Great and useful review. Once more very objective, practical and relevant. Just an update note Aputure MC Pro has 4x plus light thus similar to Andycine I assume. But at this time in Amazon Aputure MC Pro is sold about 200 while Andycine about 60... Thanks for this excellent review!!!
Great information, you deserve more subscribers. I decided on the Aputure for app. The ability to group and control the lights makes Aputure more versatile.
Todd Dominey You think that I could use it as a key light on the top of my camera and interviewing people in a wedding with tons of lighting in the room ? Will the aputure mc be useful?
I’ve been loving the MCs. Love the wireless charging feature. Takes a bit to work out quickly how to manage them in the app, but overall very satisfied.
Another terrific, very useful review. I also think that one should take into consideration the Company when purchasing a product. Aputure Is a highly respected company, known for innovative products, they have been around for a while, while Andycine is a little less known. That doesn't mean their products are not as good as Aputure, but in the past I have found that products from well-established companies have a much higher level of support and overall quality than newer companies with less recognition. Just something to consider....having said that, I'm going to pick up an Andycine! LOL......
The extra features of the Aputure MC along with the carrying case, defuser, and more versatile mounting with the magnets makes the slightly higher cost worth it. IMO
Thanks for the comparison and review! I like the MC but was surprised to learn just how much raw output you can get for $70 with the Andycine! A small correction: the MC will run just over 2 hours at 100%, according to both Aputure and real-life testing. Also - does the Andycine feature any type of lighting FX at all? If not - perhaps it was worth mentioning in the 1v1 comparison (I personally often find them useful). Another thing worth mentioning, perhaps is - multiple MCs can be linked and controlled at once from the app, as well as put into sequences and interact (like in a chase sequence between multiple lights, for example). There are other functions as well. What the MC lacks in output - it makes up for in smart controls and precision, a point which I think was downplayed a little in this case.
Tell me one thing. Why is it that if you use 2 lights and fire them together you never get a double brightness look. Technically its double the photons firing. But many pros say that doubling 2 lights next to each other will never give you double the light intensity. Why so ? They say to get a brighter light with double the wattage rather than using 2 lights of half that wattage. Ex 2x 60w leds will not be as bright as a single 120w led. Is this true and why so ?
I enjoyed your video, however one thing occurred to me while watching. when you rated the battery life, presumably that was at full power. This would imply the Andycine light would last longer than 140 minutes at an output equal to the MC light. That may be useful for someone to know, particularly on set!
Todd, nice review, but one question: How does a diffuser soften the light when the face of the diffuser isn't significantly larger than the light, itself? I understand about scattering light, which the diffuser certainly does, but unless there are highly reflective walls in very close proximity, no scattered light is bouncing back to the subject to actually soften the light source. In fact, during your explanation, your walls appear black, so would never be bouncing any light back into the scene.
Good question. The diffuser on the Aputure isn't the same as a large softbox. It basically just turns the pocket LED into a glowing orb. The individual LED lights blend together to form a single light source instead of a panel made up of many small LED lights, if that makes sense.
@@dominey Great answer. Btw, I picked up 4 MCs, based on your review and others. I'm mostly using them for Zoom meetings at the moment (sigh), but did do a portrait session the other night, and they worked flawlessly for some edgy fill and put a nice sparkle in the subject's eyes.
i don't really have the need for a RGB light right now, but i'd like to stream on twitch some day and use one ( thinking of Aperture MC) to light up my face cam scene ^^
Old masters along with Rembrandt - developed the technique of Chiaroscuro. Painting with light as you illustrated; prominent key light, and a shadowed fill, etc. Rule of “inverse square law,” pertains to lumens and distance from subject. The Apurture MC is an RGB WW. Both daylight white and tungsten white. Not sure about AndyR-1? Good tips about using the lights! Thanks.
Although the Sidus Link is supposedly available for both iOS and Android, it is important to note that while it does work flawlessly on iOS, it does not on Android in my experience (it works with some phone models, but not others --where the App does not detect the light via Bluetooth). So, while the App is a major decision factor for the Aputure light, it might not work for you depending on your phone model and OS.
I am a wedding filmmaker and still learning about lights. I am looking to buy a small and bright Bi-color light but now those RGB lights make me very confused. I don't know which one is the best option for me. Originally I was thinking to buy Aputure AL-F7. I would really appreciate your suggestions.
Have you ever used these lights for night landscapes to highlight objects. I could see the wireless feature to be handy to remotely control the color and intensity during exposure adjustment
you might take a look to the new light from PFY called "PFY Matrix" which they just released from Germany. The cool thing is they have a smaller version as well.
I actually talked about the PilotFly RGB light in a recent video. It's fantastic. Super bright, great interface, and the diffusion / grid add-ons are super cool.
Great video! How would you characterize the Anycine's light? Would you say its soft enough to just turn on or would you need to soften the light at all? Also, could it be a key light for an interview at full power?
Hi Frederick - just saw this. If you use the Andycine light on a person, I would recommend diffusing it somehow. It's okay without diffusion, but a bit harsher than the Aputure with its diffuser attacked. Otherwise, for backgrounds or practicals, the Andycine is fine w/o a diffuser.
That was another really helpful video. I really might add a rgb light to my setup. I have a question though: I started my video setup (mainly taking head) with a Neewer 660 Bi-Colour combo. I am starting to get the feeling, that I should have started with a softbox... I just got a cheap reflector with the intention of diffusing my rather hard LED light. Do you think this will work?
Not hard add some tough spun to the r1 and colored gel. What people used to do when lighting. Such a shame that we all expect the equipment to do the work for us that's why everybody's working at minimum wage now in the industry
Great information, thanks! But why do youtubers almost always have to have music palying while they're speaking? It's like your trying to make a video while your noisy neighbors won't turn their stereo down. Distracting. Yes I am getting old.
What a refreshing presentation. Very respectful of the audience and with a sense that you are using UA-cam as opposed to UA-cam using you.
One of the only videos that gives good uses vs just reading specs. I can read a manual, what I want is ideas for creative uses. So thanks
Great info. Pretty Underrated channel...
Yea. Guy is good
Sir i think you are the only one who make this video which explains how we can use this product wisely and creativity
Thanks
Very helpful video Todd! Especially the comparison between the two lights.
I loved the presentation and delivery of the information, and the practical know how and tips you had provided.
Amazing video. Lots of good info, concise, and straight to the point. Definitely subscribed! Thank you.

