"If it sounds good it is good" - Joe Meek.
Eddie Van Halen said this too! Don’t know who said it first but great quote nonetheless
@@neillbaxter9613 Joe meek was a (crazy) british music producer in the sixties....known for."Telstar" by the tornados....He was kind of a pioneer along with Phil Spector.
oh wow! cool seeing ppl mention Joe Meek!

Joe Meek?
His voice...wow, just wow. If his music career ever falters he could make a killing reading audio books. I'd listen to him for hours and hours.
FR IT’S SO CALMING TOO
@@boy-si4sh ua-cam.com/video/YxDWzML0zMI/v-deo.html
Hahahhahahha🎉 you’re SO right
His dad does audio books as well lol
@@Gemanai465 -- I've read that his parents worked in various roles in entertainment while raising their family so I'm not surprised to learn his dad has worked voicing audio books.
"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable."

I love this quote and think about every time I play/record myself playing piano

❤
I needed to read this today. Thank you
Thankyou for this, my favorite music quote from now on
This is damn true. One of my mentors in audio engineering said soemthing great which was "learn enough to throw it all out the window later".
We do not care little bro
@@JohnStockton7459 who's we?
That applies to every other artistic discipline, really!
How does one find a mentor for audio engineering? School ? Intern? Thanks for any information brother
@@JohnStockton7459who’s we little bro
i learned in art college that every art critic is mostly personal taste.
“If it’s sounds trash and you like it - it’s good” - Jason Statham
I would love to be taught by this man. He does not get enough attention for his genius mind.
Couldn't agree more!
False he is always the most privileged and overrated producer ever
He is like one of the producer that gets the most attention wtf r u saying? He went up on a grammy stage when billie won with her album which ik he made it with her but producers usually don’t go up on stage when the artist wins an award unless the producer name is on the song saying feature or something like that
@@ThevelvetundergroundnNicoHe was much more than her producer. He was her co-writer and played EVERY SINGLE INSTRUMENT. He guided the ship into the port. I’ve seen him live twice and he is a VERY talented and accomplished musician in his own right.
@@ThevelvetundergroundnNicohe isn’t only her producer he’s literally his sister, he only went up there because she wanted him to, he isn’t privileged he just has a sister
I wish I knew this when I started 10 years ago. This is the best tip you can ever get in music production.
It really isn't. This is a dangerous tip that must be used with caution. Gordon Ramsey follows his instincts, but has training, Your flat mate who is making tuna custard will not become Gordon Ramsey.

