down here , before she died she gave the song I TOUCH MYSELF to the cancer council
Not only did she die of cancer but she had been battling MS as well , so sad , will be forever young forever beautiful
Great Aussie band
#RIP Chrissy Amphlett, true Aussie music icon.
We had so much great music in Australia. Pity it’s gone. Billy Thorpe was my favourite live. He would be smiling while his music would peel your face off. R.I.P. Thorpie.
RIP Chrissy. I like "Jealous" - it hits hard, from the very first line.
Mark Opitz best Australian Producer ever. Inxs, The Models. Cold Chisel, The Reels, The Angels the Robert John Mutt Lange of Australian music.
Omg! Another Australian band 😀
Chrissie is probably the only person in the world who could sing the line “I might kick her face in” and still sound sound sensual (from the song I’m Jealous)!
Enjoy this ride mate. Chrissy was unapologetically rock.