Thank you so much, I didn’t find any video for someone that tried the Aputure mc as a key light. And you gave me that .. thanks
Glad I could help! It works well up close when vlogging, like I demonstrated, though it's a little underpowered otherwise.
Todd Dominey

@@malikaq4906 I would suggest the Apurture MW for that, more money but brighter.
I’ve been loving the MCs. Love the wireless charging feature. Takes a bit to work out quickly how to manage them in the app, but overall very satisfied.
Very informative! Should note that Sidus Link app is capable of controlling multiple lights! Def the x-factor in my opinion.
i was just about to ask this question, thanks for sharing!
Awesome video man! Great info. Keep up the good work!

How can I recreate they light effects that they used in Creepshow with RGB lights.
I like all ur explanation, u just got one more subscriber thanks.
excellent. lucid. very very useful and practical. thanks.

Is one such light enough for main light for live stream on yt? I use a ring but it's too hard/sharp

Todd Dominey no not about this light, it is different and new version with unique wooden design and more/other features.
Ah, interesting! That wood grain is wild looking. Doesn't look like the Matrix is being sold here in the US. Thanks for clarifying.
Todd Dominey it will be sold at B&H
Great tips thank you!
Good video!
My manual has the app in it with a QR code.

Thanks. :) You can find everything I use here: kit.co/todddominey
Awesome review. Need to check out your channel. Thanks 🙏
Great video. What settings were you using for the aputure MC when you were outside in the shade? Definitely made a big difference.
Can't recall exactly, but I think I dialed the color temperature down to around 3500k or so (to resemble tungsten).