@@vanjaoosthuizen2541 nice.
@@gravyblue it is. Just cuz the meter peaks doesn't mean that's how it has to be. Music is subjective and you do what it takes to make it sound the way you want it
@@gravyblue and he was talking exactly about people like you
peaches etude in the background…ahh so good. i wish instrumentals weren’t so overlooked in pop albums!
Thank you for identifying it!! I really wanted to know what song it was
@@checreates glad i could help share such a beautiful song!!
His voice is so deep lol
Seems normal to me
YEOOOO further proof billie is no soprano.
He is 🥰🥰
There’s an element of confidence required to live in a world of know-it-alls, even well-meaning ones.
Finneas has mastered lyrics and musical sound production and is already a legend. He can now relax and explore his other talents. Billie is very grateful and her brother is devoted to her successful career. This is the power of agape love- Blessings to the O'Connell clan.
Billie is a songwriter, musician, producer, vocal producer, engineer and mixer too (official credits) And as musician for many years he is not even a great producer or musician, there are many better artists he is already overrated with all his Grammys and Oscars etc and the most privileged producer ever bc he is Billie brother so he is everywhere, other producers are always behind not with the artist .. he is not a legend for sure and I personally hope that one day Billie will grow up and also want to work with others too like finneas is already doing because he is repetitive in the production with her and is destroying his sister's artistic growth.
@@Alex-lr2je Snooze like this and you're sure to lose. I wrote that sweet tribute over a year ago.You should mind your manners and not burn bridges with the likes of Irish shamans. Beware the Ides of March and the Feast of St. Patrick's Day is upon us. Finn will have a monumental comeback soon and I'll be front row to see it. Irish eyes smile a sweet country mile for kindred spirits.Be of good cheer and always wish a clansman well, Alexandra D.N. I presume!
I love his voice
Wow this is just solid life advice. Sometimes I get so set on making the best decision for my life that I forget to actually enjoy it
hahaha how do i make my song loud. probably the first thing everyone starting out ask wanting something to sound fuller...this is great advice. make the music you want to hear and be your own biggest fan. criticism doesnt effect you when you create stuff you like.
Except you can't give proper opinions on a track that you mastered. That is impossible because of the human nature. There are different reason that you usually study in school. That's why there are usually more people Mastering songs on big music productions.
There are some tips to make a master better at the start but it will never sound fully correct (use crappy speakers, look at peaks and dbrms, try putting the track in mono, try putting the track on a low pass, try a compressor with a VU meter on the master track, etc) .
I love this guy. Thank you for being an inspiration and motivation, Finneas. Congratulations for your career and work, I wish you the best, to you and Billie. :)
That's how you do your own thing
At least, people who will like your sound will like it genuinely, as they'll enjoy your honesty in making it. Best proof with him and especially Billie
I really needed this today. I go bonkers trying to polish up my songs. I feel like I have higher standards for myself than others. I barely know what I'm doing and should be proud of myself for attempting to make an EP all by myself.
Same here dude, I've litterally spent about 5 whole months just trying to make the perfect electric guitar sound for me and my music project. Its rough making things sound professional, but if there ever comes a point where you enjoy it even if it sounds "wrong", go for it because you may never enjoy it the same way again.
@@ultimadum7785 yea, that's how I felt about one of the songs on my EP I put out this year. It was fun to make and enjoyed the sounds of everything it for sure didn't sound professional but I put it on there and it's not the least favorite so that's good. One thing that I learned about making my EP is people are not going to appreciate the time and effort it took to make a song. The first song on my EP was the quickest song I ever made and the easiest....its in the top 2 ranking :/ make music for you and maybe those who might resinate with it but no one else.
@@thenotsoswifttaylor9496 yeah I guess as a creative you want your audience to enjoy the thing you worked on the hardest or something that is the most avant garde, but people like what they like and if that happens to be the most straight forward thing then that's okay. There must have been something special in THAT song specifically that people loved and it's a very beautiful thing, so we gotta take it as a compliment.
Make the music YOU love.
I do my best making funeral death doom metal I love, but no one listen X(
this has been a problem for me since i started, i stay up making something im proud of but in the morning i regret making it because im scared no one would like it
If you make something that you like, then you never need to worry about no one liking it, because you like it.
Apply this video to any creative field: Take criticism, but take it with a grain of salt because creativity is unique to taste
God he's so freakin cool
I needed that
Same me too ♥️
Tiene una voz como muy engolada, podría ser el que, le pusiera la voz como la voz en off, de los trailers de películas de TERROR.
@@enriqueortin9104 Yeah I could see that if he practiced a little. As an English speaker, it sounds less like that because of the words he uses, but his voice is very deep.
Fin: How do I make my song louder?
Producer: Do you like silent? Then it’s perfect.
Fun: Oh okay
**listens to silence happy**
Good stuff my boi
BENDITO FINNEAS O’CONNELL 👁️❤️
Someone explained art to him
I mean yeah , but you’re saying that like we aren’t brought into a world that says “to be successful do everything by the book line for line” realizing enjoyment is most important is a great lesson for young creators
@@stevensilver2880 not in art tho. sure there’s the “pop” way, but art is expression, and especially with music, there is no “right” way to express yourself
@@illkissyourightnow did you even read what I said or were you replying to the first guy
Well not really when you look at rappers like lil yachty or Kodak Black those fuckers got garbage music. Low IQ Dr Seuss rhyming raps with easy ass beats. And let's not forget the damage is doing to kids
Perfectly said doll
This is exactly like drawing or painting. Yes the fundamentals are important and create a cohesive whole. But tweaking thr anatomy, perepective, composition, shape language, etc. Is what makes the difference between standing out and looking like a carbon copy of your favourite artist.
and that’s exactly the reason why their music is so incredibly good. they don’t play by the rules of the industry, they just do what feels right!
Damn, I respect this man
This was amazing and gave me the most chilling ASMR as a bonus 🤯❤
Great advice!
This is a beautiful take
Him: how do you make music louder
Me: add a crescendo
This is what they teach in university for music: Start with the basics and improve on it until you understand the correct way then learn how to break the rules.
Such wildly good advice
This hits hard. I’m always worried what people will say about our mix because we have prominent lead bass at the same volume as the guitar and we get told that it’s too loud by some people.
So many of our guests say trust your intuition when we ask about advice for musicians
@@TapeNotesPodcast thanks, I’ll try to just do what feels right. 👍🏼
Just discovered Finneas he is amazing!!
Man I wish I could have just called up a master when I was 13
Mastering engineer, not a master
Mastering engineers are running a business and are contactable.
Yes!!! More people like you, thx for sharing
I learned to his brilliant attitude
This is true with any art form. Your taste is what sets you apart from other artists. Being able to determine what you like for yourself is so important.
I feel like that’s when an artists knows where their piece of work is ‘finished’ ❤
That's really powerful. Music is nothing without experimentation
Definition of “subjective”
He is so iconic and so wise.
Holy crap, yeah this is great advice to share!
So True this is so inspiring and helpful!!!
THE TONE OF HIS VOICE IS SO CHARMING!!! (Pssst do yourself a favor and listen with headphones)
Art is subjective

