That kiwi team that supposedly arrived with very little baggage, had to take themselves from the emotional depths of despair of loosing such an unassailable lead in the last America's cup that onlookers thought it could only be a supernatural curse to completely rebuilding themselves from well below the depleted line. Thoroughly deserved success.

It sure is exciting, and an impressive achievement. I do like the more traditional classes though. Take for example, even the super maxis in the Sydney to Hobart Race... as a "low and slow" weekend sailor, I can relate to them and what they're doing, at least to some degree. With these flying missiles, I'm just out of my depth ;)

True. It's a very fine line between angle of attack and speed to get the best possible VMG (velocity made good). Still, it's surprising that with the electronics available, that Spithill didn't perform better.
However, the Kiwis, after struggling a bit in the leadup rounds to the cup, had really nailed controlling their boat and getting the best out of it.

Orion, I believe that lack of 'competition' can be overcome by having two boat teams in the defenders camp to race off against each other and thereby allow a faster progression of small advancements to both tactics and seamanship when handling the vessels they have to race with. At the end of the day, it really boils down to preparation, teamwork at its highest level and making the most of the opportunities on the race course. You see the same principle working on race tracks where teams with two cars will more commonly defeat those teams with one car.
