Even though these races are two years old, I’m still amazed at the technology being used on these boats. And the Kiwis just plain snookered the Americans on this start!!
That kiwi team that supposedly arrived with very little baggage, had to take themselves from the emotional depths of despair of loosing such an unassailable lead in the last America's cup that onlookers thought it could only be a supernatural curse to completely rebuilding themselves from well below the depleted line. Thoroughly deserved success.
It sure is exciting, and an impressive achievement. I do like the more traditional classes though. Take for example, even the super maxis in the Sydney to Hobart Race... as a "low and slow" weekend sailor, I can relate to them and what they're doing, at least to some degree. With these flying missiles, I'm just out of my depth ;)
James Spithill just flat-out, got taken to school by Peter Burling, even if Burling didn't have the better boat. Mistake after mistake after mistake by Oracle, that Team NZ just did not make tactically or as a crew. Hats off, New Zealand won that series every which way.
Yes, the only reason oracle was able to pull of that comeback in San Fran, was that mechanism they installed to take the human control out of it. Rubbish really
True. It's a very fine line between angle of attack and speed to get the best possible VMG (velocity made good). Still, it's surprising that with the electronics available, that Spithill didn't perform better. However, the Kiwis, after struggling a bit in the leadup rounds to the cup, had really nailed controlling their boat and getting the best out of it.
He wasnt waving goodbye he was telling the americans to move away as the kiwis had the right of way. This was cleared up long ago. A statement made by media to create drama. To think that Burling would even do that is sad.
@Angelous Bacon actually your wrong. This was discussed on NZ tv. Burlings hand gesture was for Spithill to move as he was to close to the NZ cat, the kiwis had the right of way. Its clearly obvious that was what he was doing. To think otherwise is pathetic. The Kiwis are to professional to do a bitchy thing like that.
Apparently not that kool when you blame your boss for his software i.e. start line over-kills, boundary screw-ups & overall shite geo-special racing ability by Spithell and his Aussie crew!
Suggestion, think you’ll find most of the crew were Australian.. managed & run by a Kiwi boss (Coutts). While the boat design concepts were pretty cool, financing & ownership was out of the US by a company that ironically failed predict its AC future!

I have no clue what's going on here as I've never been up to sailing more that watching boats in harbours but it looks ridiculously amazing. Can anyone explain to me what these guys are doing all the time while the boat is tacking? Americans by hands and Aussies by legs?
People absolutely criticized Oracle for being majority-Australian in 2013, Stephen Colbert even joked about it when Spithill was a guest after the victory.
Yeah. Big mouth Jimmy the Aussie. What goes round comes round Jimmy. Totally outclassed by the Kiwis in every respect including the starts. As Dennis Connor said" I was sailing a cat and you were sailing a dog". Suck it up Jimmy. Haah Haaah

Of course the team that hasn’t been fighting their way to the top won’t be as good as the one who did... it’s a silly custom that makes little sense at this point. Just a system like the Challenger’s Cup has for everyone would be good...
Orion, I believe that lack of 'competition' can be overcome by having two boat teams in the defenders camp to race off against each other and thereby allow a faster progression of small advancements to both tactics and seamanship when handling the vessels they have to race with. At the end of the day, it really boils down to preparation, teamwork at its highest level and making the most of the opportunities on the race course. You see the same principle working on race tracks where teams with two cars will more commonly defeat those teams with one car.
They even changed the rules to allow them to compete in the challenger series so they could size up the competition and get racing time which allowed them to take a 1 point lead into the americas cup. They were still not able to win so Larry Ellison started up his own series, SailGP.

It was the technology and equipment they put into their boat on the layday's that made the difference.
Geez. The Americans can’t buy a win.
Yep great news. They can go home soon.
Glen Robison , too slow bro.
How do they put all that lettering in the water ?
It is a special waterproof paint made to last till the end of the race and then dissipate into the water.

Oracle are making so many errors. Their boat speed is now the same as the Kiwi's, but their tactics have not been anywhere near as good.
Why don't the announcers mention the wind speed? How much breeze are they sailing in here?