How did he have an audio engineer on speed dial at 13?
Yellow Pages ...or Google these days.
My hero. My fuckin hero, to be specific.
I’ll never forget this but “you can play any note you want if you play it with conviction”
Thanks for the advice, it's works for everything in the life
Unless something is clipping that's not supposed to clip I aint gonna shit on anyones mix
… what’s that got to do with how you choose to master. If your amp can’t handle it that’s not the songs fault
@@KuntBrigade if you got a bad mix your gonna have a bad master too
I don’t listen to much of his and his sister’s music but I can just listen to this guy talk about music forever. He’s definitely a master of his art, super talented, inspiring and whatnot.
Her sister too, the real mind and the magic behind her music
I love this dude!
pure gold. it feels good, although you think its bad
If you're an artist and you like what you hear. It's good. Because it comes naturally to you.
taste is everything. and that tasted well.
This is so valid I'm working on a song rn and there's this random wind chime type sound and can't find where it's coming from but it fits so perfectly

Thank youuuu🎉
This was a perfect bit of wisdom... making music is so personal, you have to love it first❤
I'm going to say this in my mix assignment, no matter how bad the mix I'll say I like it, I wna see how my lecturer reacts to it.
"how do you make your song loud?" man that shit hits me so much lol
Thanks for this video
Thx for this.😢 I feel so much better.

This is advice that is beyond even music, lovely
Great point!
his voice is so soothing
that it hurts
he has such a pretty voice
I think that applies to a lot of things in life. Great advice.
That’s the art of it
Dude does he do any master classes? Cause I would absolutely take one. That has to be the best advice I’ve heard so far for producers
Finneas you are so talented. You deserve more praise!! for a job well done. "THE UNSUNG HEROES ARE THE SPECIAL PEOPLE' KNOW YOU ARE BRILLIANT AT PRODUCING COMPOSING AND SINGING. I RECENTLY HEARD A COUPLE OF SONGS YOU SUNG ALONG AND THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL💛
Love this
I used to be a music snob. Typical angsty teenage, ah that genre is crap type of stuff. My father said, boy (he called me boy all the time)… “Boy, music is just organized sound. Nothing is better or worse, it’s just sound.”
Your dad was really smart. I wish someone had told me this when I was 15.

I love Finneas so much. This applies across so many domains.
I literally figured this out this week while producing my song, there no wrong or right way to do it, as long as it sounds good and you like it, thats all that matters!
